BEWARE!! Halloween Treats are Tricky?

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

This post went out in last week?s newsletter?that you should ALL be subscribed to. ?I mean, it?s delivered directly to your inbox ? talk about convenience! In case you did, for some reason miss it; here?s your chance to catch up! ?ENJOY!

Another year, another October 31st ? that?s right, it?s almost Halloween again.? The candy?s been on sale since mid-July (gotta love early marketing).? So far you?ve been able to stay away from it (hopefully), but in a few days the little ghosts, goblins, Justin Bieber?s and Honey Boo Boo?s will soon be knocking at your door requesting treats. Now, we all know that candy isn?t a health food by any stretch of the imagination.? Consider this for a minute ? people are outraged that some farmers are feeding their cattle the sweet stuff and yet we hand it out and feed it to our kids (and ourselves) without thinking twice.? Um, is it just me or is there something terribly wrong with that??? Okay, but back to the point (I need to work on this focusing thing?), we all know that your house is going to get TP?ed or egged if you hand out pennies or pencils again this year, and that?s just so not cool.? There are lots of non-candy trick-or-treat options ? bouncy balls, raisins, stickers, temporary tattoos, etc., but for most people that just doesn?t register as an option ? so off to Costco to buy the Economy Pack of M&M?s, Snickers, Kit Kat?s, and Milky Way?s all the while knowing things are going to end badly?? (Think ? ELASTIC WAISTBAND).

A new trend that seems to be quite popular is the concept of ?healthy candy? (yeah, that one?s running for oxymoron of the year and is right up there with ?political strategy??).? I?m here to tell you right now ? ?healthy candy? is on the same lines as the ?paleo cookie?.? Yes, things in the package may appear healthier than they really are?? You?ve got the 100% Fruit Snacks (FYI: fruit does not disguise itself as an ?Angry Bird? or a Disney Princess.), sugar free, organic, low fat (yeah, I know), unjunked, fortified, and natural.? Folks, these ain?t your standard Skittles here ? these bad boys have 100% of everything you need AND don?t need?? Regardless of if you hand out a ?souped up? version of Sweet Tarts or the standard Jolly Rancher, the overall story plays out the same, a treat is a treat.

Another ?tricky? tactic that can lead to trouble in a big way is the ?snack? size or ?fun? size phenomenon.? It usually plays out like this ? The bowl is full of candy and you?re ready for the little trick-or-treaters.? While waiting for the doorbell to ring, you tell yourself, ?I?ll just have one of these little Reese?s.?? That?s not a bad thought, one small treat is totally acceptable, unfortunately since the treats are ?fun? size it seems easier to justify two (or six) instead of stopping at just one.? This happens with the kids too.? Think about it.? If you buy a regular sized Snickers bar you?re looking at 270 calories, 14 grams of fat (and we?re not talking the good kind here), 35 grams of carbohydrate and 29 grams of sugar (that?s roughly 7 tsps).? Now let?s say you have the ?fun? size and justify eating 4 or 5 of them (let?s be real here folks, they?re small and we all know that over the course of the evening it?s going to happen?), now you?re facing 320-400 calories, 16-20 grams of funky fat, 42-53 grams of carbs, and 35-42 grams of sugar (that?s between 9-11 tsps).? The damage adds up fairly quickly and if you get the ?assorted bag? or help the kids sample their loot you may not have 5 of the same thing, but mindlessly munching 5 (or more) treats in total, is no stretch of the imagination.

This year, don?t be tricked by the treats. ?Here are some ideas to help keep this Halloween from becoming a ?sugar induced nightmare?.

Having Trick-or-Treaters stop at your house?

  • Give out ?healthy? or non-food treats to avoid the temptation of having a bowl of treats in the house.? Pencils, stickers, crayons, temporary tattoos, bouncy balls, etc., all make great options!
  • Choose to give out candy that you don?t really like ? if you?re a chocolate lover give non-chocolate treats.? This will help you avoid the lure of the candy bowl.
  • Alternately, choose to ?not be home? or don?t answer the door and avoid the scene all together.

Um, yeah, but I?ve got kids??

If Halloween is going to happen regardless of your wishes there are still ways to minimize the damage.

