Personal Branding: The Seven Deadly Sins | Business 2 Community

Since the dawn of the new millennium, Personal Branding has been going from strength to strength and is currently being touted as one of the ?make or break? factors for career success. Need recent proof to substantiate this claim? How about the inclusion of this blog on the Forbes ?Top 75 Websites for your Career? only last week?

And yet personal branding is not without its (serious) pitfalls. I venture to claim that only a committed and informed minority of those who decide to take it seriously and put it to the test in their careers and their lives end up fully benefiting from it. And this is more often than not the result of them committing one of the seven ?deadly sins? listed below which must be avoided at all costs.

1.?Dishonesty. Building a ?fake? brand that doesn?t accurately reflect on your values, your style and your character is the first (and possibly worst) of personal branding deadly sins. Contrary to popular opinion, a personal brand is not an artificial creation but ideally a truthful reflection of the constellation of elements that define who you are and what you want to achieve. Any compromises you make on the honesty front are a sure recipe for disaster.

2.?De-motivation. In order to achieve any worthy goal, a personal brand must galvanize all of your talents and skills, generate enthusiasm and become a self-motivating success story. Problems will sooner or later arise and challenges will inevitably cross your path: unless you are energized by a brand with which you are passionately identified, you will lack the commitment to make it happen and your drive will ultimately flounder.

3.?Inconsistency. Ideally your brand must drive one clear and consistent message home to your target audience. Mixed messages confuse people and make them wonder whether you have worked out in your mind what your goals are and how to achieve them. If consistency communicates strength and character, inconsistency irradiates weakness.

4.?Isolationism. Even if personal branding may initially appear an intensely individual and even intimate process, the fact is that our personal brands do not exist and/or operate in a vacuum and need the support and endorsement of others in order to succeed. Networking is vital and coming out of your shell and building bridges towards others a must.

5.?Self-aggrandizement. If you turn personal branding into a big ego trip, others will be turned off and desert you quicker than you may think. Keeping your ego in check, and adhering to an honest appraisal of your strengths and weaknesses animated by a fair and balanced yet self-critical spirit is one of the bases of lasting personal branding success.

6.?Statism. Just like the person behind it, a brand is a living thing; and like every living thing, it must change and evolve and cannot afford to become static for too long before events overrun it and it ceases to attract the right people and opportunities. Be fluid my friend?

7.?Over-ambition. Ambition comes in healthy and unhealthy doses. Those intent on achieving goals well above their current station in life who haven?t gotten the knowledge, skills or experience to realistically make it happen should concentrate on acquiring those first before postulating themselves as the next success story. Modern psychology insists that talent is largely a myth and that there was never a virtuoso without thousands of hours of committed practice and a sensible and gradual program to that effect. Wanna become the next Tiger Woods? Work on your swing first and seek to win a local competition before you join the PGA tour in your quest for your first major title.

With honesty, motivation, consistency, friendliness, humility, liveliness and healthy ambition as your personal branding trademarks, I am convinced that your climb to personal branding heaven will be not only smoother and more fun but significantly quicker as you avoid many unnecessary detours. See you at the top!

Kenya troops fight on beaches in assault on Somali rebel city

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Kenyan troops launched a pre-dawn attack on the Somali port city of Kismayu on Friday in an assault to drive the al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab militant group from its last major stronghold.

Fighting and shelling was taking place on the city's beaches after a land and amphibious assault, city residents and rebels said.

The loss of the southern port would deal a huge blow to al Shabaab as it is a lucrative source of revenue and a centre for operations over areas it has controlled in south-central Somalia since 2007.

The group, which formally merged with al Qaeda in February, has been steadily losing its footholds under sustained pressure from African peacekeeping forces (AMISOM) and Somali government troops for the past year.

While Kismayu's recapture would go a long way towards stabilizing Somalia, which has lacked effective central government for the past 20 years, it may embolden the militants to resort to more guerrilla-style attacks.

Kenyan military spokesman Col. Cyrus Oguna said Kenyan soldiers and Somali government troops had advanced on Kismayu from the north, south and from the sea and was now in control of parts of the city.

"We're moving towards the main city. Our surveillance aircraft are monitoring every event taking place on the ground," Oguna told Reuters.

