You can get extra speaking practice by doing different things. A CPE student wrote a report about how to get extra speaking practice outside of the classroom. Read what she has to say, and follow her advice! (There is a CPE checklist down the bottom.)
Your teacher has asked you to prepare a report for other students who have
one class a week on practising speaking English outside of this class.
In your report you should review advantages of different ways of practising English
outside of class and make recommendations as to the best ways to do it
Introduction
The actuality of practicing English regularly for students who have group ? or private lessons once a week is beyond any doubt.? The topical interest should be practicing speaking skills, as it gives the opportunity to put? the grammar skills and vocabulary gained during the class in practice as soon as possible. This leads to correct use of English and fluent speaking, which indicates an effective learning. Below are listed some possible ways of achieving this.
- 1. Practicing English while traveling
Using every opportunity to practice your English while doingmaking business or going on tourist trips is a good decision. Not only do conversations in shops or cafes answer this purpose, but also you might try starting a conversationtalk with people you occasionally meet, for example, in transport. Proper conversation starters are needed, and also it is necessary to fit the situation, for example, starting a conversation in an airplane with a person sitting next to you if he or she has an acrophobia is not appropriate.
If you learn meet some new people while traveling and feel mutual sympathy and interest, you may also try staying in contact with them afterwards. There are online services like e-mail, skype, icq and social networks, that make a distant contact possible. Close friendship is hardly to be expected, but there is a possibility to have a regular e-mail exchange or skype talks that could have some mutual advantage for both sides. Missing this opportunity wouldn?t be practical, though keeping a balance between being active and being importunate is exceptionally important.
- 2. Meeting foreigners in your city
Every city or town has its sightseeing points which make it a tourist attraction. Foreigners that come to the city are likely to accept an offer to meet and show them around. One of the ways to use this opportunity is creating an account at Internet services for tourists. One clear example of such a service would be www.couchsurfing.org: a social network for travellers, that makes it possible to find tourists in one?s neighbourhood who are interested in making new contacts with local people. A clear advantage of using such a service is the possibility to get an exhaustive impression of the person you are going to contact in advance by looking through the information in his or her profile: favourite music, books, philosophical views etc. A further benefit of meeting foreign tourists in one?s city is the possibility to make acquaintances or possibly friends from very different countries, which that allows interesting discussions and thereby leads to the cultural exchange. A significant disadvantage, however, would be security reasons: arranging a meeting with foreign people may seem dangerous. Possible precautions are outlined in the service rules: read the profile information carefully, not to ignore the references etc. Those wise measures should normalize the risks.
- 3. Participating in a speaking club
A number of language schools organize English speaking clubs where the members, divided into groups according to the level, discuss some urgent current topics or books, films etc in English. In the case where there is no appropriate speaking club in the neighbourhood, it is possible to organize one on one?s own: apart from interested audience, it requires a proper room and some additional materials like dictionaries, a small dvd-library etc. This can be provided, on condition that the motivation is high.
A speaking club has a number of useful benefits like the possibility to practice speaking English with the students of one?s level, discussing the topics interesting for all members, an attentive attitude to the mistakes as the aim of those who participate in a speaking club is to improve their English skills. A further advantage is the regular basis of such meetings that allow to observe and analyze the results of this studying activity.
Recommendations
Corresponding to the fact, that every single student has his or her preferences and peculiarities, the chosen method should satisfy their personal requirements. For those who, for example, find it difficult to make new contacts, organizing a speaking club with friends or group mates would be preferable, whereas active travelers would probably prefer to make as much contacts as possible during their trips.
In conclusion, in should be noted that every activity that gives a chance to practice one?s English speaking skills is beneficial for those who study English and none of them should be ignored.