  • Arrange a ?Healthy Halloween? party for your little goblins.? Bob for apples, paint or carve pumpkins, do face painting, and offer scary, but good for you treats.
    • Cauliflower brains.
    • Hard boiled eggs, grapes, or olives ? eyeballs.
    • Carrot fingers.
    • Raisin bugs.
    • Chocolate covered bacon snakes.
    • Spaghetti squash guts.
    • Use your imagination to create a ?tasting lab?.
    • Get together with friends and neighbors ? agree to give out non-candy treats.? Map out Trick-or-Treat stops to these places and avoid a sack full of sugar.
    • If you do end up with a bunch of creepy candy encourage your child to ?sell it? back to you or an area dentist office for money or prizes more lucrative than licorice and lollipops!

Seriously, no candy on Halloween???

I know it just doesn?t seem fair.? If your kids (or you) insist that it?s not Halloween without candy, go ahead and indulge in a piece or two.? Choose wisely and really enjoy only your very favorites.? Don?t buy bags and have it in the house for the entire month. When the holiday is over, clean it out!? This Halloween doesn?t have to result in a ?candy coma?? just be tricky with your treats!

Happy Halloween!!

Get Target Internet Site Traffic For Your Internet Business ...

If there is not any traffic to your internet site, then it suggests that you don't have anybody having a look at what you have on offer. It is vital that you can drive quality traffic to your internet site. Your sales squeeze page, you closing talents and product all become unimportant if you haven't got any traffic coming to your site. This in turn suggests that nobody will obtain what you've got to sell. If you are selling a health product, then you can make a funny picture about it and put your internet site's name on it. Next, just forward it to as many contacts as practicable using emails to force traffic to your internet site.

You do not have to be a pro in making videos and no dear software is required. Just do a straightforward search at Google.com and you'll find one. There's a lot of free desktop software available out there to make videos. And if you are smart, and do an hour of ?Googling? you can employ either of the above options for slightly less than about a hundred dollars for sure. ( and have most likely many thousands of visitors to any offer you would like, including your own, with easy ease ) Tip two : Create Your Very Own Affiliate Marketing Program Yes, you must have a service or product to supply, and yes?unfortunately, the majority will NEVER get this far.

Because I have a killer forehand and nearly unhittable serve. However the truth, is you can make a short report, ?give it away? for seven $, and have an incorporated affiliate marketing program that helps your fans become your promoting partners ( affiliates ) in the time it requires me to beat my nextdoor neighbour Rick in straight sets each afternoon on our beach community tennis court. Because many of us like self-assessment, this may be a dynamic way to draw in visitors to your internet site. As an example, if you concentrate on leadership development, you can create an internet tool that helps visitors identify their leadership style. If you're an office communication expert, you can develop an inventory that permits respondents to explain their communication and work style preferences. Like assessments ( i.e, an assessment is a real example of a tool ), a tool is anything that may help your fans carry out a desired operation or function, or boost performance in a specific area. US knew dead Zeta leader's ID before body stolen

MEXICO CITY (AP) ? The U.S. government knew that a suspect fatally shot by Mexican marines was the head of the widely feared Zetas drug cartel well before the marines left the body unguarded in a small-town funeral home, where it was stolen in a pre-dawn raid by armed men, U.S. officials told The Associated Press.

The U.S. had independently verified the identity of Zeta founder and leader Heriberto Lazcano, killed in a shootout Sunday in a northern Mexican town, before his body was stolen at about 1 a.m. Monday, according to a U.S. law enforcement official who was not authorized to speak to the press about the case.

The information throws into question the Mexican navy's insistence that marines thought they had killed a common criminal and that was why they left his body unguarded at the funeral home where gunmen hijacked a hearse in the middle of night. Rear Admiral Jose Luis Vergara, the navy's chief spokesman, said last week that the identity wasn't confirmed through Mexico's fingerprint database until after the body was gone.

The theft of the body was an embarrassing twist on one of President Felipe Calderon's biggest drug-war victories, the killing of perhaps the top capo to fall so far in Calderon's focused attack on cartel leadership. Twenty-five of the 37 most-wanted drug traffickers from a list issued in 2009 have now been caught or killed.

"We had it confirmed before he was stolen," the U.S. official told the AP.

U.S. authorities didn't provide details on how they knew, only that they had confirmed evidence. They didn't say whether they believed the Mexican navy also knew Lazcano's identity soon after it carried out the operation that killed Lazcano and his driver. Mexican navy officials and the attorney-general's office declined to comment on Saturday.

Mexican forces often work from intelligence provided by U.S. law enforcement, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, on the location and movements of top drug lords. Both Mexican and U.S. officials said the navy came upon Lazcano by accident before Sunday's attack.