Oguna said there had been little resistance while Al Shabaab said it was still in Kismayu, the country's second biggest city.

Residents reported fighting near the beach earlier on Friday, about 4 km (2.5 miles) outside the city, as military helicopters hovered overhead.

"We saw seven ships early in the morning and now their firing looks like lightning and thunder. Al Shabaab have gone towards the beach. The ships poured many AU troops on the beach," Ismail Suglow told Reuters.

Locals said businesses were closed and many streets were deserted. Some masked men looked on from windows and balconies.

"We can hear deafening shells and the town looks dead. We don't know where to go, the jets are now flying over," said Rukia Jelle, who was watching the scene outside her home with her five children.

KISMAYU "NOT A PIECE OF CAKE"

The Kenyan military spokesman predicted an easy takeover.

"For now, we're not everywhere. We've taken a large part of it without resistance, I don't see anything major happening," he said.

Al Shabaab, which was driven out of the capital Mogadishu last August and is fighting African Union forces in other parts of the country, said it would not give up Kismayu easily.

"Going into Kismayu is not a piece of cake. We are still fighting them on the beach where they landed," Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab's spokesman for military operations, told Reuters on Friday.

"For us, this is just the beginning, our troops are spread everywhere."

Abdirashid Hashi, an analyst with the International Crisis Group said the loss of Kisamyu would be a "huge psychological blow" and a "significant loss" for the militants.

"The die-hard members will continue with their destabilization strategy of targeted killings, suicide bombings and IEDs (roadside bombs)," Hashi told Reuters.

"The low-level footsoldiers will just see them as a losing proposition," he said.

Hashi also said the loss of funding from local taxes would hurt them less as the group morphed into a more fluid guerrilla force. The rebels would have less need for finances to run urban areas and pay salaries, and would focus more on acquiring immediate supplies.

Al Shabaab's radio station, Radio Andalus, was still airing live in Kismayu, urging residents to take their guns and join the 'jihad', Suglow said.

A woman named Halima said some residents who support the militants had joined them with guns at the frontline.

Hashi said the fighters, who have been in Kismayu for the last five years, would have prepared for an assault they knew was coming after African troops seized Mogadishu, Afmadow, Baidoa, Beledweyne, and Marka.

"The area around Kismayu is all forest and jungle and they knew this would come. I am sure they have some contingency plans and have sent supplies outside the city," he said.

Kenya sent its troops into Somalia last October after the rebels were blamed for a series of raids on Kenyan soil targeting its security forces as well as Western tourists.

On Thursday, residents said planes had dropped leaflets on Kismayu warning civilians to evacuate within 24 hours.

The United Nations refugee agency said there had been a spike in residents fleeing the city on Thursday but no reports of large numbers fleeing on Friday, adding that there had been fighting close to both the main roads leading out of the city.

It said more than 13,000 people had fled Kismayu since the beginning of September after Kenyan forces began targeting al Shabaab's positions in the city.

Facebook Gifts swaps virtual trinkets for real life goods

Facebook Gifts swaps virtual trinkets for real life goods

Remember the Facebook Gift Shop, that place where you could pick up virtual Troll dolls and send them to your friends? Well, it died. But, a phoenix has arisen from its ashes -- Facebook Gifts -- which will allow you to send real Troll dolls to your friends. You'll be able to order gifts for people directly through the social network and suggestions to pick up a little something will be tied into birthday reminders and life events like weddings. The new initiative is the result of its decision to purchase Karma, a social "gifting" app, in May. Over a 100 retailers have signed up for the launch, including Starbucks, and Facebook obviously will be taking a small cut of each sale, which could be a huge source of monetization for the company, especially on the mobile front. Interestingly, friends can be notified before a gift is delivered and will be given a chance to tweak orders -- just in case you don't know your mom as well as you think you do. Gifts is rolling out slowly in select cities now and will expand in the coming weeks. Though, it also has a viral element since once you've been sent a gift you are also blessed with the ability to send gifts yourself. Check out the source links for more details.

Deep In the Heart of Texas: The Westin La Cantera Hill Country Resort

The Texas Hill Country reveals itself in sweet vignettes, until you're taken away by the soft-yet-rugged beauty and the charming little towns and the surprisingly-good wineries rolling past.??

This is a different Texas, distinct from the flatlands to the east, the rolling Panhandle to the north, and the stark mesas and cliffs to the west. It's region of rolling hills, meandering rivers, horses grazing in roadside pastures, and hospitable people who love their country music and their heritage. .

The Hill Country is one of those places where there are pleasant little surprises seemingly around every bend in the road.

One of the region's signature resorts is the Westin La Cantera Hill Country Resort, overlooking San Antonio from fifteen miles away. From here, you can be at San Antonio's great attractions - the Alamo, Riverwalk, Six Flags, or SeaWorld - in just a few minutes, and everywhere else in the Hill Country within 90 minutes.?

The Westin La Cantera borrows from varied historical influences in its architecture and design,? including European (round, castle-like towers), Spanish Mission (iron metalwork, heavy wooden doors), and pure-Texas (items from the legendary King Ranch, at one time the largest in America).

This is an AAA Four-Diamond property, named "One of the World's 500 Best Hotels" last year by "Travel & Leisure." The 508 guestrooms include 25 suites, as well as 38 "casitas" in the Texas Colonial style.

There are six pools, called The Lost Quarry Pools, connected by bridges and channels, and set amidst locally-quarried rock. The Resort Golf Course has been ranked among the country's best by both "Golf Digest" and "Golf" magazine. The Palmer Course was designed by - who else? - Arnold Palmer. The Academy is one of the better golf schools in Texas. And the Castle Rock Health Club & Spa provides state-of-the-art facilities.

The signature restaurant is Francesca's at Sunset, with South Texas cuisine touched by a bit of the Southwest. Brannon's Caf? offers regional specialties, and there are two other eateries, as well.?

In addition, the Westin La Cantera has a story for every public facility on the property. For instance, Francesca's evokes the story of a West Texas maiden whose tale of lost love is said to still echo in the mysterious winds of Fort Stockton. Brannon's Caf? is named for the previous owner of this land. Then there's Steinheimer's Lounge, named for a German immigrant who found treasure...and supposedly buried it in a nearby town called Belton.

The Westin La Cantera is only an hour from the old town of Fredericksburg, settled by German emigrants in the mid-1800's and today filled with eateries offering schnitzel and strudel, unique shops and galleries, the tiny "Sunday Houses" used by the German famers who came in from the hinterlands to town on the weekends, and, believe it or not, a world-class museum. Fredericksburg was the home of World War II admiral Chester Nimitz...and is now home of the National Museum of the Pacific War.?

Close by is the legendary "town" - crossroads, really - of Luckenbach, site of the honky-tonk where Willie Nelson got his start. Also, take a drive on the Texas Hill Country Wine Trail, where you'll come across delightful little wineries like Pedernales Cellars and Grape Creek Vineyard. Nearby is President Lyndon B. Johnson's ranch, on his beloved Pedernales River.

Drive slowly through the Texas Hill Country. You'll be stopping a lot.

HBT: Mets must extend Wright or Dickey's gone

When it comes to what R.A. Dickey is going to do once his contract is up with the Mets, he says he views he and David Wright as something of a package deal for the Mets:

?If I don?t see them pursuing David hard,? Dickey said, ?I think it would be a message to everybody that they?re content to spend the next five or six years rebuilding this organization. Rather than trying to be competitive, and trying to rebuild it at the same time.

?I think you can do both. I think (doing both is) what they want to do.

?But if you see them not really pursue him hard, that?s the message that I get. Unless they trade him and get multiple, big-league pieces back.?

Both Dickey and Wright have team options through 2013 and, clearly, the Mets are going to want to work on Wright first. ?The Mets have made every indication that they?re doing to try to lock up Wright. ?I think the bigger question for Dickey is whether he can come close to matching his 2012 season next year. ?Because if he, as many knuckleballers have in the past, starts to get a bit erratic out there, it would probably give a lot of team?s pause about signing him to a significant deal.