Lazcano, who was born in 1974, according to the U.S., or 1975, according to Mexican officials, was one of the most-wanted drug traffickers in Mexico and the U.S. and hunted for years by both governments. He was a former member of the army special forces who went on to lead a band of assassins he originally called "The Company" for the Gulf Cartel, which dominated drug trafficking through Mexico's northeastern border with Texas for years. They later became known as the Zetas, named for the radio code given to high officers. The two groups split in 2010, leading to an unprecedented escalation in drug violence in Mexico's northeastern corridor.

Lazcano was personally responsible for hundreds of murders, according to the Mexican government, and led an organization responsible for some of the country's most shocking atrocities and mass killings. Those include the deaths of 52 casino gamblers and workers in an extortion fire last year in the northern city of Monterrey and the slaughter of 72 migrants in the border state of Tamaulipas in 2010.

There was a $5 million reward for him in the U.S. and $2.5 million in Mexico.

The Mexican navy didn't announce publicly until last Monday night, more than 24 hours after the shootout, that it believed it had killed Lazcano.

They admitted the body had been stolen only after it leaked out in the local press on Tuesday.

Calderon's administration said by Tuesday that there was no doubt about the identity of the slain man. The U.S. government waited until Thursday afternoon to release a statement congratulating Mexico on the slaying.

A second U.S. law enforcement official, who was monitoring internal communications after Sunday's shootout, also said the U.S. knew earlier that marines had killed Lazcano.

According to Mexican accounts, Lazcano was killed in a confrontation outside a baseball field about 1 p.m. Sunday in the town of Progreso, about 120 miles south of the Texas border. The navy said the marines were acting on a complaint from a local citizen about armed men in a truck and were coming up behind the vehicle when they took fire and grenades. The marines returned fire, killing the driver in the truck. Two others got out and ran. One got away, while the man later identified as Lazcano was felled by six bullets, two to the head, according to the autopsy.

Marines approached the bodies of Lazcano and his accomplice to confirm they were dead, then guarded the scene and called the Coahuila state attorney general's office, which had jurisdiction over an investigation into the killing, according to a Mexican military official who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information.

The official said marines called the state prosecutor's office twice, and waited for hours ? an unusual amount of time ? for investigators to arrive.

Vergara said in interviews this week that state officials didn't arrive until 7 p.m.

He said marines then accompanied the bodies to a funeral home in nearby Sabinas, though it's unclear what time. The marines left before midnight.

A Coahuila state forensics expert was called to the funeral home in Sabinas to process the body around 11 p.m. Sunday according to a state police official who was not authorized to speak to the press. The expert finished taking fingerprints and photographs about 12:15 a.m. Monday, and sent the information to the federal attorney general's office, the police official said.

A short-time later, gunmen forced the funeral home owner to take the body by hearse to an unknown location. The owner could not be reached for comment this week.

Stealing bodies of fallen accomplices has been described as part of the Zeta culture, in which soldiers don't leave their comrades behind.

Lazcano was believed to be a devout Catholic who wanted a proper burial. An elaborate mausoleum in his hometown in central Hidalgo state stands near a chapel that bears a bronze-colored plaque reading: "Donated by Heriberto Lazcano Lazcano, Lord, hear my prayer." The plaque also says the chapel was built in honor of Pope John Paul II.

The mausoleum has a 15-foot (5-meter) high chrome metal cross, stained-glass windows of figures such as red roses, the Virgin of Guadalupe and the sun's rays and clouds. A rectangular hole, possibly for a coffin, is near the windows, beneath a crucifix.

As of late last week, Mexican media images showed no change at the empty tomb and no acknowledgement that Lazcano had died ? not even a single bouquet of flowers.

Bironas' FG gives Titans 26-23 win over Steelers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? The Tennessee Titans gave themselves a little breathing room with a much-needed victory, and the Pittsburgh Steelers still can't win away from Heinz Field.

Rob Bironas kicked his fourth field goal, a 40-yarder as time expired, and the Titans beat the Steelers 26-23 on Thursday night to snap a two-game skid.

Matt Hasselbeck threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Britt with 4:19 left to tie it at 23, and the Titans (2-4) snapped a three-game losing streak against the Steelers. More importantly, the team that had given up more points than any other team in the NFL held its first opponent below 30 points this season.

"It's only one win, we know that," Titans coach Mike Munchak said. "But it's a great win for us at this point in the season when we needed a win to show people what we're all about."