Spaniards rage against austerity near Parliament

Protestors march to the parliament against austerity measures announced by the Spanish government, in Madrid, Spain, Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012. Spain's Parliament has taken on the appearance of a heavily guarded fortress with dozens of police blocking access from every possible angle, hours ahead of a protest against the conservative government's handling of the economic crisis. The demonstration, organized behind the slogan 'Occupy Congress,' is expected to draw thousands of people. It is due to start around 1730 GMT Tuesday. Madrid authorities said some 1,300 police would be deployed. (AP) ? Spain's government was hit hard by the country's financial crisis on multiple fronts Tuesday as protestors enraged with austerity cutbacks and tax hikes clashed with police near Parliament, a separatist-minded region set elections seen as an independence referendum and the nation's high borrowing costs rose again

More than 1,000 riot police blocked off access to the Parliament building in the heart of Madrid, forcing most protesters to crowd nearby avenues and shutting down traffic at the height of the evening rush hour.

Police used batons to push back some protesters at the front of the march attended by an estimated 6,000 people as tempers flared, and some demonstrators broke down barricades and threw rocks and bottles toward authorities.

Television images showed officers beating protesters in response, and an Associated Press television producer saw five people dragged away by police and two protesters bloodied. Spanish state TV said at least 28 were injured, including two officers, and that 22 people were detained. Independent Spanish media reported higher numbers that could not immediately be confirmed.

The demonstration, organized with an "Occupy Congress" slogan, drew protesters from all walks of life weary of nine straight months of painful economic austerity measures imposed by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and his solid majority of lawmakers. Smaller demonstrations Tuesday attracted hundreds of protesters in Barcelona and Seville.

Angry Madrid marchers who got as close as they could to Parliament, 250 meters (yards) away, yelled "Get out!, Get out! They don't represent us! Fire them!"

"The only solution is that we should put everyone in Parliament out on the street so they know what it's like," said Maria Pilar Lopez, a 60-year-old government secretary.

Lopez and others called for fresh elections, claiming the government's hard-hitting austerity measures are proof that the ruling Popular Party misled voters when it won power last November in a landslide.

While Rajoy has said he has no plans to cut pensions for Spaniards, Lopez fears her retirement age could be raised from 65 to as much as 70. Three of her seven nieces and nephews have been laid off since Rajoy ousted Spain's Socialists, and she said the prospect of them finding jobs "is very bleak."

Spain is struggling in its second recession in three years with unemployment near 25 percent. The country has introduced austerity measures and economic reforms in a bid to convince its euro partners and investors that it is serious about reducing its bloated deficit to 6.3 percent of gross domestic product in 2012 and 4.5 percent next year.

The deficit reached ?50.1 billion ($64.8 billion), equivalent to 4.77 percent of GDP, through August, the government said Tuesday. Secretary of State for the Budget Marta Fernandez Curras said the deficit "is under control."

Spain has been under pressure from investors to apply for European Central Bank assistance in keeping its borrowing costs down. Rajoy has yet to say whether Madrid will apply for the aid, reluctant to ask since such assistance comes with strings attached.

Also Tuesdaythe president of the economically powerful but heavily indebted Catalonia region called early elections for November, two years ahead of schedule after Rajoy last week rejected a demand to grant the the region special fiscal powers.

Many Catalonia residents speak Catalan and don't feel Spanish, and the vote was announced two weeks after a massive rally in Barcelona by Catalans seeking independence, greater autonomy from Spain or more control of tax revenue sent to the central government in Madrid.

Concerns over Spain's public finances also came to the forefront earlier Tuesday when the Treasury sold ?3.98 billion ($5.14 billion) in short-term debt but at a higher cost. It sold ?1.39 billion in three-month bills at an average interest rate of 1.2 percent, up from 0.95 percent in the last such auction Aug. 28, and ?2.58 billion in six-month bills on a yield of 2.21 percent, up from 2.03 percent.

The government is expected to present a new batch of economically painful reforms on Thursday when it unveils a draft budget for 2013.

On Friday, an auditor will release the results of stress tests on Spanish banks hit hard by the collapse of the country's real estate sector, which drove Spanish economic growth until the 2008 financial crisi hit. The government will then judge how much of a ?100 billion loan it will tap to help bail out the banks. Initial estimates say the banks will need some ?60 billion.

Ocean on Jupiter moon Europa likely deep

Missions hoping to explore the huge subsurface ocean thought to exist on Jupiter's moon Europa may have to dig deep ? really deep.

Water stays in a liquid state near Europa's surface for just a few tens of thousands of years or so, new research suggests.

That's a blink of an eye in geological terms, since our solar system is more than 4.5 billion years old.

"A global water ocean may be present, but relatively deep below the surface ? around 25 to 50 kilometers," Kl?ra Kalousov? of France's University of Nantes and Charles University in Prague said in a statement on Monday.

"There could be areas of liquid water at much shallower depths, say around 5 kilometers, but these would only exist for a few tens of thousands of years before migrating downwards," Kalousov? added. [ Gallery: Photos of Europa ]

Many researchers think Europa, which is about 1,900 miles (3,100 km) wide, harbors an enormous global ocean beneath its shell of ice.

While Europa's surface is frigid, heat generated in the moon's interior by Jupiter's gravitational pull keeps this ocean ? which may be 60 miles (100 km) deep ? from freezing solid.

Here on Earth, life thrives wherever liquid water is found. So Europa is an intriguing target for future missions seeking signs of life elsewhere in the solar system.

But scientists don't know how difficult it would be for a future Europa probe to access the moon's ocean, because they're not sure how deep beneath the crust it lies.

Some researchers have speculated that pockets of liquid water may persist just a few miles below the surface, but the new study throws cold water on that prospect.

Kalousov? mathematically modeled how mixtures of liquid water and solid ice behave in a variety of conditions. She found that differences in density and viscosity, along with several other factors, probably cause water near Europa's surface to migrate downward rapidly through partially melted ice to meet up with the larger ocean.

Europa isn't the only moon in the solar system that may have an underground ocean. Fellow Jovian moons Callisto and Ganymede might have one, for example, and so might Saturn's icy satellite Enceladus.

The new study could help scientists better understand these frigid worlds, as well as Saturn's huge moon Titan, which has a hydrocarbon-based weather system, Kalousov? said.

"As well as helping us to better understand Europa?s water cycle, this research could provide insight into icy moons that are geologically active, such as Enceladus, and worlds that have cycles connecting the interior with a surface atmosphere, such as Titan," she said.

Kalousov? will present the research at the European Planetary Science Congress in Madrid on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Discover Bank will pay millions in fees to settle accusations by regulators that it pressured credit card customers to buy costly add-on services like payment protection and credit monitoring.

Discover, the sixth-biggest U.S. credit card issuer, will pay a $14 million fine and refund $200 million directly to more than 3.5 million customers, federal authorities said Monday.

The company's call-center workers enrolled customers in the programs without their consent, misled them about the benefits and left customers thinking the products were free, regulators said.

The action was brought by the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Discover said this summer that it expected an enforcement action about add-on products.

It is only the third public enforcement action by the consumer bureau, which was created under the 2010 financial overhaul law to protect consumers from excessive or hidden fees and other financial threats. The first was a similar order against Capital One, another big issuer of cards.

American Express also expects to pay refunds and fines related to add-on products, according to its most recent quarterly filing with regulators.

Discover is part of Discover Financial Services. In a statement late Friday, chairman and CEO David Nelms said: "We have worked hard to earn the loyalty of our cardmembers, and we are committed to marketing our products responsibly."

Discover's telemarketing scripts included misleading language that confused consumers about whether they were buying a product or just agreeing to consider it, the agencies said. They said telemarketers spoke quickly during the part of the call where the prices and terms of products are described.

The order mentions four products sold by Discover: Payment Protection, Credit Score Tracker, Identity Theft Protection and Wallet Protection. Anyone who paid for those services between Dec. 1, 2007, and Aug. 31, 2011, will be repaid at least 90 days' worth of fees. About 2 million customers will be repaid all of the fees they were charged.

In addition to the refunds and fine, Discover agreed to change its telemarketing approach and employ an independent auditor to oversee its compliance with the order.

Fort Campbell Suicide Prevention Efforts Target a Killer ? Clarksville ...

?

Fort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne DivisionFort Campbell, KY ? While suicide has long been believed to be a silent killer, the command at Fort Campbell and the 101st Airborne Division believe the warning signs often sound the loudest alarms. Knowing those warning signs can mean the difference between life and death.