Pittsburgh (2-3) lost its third straight road game this season and the fifth in six games dating to last season despite Ben Roethlisberger throwing for 363 yards and becoming the Steelers' career passing leader.

"We're not doing enough things to finish games in hostile environments," Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said. "That's just the reality right now. Hopefully, it's just right now. We didn't do the job tonight. We defeated ourselves in some areas. We'll go back to work. Needless to say it's disappointing. We tip our caps to those guys."

Roethlisberger drove the Steelers into position to take the lead after the Titans tied it. Shaun Suisham, who already had connected from 29, 28 and 52 yards, had his 54-yard attempt fall short of the crossbar with 49 seconds left. Tomlin said Suisham hit the 52-yarder pretty good so he decided to give his kicker the chance to win a second straight game.

"I take full responsibility for the miss," Tomlin said.

Chris Johnson ran for 91 yards on 19 carries, and Hasselbeck finished with 290 yards passing.

"It feels good to win against a good opponent," said Hasselbeck, who started his second straight game in place of injured Jake Locker. "It feels good to win a close game."

The Steelers were up 20-16 when Lawrence Timmons picked off Hasselbeck's pass, but they had to settle for Suisham's third field goal after moving the ball only 14 yards. That field goal put Pittsburgh up 23-16, and the NFL's fifth-ranked defense couldn't make that stand up.

Johnson, who has been criticized mercilessly for his struggles running the ball, kicked off Tennessee's next drive with a 12-yard run. The Titans drove 80 yards before Hasselbeck found Britt to tie it. Britt had dropped a would-be TD the play before and bobbled the TD catch too.

After the Titans stopped Pittsburgh, Hasselbeck drove them 33 yards with the big play a 25-yard pass to tight end Jared Cook on a night his mother, Yulinda, was honored as a breast cancer survivor. The Titans gave the ball to Johnson to run down the clock, then sent out Bironas for the field goal.

Tomlin tried to ice Bironas with a timeout. Bironas waited it out, and then kicked the ball through to give the Titans a rare chance to celebrate this season.

"It's kind of like Kevin Costner in "For The Love of the Game," where he clears the mechanism," Bironas said. "You go out there, and you're in the zone."

Roethlisberger entered the game with 27,703 yards, 286 yards shy of Terry Bradshaw's franchise record. Roethlisberger was 24 of 40 and passed Bradshaw with a 17-yard pass to Heath Miller late in the third quarter of his 119th game. Bradshaw played 168 games from 1970-83. Roethlisberger also threw an 82-yard TD pass to Mike Wallace.

"We're not scoring enough points, and we're not making the play when we need to," Roethlisberger said.

The Steelers, who played without safety Troy Polamalu and linebacker LaMarr Woodley, head home with a much longer injury report.

Steelers running back Ike Redman caught four passes for 105 yards for the Steelers before injuring his right ankle in the third quarter and never returned. Running back Rashard Mendenhall also went down with an Achilles injury.

Center Maurkice Pouncey injured his right leg on the Steelers' first play from scrimmage and was ruled out for the rest of the game. Right tackle Marcus Gilbert hurt his right ankle in the second quarter. Doug Legursky stepped in for Pouncey, while rookie Mike Adams replaced Gilbert. A Steelers drive stalled when Derrick Morgan got around Adams and sacked Roethlisberger.

Bironas also had field goals of 22 and 38 yards in the first quarter, and his 47-yarder on the final play of the first half gave Tennessee a 16-10 lead.

Tennessee capitalized on a blocked punt to take the lead early in the second quarter.

On the final play of the first quarter, Tim Shaw broke through the middle of the line and blocked Drew Butler's punt. Jason McCourty recovered at the 1 to give the Titans first-and-goal. That set up a 1-yard burst from Jamie Harper that gave the Titans a 13-10 advantage.

Harper's touchdown left St. Louis as the only team without a rushing touchdown this year.

"We couldn't lose tonight," Shaw said. "We were desperate. We needed this win more than anything. It's gotten us in a good place."

The Steelers failed at moving above .500 for the first time this season after splitting their first four games. They should have felt right at home in Nashville, as roughly half the fans at LP Field were waving Terrible Towels while dressed in Steeler black-and-gold. They even had a fan run onto the field after the third quarter, waving a towel before being tackled.

Notes: Titans cornerback Jason McCourty had an interception, the fifth of his career and first this season. ... Tomlin is 3-2 against the Titans. Tomlin now is 15-6 in October. ... Tennessee has won two of its last three home games against Pittsburgh. ... Titans cornerback Tommie Campbell hurt his ankle on punt coverage and did not return.

    Turtle passes waste through mouth

Chinese soft-shelled turtles pass waste through their mouths, scientists in Singapore have found.

Biologists were puzzled by the turtle's behaviour because, despite using its lungs to breathe air, it often submerges its head in water.

By testing the water, they found that the reptile was excreting urea through its mouth instead of its kidneys.

The discovery adds to previous research, which suggested the turtles have highly specialised mouth tissues.

Professor Ip Yeung Kwon and colleagues from the National University of Singapore published their study in the Journal of Experimental Biology.

The species, Pelodiscus sinensis, is found in swampy, brackish water and is native to much of East Asia.

Their unusual mouths were first discussed over a century ago when researchers suggested that the velvety tissues inside function in a similar way to gills in fish.

Biologists theorised that the mouth tissue may play a role in oxygen and salt filtering but according to Prof Ip the processes were not "clearly defined".

On the whole, the turtles respire in the same way as most other members of the chelonian family.

Whether basking in the sun to warm their blood or "snorkelling" at the surface of the water with their snouts in the air, the turtles breathe by pulling air into their lungs.

But observations of the species noted that they occasionally submerge their heads into pools of water for up to 100 minutes.

Prof Ip and colleagues brought a turtle into the lab to study how the turtles did not drown and to observe what else may be happening.

Researchers provided the turtle with water and observed as it regularly dipped its head and rinsed water through its mouth.

The urea excretion rate through the mouth was significantly greater, 15- to 49-fold, than that through the cloaca?

End Quote Professor Ip Yeung Kwon The National University of Singapore

The turtle's rhythmic motion of its throat, not to mention its survival, signalled that it was indeed breathing during these submerged spells.

Scientists also analysed how the chemistry of the water changed after the turtle interacted with it and found increased levels of the chemical compound urea.

The majority of vertebrates expel urea, a waste product full of nitrogen, through urine via the kidneys.

In turtles urea passes out of the cloaca - the single orifice used for waste matter and reproduction.

"Throughout [the study] period, the urea excretion rate through the mouth was significantly greater, 15- to 49-fold, than that through the cloaca," said Prof Ip.

"These results indicate for the first time that [mouth tissue] processes and rhythmic [throat] movements were involved in urea excretion in P. sinensis."

Prof Ip told BBC Nature that the ability to pass waste through the mouth was unique to this species.

But he suggested that the ability could be evolutionarily linked to how some mammals such as bats, cattle and goats "recycle" nitrogen by excreting urea through their saliva.

"We were greatly surprised by our novel results because it is generally accepted that the kidney is responsible for the excretion of urea in vertebrates - except fish," he said.

"Contrary to this common notion, they suggest that the mouth can be a major route of urea excretion in soft-shelled turtles."

Chinese soft-shelled turtles are a delicacy in many parts of Asia and are farmed extensively. A recent survey of 684 farms in China suggested they sold 91 million turtles every year.

However, wild populations are listed as "Vulnerable" by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature due to the pressures associated with this farming.

Fake air bags may not inflate, safety watchdog says

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

If you?re in a serious collision your car?s airbag could save your life.? Or maybe not.

The Obama Administration has issued a public warning?that millions of vehicles that have undergone repairs after a serious crash could pose severe safety risks due to the use of counterfeit replacement airbags.

The government estimates that ?tens of thousands of counterfeit? air bags? are now unknowingly in use in American automobiles.

?We want consumers to be immediately aware of this problem and to review our safety information to see if their vehicle could be in need of inspection,? said a statement by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood issued ahead of today?s formal announcement.

Counterfeit components have been a plague on the auto industry for decades and the list of affected parts is a large one, covering just about everything one might find in an automobile, from sheet metal to lug nuts.? But some fake parts can prove particularly dangerous ? such as airbags that either won?t deploy or might improperly inflate during a crash.

?Air bags in particular play a central role in keeping drivers and passengers safe in the event of a crash,? said Administrator David Strickland of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Each of a vehicle?s airbags is designed to operate in a specific way and may inflate to varying degrees depending on the severity of a crash.? The fakes that the government is warning about likely will not function properly if they work at all.