?We would like our soldiers to look at brain injuries and illnesses much in the same way they look at physical injuries and illnesses,? said Maj. Gen. James C. McConville, commanding general of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and Fort Campbell. ?Prevention and early intervention are the secrets to success. Our Soldiers don?t have problems going to see a doctor when they are physically injured or ill, yet they are sometimes reluctant to do so with behavioral health issues. Knowing this, we are putting embedded behavioral health teams at the brigade level to provide this service at the point of need and make it more convenient to get.?

The Department of the Army has designated September as Army Suicide Prevention Month. Communicating with others is the first step toward preventing suicide. Reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness ? it is a sign of strength.

The Department of the Army has designated September as Army Suicide Prevention Month. Communicating with others is the first step toward preventing suicide. Reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness ? it is a sign of strength.

As part of the U.S. Army?s Suicide Prevention Month, Fort Campbell and the 101st Airborne Division will host several events throughout the week to educate, train and prepare soldiers, families and civilians on spotting the warning signs of suicide. Community members will also receive briefings on how to live healthier by making better decisions on how to handle the stressors that come with Army life. The week culminates with a Suicide Stand Up Day, September 27th-28th, with training seminars led within soldiers? units. A wellness walk, September 29th, beginning at 9:00am at the Sportsman?s Lodge, will provide a healthy, family-friendly way to deal with any lingering frustrations or stress in the tradition of a German Volksmarch.

During the Suicide Stand Up Day, soldiers will participate in ASIST, or Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, a program aimed at educating community members on how to spot warning signs of risky behavior and how to effectively intervene, as well as group discussions with their unit leaders, and training facilitated by master resilience trainers. Units will also lead esprit de corps events for additional team building and to balance out the weight of the issues discussed.

Soldiers are not the only ones in training on how to handle stress and prevent suicide. In addition to suicide prevention training traditionally offered, families and Department of the Army civilians also received the ASIST training and are encouraged to participate in the Wellness Walk September 29th. Family members have also started to receive resilience training that follows the model of Comprehensive Soldier Fitness, balancing the mind, body, spirit, and emotions. Some units have even taken to combining soldiers and their spouses for couples? resilience training classes.

?Resilience training helps to empower the soldiers and family members at Fort Campbell. Resilience is not just about coping with the ups and downs of a deployment, but helps to teach skills that are useful in our daily lives,? said Jennifer Sztalkoper, one of the spouse master resilience trainers for the 4th Brigade Combat Team. ?For example, getting stuck at the gate, when a person is late for formation or a family readiness group meeting, may bring on feelings of anger or anxiety and panic. Resilience training gives soldiers and family members the tools that they can pull on when such a situation arises so they do not start screaming at the gate guard or ruin the rest of their day.?

For Sztalkoper, who is also a military spouse, the issue of suicide was not introduced to her by life with the Army.

?As a child of a parent who committed suicide, I only wish that my mother had knowledge of such resiliency skills such as ?Hunt the Good Stuff,? A-T-C (the relationship between an event, our thoughts, and consequences), and put it in perspective,? she said. ?I can only speculate on whether these skills could have been helpful in giving her a new perspective on her life and how to deal with the challenging moments.?

Soldiers need support from their leaders, battle buddies and families, a group McConville calls the ?Golden Triangle.? With that in mind, Fort Campbell and 101st Airborne Division leadership has taken a holistic approach to preventing suicide within the ranks, by including families, Department of the Army civilians and outside organizations such as the USO Fort Campbell in the efforts.

?We didn?t want education to simply stop with the soldiers and families,? said JoJo Huber, health promotion officer for the community health promotion council. ?Through programs offered by Army Community Services within the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, we knew we could reach spouses and family members and teach them the warning signs and how to deal with their own stress as well. Reaching out to organizations on post like USO Fort Campbell seemed like a natural next step because we need our community to support our efforts as well.?

USO Fort Campbell came through with a new program offered in October for military couples. The Oxygen for Your Relationship seminar has been featured at military installations across the nation as part of the USO?s Warrior and Family Care mission.

?At USO Fort Campbell, we are continually exploring new ways to support our community. We?re excited to bring the Oxygen for Your Relationship train-the-trainer and seminar to Fort Campbell as part of our mission to lift the spirits of America?s Troops and Families,? said Kari Brown, director of USO Fort Campbell. ?The seminar includes a relationship assessment, the intensive training session, and an ongoing support network. This support network is a particularly important component, as it includes access to a virtual resource center that includes training videos, articles, and live-streaming videos of experts so couples can continue strengthening their relationship after they leave the seminar.?

The USO Fort Campbell will begin offering the seminars to military couples in the Fort Campbell community starting this fall.

One of the more traditional aspects of suicide prevention is the medical community?s involvement, and ensuring prompt access to quality health care is an essential component to the Fort Campbell community?s approach to suicide prevention. Recently, embedded behavioral health teams, a mixture of active duty and civilian personnel, were implemented at the 1st and 4th Brigade Combat Team footprints, and offer services within close proximity of soldiers.

?Placing embedded behavioral health assets in the brigade footprint creates ease of access for junior enlisted soldiers who may not have their own transportation, and it also demystifies the image of a mental health clinic by simply being there,? said Capt. Ashley Chatigny, 4th Brigade Combat Team clinical director for embedded behavioral health. ?The added bonus for commanders is that they now have a relationship with these professionals who can help them deal with concerns about their soldiers or personnel.?

Making behavioral health care convenient is critical, Chatigny said, and that is why the medical community at Fort Campbell and within the 101st Airborne Division has decided to embed health professionals so close to where soldiers spend so much time.

?We are working to fill positions so that all the brigade combat teams can stand up embedded behavioral health teams in the near future,? she said.

Soldiers, Department of the Army civilians and family members deserve healthy, supportive environments and the Fort Campbell and 101st Airborne Division community is committed to raising awareness of the tools and resources available to prevent suicide and increase resiliency.

Fort Campbell and 101st Airborne Division soldiers save lives every day in combat. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder, this community can save lives too.

Switched On: The iPod's modern family

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

Switched On The iPod's modern family

If you bet that Apple was going to turn the square, occasionally wrist-strapped iPod nano into a MOTOACTV-like watch that would provide a glanceable window into iPhone apps, you lost. Clearly, Apple could have gone that route. It teased in the last generation with an expanding selection of watch faces and used this generation to add Bluetooth and enable a thinner design via the new Lightning connector. Nevertheless, Apple decided to forgo the embryonic smartwatch market. Indeed, it returned to the larger, longer iPod nano school of yore, but with the single-button design of its iOS mobile devices complementing a multitouch interface.

The watch faces may be gone, but the new iPod nano regains the ability to play video while retaining photo display and Nike+ integration. It has become the equivalent of the lineup's feature phone, albeit with a better user interface. Examined in context, the new clip-free iPod nano looks more at home as a midrange option between the tiny iPod shuffle and the now larger iPod touch.

Propecia ? the Queen of Hair Loss Treatment | Health and Fitness ...

Propecia may sound like a fancy girls name but when it comes to dealing with hair loss she is definitely the Queen of hair restoration medications.? Of all the hair loss products on the market there are only two medications that are approved by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) as clinically proven to promote hair growth and hair regrowth while reversing baldness.

Finasteride or Propecia is one, and Minoxidil (Rogaine or Foam Rogaine) is the other and these are the only medications that the FDA has approved and only after very extensive clinical trials.

What is Baldness?

Baldness and hair loss is caused by testosterone, and in particular a version of it known as dihydrotestosterone or DHT, the male hormone that makes us look and sound like guys.

The trouble with testosterone and DHT is that after we become adults they start having a very different set of effects on our body.

You may start noticing hair grow out of your nose or out of your ears ? why it does that we have no idea, but we also know that hair loss on our head also starts and we simply don?t buy into all the aerodynamic explanations that keep coming our way.

DHT starts to constrict the blood supply to your follicles and this starts to show initially as thinning hair leading to baldness.? If you don?t start a hair loss remedy pretty soon after baldness sets in then you?ll only be able to get some hair on there if you go get a hair transplant.

A hair transplant is a pretty drastic and expensive way of hair replacement and it?s better to deal with the problem before it gets to that point.? Tackling hair loss as soon as it starts is the best way of dealing with baldness ? remember offense in this case is the best form of defense!

Enter Propecia ? she?ll make your hair stand on end!