Recent tests of 11 fakes found that the majority either failed to work or inflated improperly and some actually threw shrapnel as they inflated.

Related story: Toyota has biggest car recall since 1996

NHTSA ?says that it believes the vast majority of replacement parts are genuine and that ?this issue affects less than 0.1 percent of the U.S. vehicle fleet.?

The challenge will be to find the affected vehicles. The government?s automotive safety agency has released a list of 100 models most at risk, a mix of Detroit, Japanese and European models including such mainstays as the Ford Focus, Toyota Camry and Volkswagen Jetta.

The counterfeit airbag issue reportedly only involves vehicles that have been repaired within the last three years, and does not involve either original factory equipment nor repairs made by certified new car dealership repair shops.

Those who have had their vehicles repaired by independent service shops may be at risk. And the government is warning that consumers who might have tried to purchase replacement airbags through the Internet may be at particular risk.

Vendors have been known to offer counterfeit bags for as little as $50 while factory originals may cost as much as $1,000.

The government has been investigating the problem for a number of years and intercepted a shipment of 68 counterfeit bags heading to an address in Chattanooga, Tenn., in September 2008. They were identified as replacements for Audi, BMW, Lexus and Toyota vehicles.

Last February, Chinese businessman Dai Zhensong pleaded guilty in federal court and was sentenced to 37 months in jail in connection with that scam. He was one of three owners of Guangzhou Global Auto Parts International Group, based in Guangzhou, China, which the government claimed in a court filing ?specializes in the production of counterfeit air bags.?

Another 1,163 fakes were intercepted during an August raid in North Carolina conducted by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

Automakers, trade groups and insurance organizations have been increasingly vigilant in trying to stamp out the problem of fake auto parts.? Actions by General Motors alone resulted in the seizure of $250 million in counterfeits since 1985.? Meanwhile, the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association estimates as much as $45 billion in business could be lost to counterfeits worldwide.

In some instances, the problem may just result in cosmetic issues ? a fender that doesn?t quite meet factory spec shape, for example.? But fake oil filters can cause engine failures.? And the government is warning counterfeit airbags could lead to injuries or death.

The government will warn owners of vehicles on the list who have had airbags replaced after a crash to go to a certified dealer to have the devices checked.? Such inspections, the government says, could cost as much as $100 as they would not be considered part of a vehicle?s warranty.

NHTSA warns that the initial list of vehicles could ?evolve over time,? as it learns more about the problem. And the number of fakes in use on U.S. roads could prove higher than initially reported.

For Sale by Owner House Buying Tips | Article Directory | Submit ...

Nowadays there are all sorts of options when it comes to buying a home; you can buy anything from a single family home to a condominium to a row house to a link home, and much more. As well, buyers are given the opportunity to purchase homes sold by agents and homes sold by the homeowners themselves (FSBO). If you?re buying a homeowner, there are certain things to keep in mind. Since this type of home buying does not involve the use of a real estate agent, you have to do some research on the price of properties in the area. But this isn?t as hard as you may think.

    Use the Internet
Once you begin looking at Ottawa or Toronto homes that are FSBO, you can use the internet to do some research. For one thing, you can visit REALTOR.CA? to look at the listing price of similar properties in the area. Likewise, you can visit a variety of FSBO sites to compare the price of similar properties.

Best of all, you may find an agent who sells MLS? data so you can more directly estimate the proper price of properties.

    Get Pre-approved
Before you approach a FSBO listing, you should get pre-approved for a mortgage. Pre-approval gives the seller confidence that you can afford to buy their home.

Looking a property For sale by owner in ottawa, Get in touch with homemarketing, They offer cost-effective flat-free REALTOR services and their site is open to everyone including agent.

iFixit: New iPod Touch Is Way Harder To Repair Than iPhone 5

Screen Shot 2012-10-11 at 10.04.36 AMA brand new iPod touch has ascended from the depths of Apple HQ, and as sure as the sun rises in the East and sets in the West, iFixit has torn the thing apart with heat guns and spudgers. If you kindly recall Apple's iPhone/iPod/iTunes announcement last month, you know that the fifth-gen iPod touch has quite the spec bump, but unfortunately is more difficult to repair than the fourth generation model. In fact, it's more difficult to repair than the iPhone 5, by a lot.

    Stress-Testing Software For Deep Space

My understanding is that the thinking goes like this.

Sure, there are newer processors that claim to fit the bill. But space hasn't changed so much since the Apollo days that we need all new processors; by and large anything that needs "heavy lifting" CPU wise can be transmitted back to Earth. For unmanned probes, there's very little demand for high speed CPU tasks that can't be offloaded to Earth. And even if there was, when your latency back to your operator is about 14 minutes (with an extra 14 to receive further instructions, plus the time it takes to interpret the previous data set, determine new instructions, then program those instructions), that's a lot of down time to work on various tasks.

The Mars rover CPUs, I imagine, spend the vast majority of their time idling.

However... the old stuff works. It has its faults and flaws, sure, but they're extremely well known and documented. You can work around them. You have the old grognards that have been kicking around since Apollo who know every damn thing about them. They're risky, sure, but it's a managed, controlled, limited and understood risk. But new processors are *new*. You lose that element of certainty, and the CPU is the heart of a probe. You lose it, you're fucked.

You're trusting the mission, a mission that costs billions of bucks, to a new, untested device that hasn't been field tested, hasn't got that certainty, and *you just don't need*.

RANTS FROM MOMMYLAND: Inappropriate Baby Shower Gifts

Last weekend I made a voyage down to NYC for my friend Samantha?s baby shower. It was so fun!? It was like being at a college reunion, but with free booze and food! Actually, the only other major differences were that Samantha was stone sober and we played different games at the shower than we did in college. (I?m surprisingly good at flip cup AND baby gift bingo, FYI.)

Samantha had just close friends are family attend her shower, but she still got a really good haul! She scored a super nice stroller, a pack n play, a nursing pillow, swaddling blankets, a baby bouncy chair thing, a stack of board books, and tons of super cute clothes for her baby boy. (I got him one of those onesies that has a necktie printed on it. I think they?re hilarious?like the baby is about to go off to an important business meeting! It. Kills. Me.)

Anyway, last night on the phone I was telling her that I think she pretty much got everything she needs. Really, throw in a breast pump and she?s good to go. But then we hung up I started thinking about what those first few weeks and months with a newborn are like and I realized there?s some other stuff she still needs. But it?s not the kind of stuff you can give at a shower because it would be really inappropriate and slightly obnoxious. I mean, do you really want to be that guest who had too much sangria and is belligerently yelling from the back of the room, ?YOU?LL THANK ME LATER FOR THOSE FROZEN MAXI PADS!?

My list of post-partum items that she still needs includes:

Frozen maxi pads. I wasn?t kidding about this. Pour a little witch hazel on them, throw them in the freezer when your contractions start and when you get home a few days later from the hospital, WOW, do they feel good. Just warn Grandpa that they?re in there before he goes looking for ice cubes for his celebratory whiskey.

Hemorrhoid cream. I?m not going to go into a lot of detail about why she needs this one. But you have to agree with me that 1) she will need this and 2) if I had wrapped it up in cutesy wrapping paper and given it to her at her shower I would have gotten pelted in the head with a peepee teepee by another guest for being an a-hole. And I would have deserved it?because that?s not something any pregnant woman needs to think about. Shh shh. No no. Let?s pretend I never mentioned it.

Nursing Tank Top. I know, you?re thinking of the traditional tank top that unclasps at the top to reveal a boob. Those are super convenient and practical once you get the hang of nursing. But my boobs were so insanely sore that first week that I didn?t want any fabric touching them at all. In fact, I just wanted to walk around topless for like 10 days straight. Super hot, I know. That?s why I think Samantha should just skip the nursing bras and tanks and wear a shirt like Rachel McAdams in the movie Mean Girls. You know what I?m talking about? Just cut out the whole area around the nip so that your torso is warm but your boobs can breathe free! Again, not as hot as it sounds.

    ??

D Batteries. For the swing and the bouncy chair, because that was the only place my baby slept for about 6 months and if the batteries wore out, I would've been willing to do anything (YES. Anything) to get those batteries changed as fast as possible so the kid WOULD JUST SLEEP.

Pajamas that look like clothes/Clothes that feel like pajamas. Meet your new wardrobe for the next 8 weeks 6 months.

Three new laundry hampers. Trust me, you'll need them. After two months you'll be like - what are those things in that thing over there? Aaahhh yes. They are called drawers and they open and shut inside of a dresser. How quaint. We just use the hampers now and no one judges us. Or they get cut.

All in all, don?t you think the above gear is just as important as the diaper bag I got her?! Watch out, Sam. There is a very scary package on its way to you from Boston. Now where are my fabric scissors...