Propecia tackles hair loss by directly working on your levels of DHT in your body.

By lowering the level of DHT that leaves less to attack your follicles and so they stay healthier for longer.

Propecia doesn?t just do that though ? Propecia actively works to stop DHT from binding itself to follicles and choking off the blood flow.

How do I buy Propecia?

Before you can get your hands on one of the most popular hair loss treatments you?ll need to get a doctor to write a Propecia prescription for you.

You?ll find you can order Propecia easily and simply online or at your local pharmacy but you?ll find it cheaper online than in town.

How do I take Propecia?

Propecia is just one simple pill that is taken each day.? Your doctor will prescribe a dosage that is suitable for you.

Often you?ll be recommended to use a medicated shampoo such as Nizoral to help keep your scalp and hair in top condition.

Other than that, there?s nothing more to say ? it?s that easy!

How safe is Propecia?

Bottom line, Propecia is safe! It does have the potential for one major side effect, and you need to decide if you?re willing to risk that side effect. And that side effect is possible libido loss.? Yes, you could potentially lose interest in sex and perhaps have issues with getting or maintaining an erection.

So if that particularly huge side effect isn?t an issue for you, then Propecia may be for you..

Propecia went through a five year clinical program to test out how effective it is at hair restoration.? Not only that it was tested rigorously to see what the side effects were and it is perfectly safe when used as instructed, with the one side effect previously mentioned.

Remember, Propecia is only one of two medications that the FDA has approved not only for effective hair loss treatment but also because it is safe to use.? If you want to see how big a deal that is, just take a look at all the hair loss treatments that are out there and ask yourself, why only two are FDA approved!

When should I start Propecia?

The golden rule is that the sooner you start treating your hair loss condition the faster and better the results will be.

Propecia has been clinically tested and demonstrated to help regenerate hair on bald patches on the head and that is a big, big leap ahead compared to other hair treatments.

You?ll find that Propecia is not only simple to use and highly effective but very cost effective.? Many people spend thousands of dollars on hair treatments that simply don?t work.? Because Propecia has had FDA approval you know that it is not only safe but that it works!

I?ve tried tons of hair loss products and review them at my site. You can learn from my mistakes. Want to see what I am using now?? Hint: It?s not what you think.? Visit my web page to find out more ? there?s a plethora of information on every hair loss treatment imaginable.

Canadian Auto Workers, GM reach tentative contract

TORONTO (Reuters) - The Canadian Auto Workers union said on Thursday it reached a tentative four-year contract with General Motors Co, after a day of fighting words from union leader Ken Lewenza and hours of grueling negotiations.

Earlier on Thursday, Lewenza said that if the two sides did not resolve their differences by late afternoon, he would give notice of a strike. Instead, talks continued into the evening.

"In today's economy, today's market share, it meets our goals," the CAW president said of the GM deal, which mirrored Monday's agreement with Ford Motor Co on wages and benefits.

The CAW, which represents some 20,000 workers at the Detroit Three automakers, has been pushing to finalize agreements with GM and Fiat SpA's Chrysler since reaching the Ford deal.

Speaking at a news conference, Lewenza said GM had agreed to add a third shift to its "flex" line in Oshawa, Ontario, worth 900 jobs, and create 100 positions at its St. Catharines, Ontario, facility.

GM had planned to shut down Oshawa's three-shift "consolidated line" in June 2013, but that line is now slated to operate with at least one shift until June 2014, Lewenza said.

The fate of the consolidated line was a key issue in talks, as it employs about 2,000 workers, nearly a quarter of the CAW's workforce at GM. Lewenza said the union now expected that no one with seniority would be on layoff at GM by the end of the new contract.

TWO DOWN

The Ford deal set a framework for talks with GM and Chrysler thanks to pattern bargaining, a long-standing union strategy meant to ensure no company has a labor cost advantage over the others.

Lewenza said the GM deal matched the pattern set at Ford. That agreement freezes wages for existing workers for the first three years. Workers will get a cost-of-living adjustment in the fourth year, and a series of lump-sum bonuses. New hires will start at a lower hourly rate than under the previous contract and take longer to reach the top level of the pay scale.

Lewenza urged Chrysler workers to be patient as bargaining continues, and said his sense was that Chrysler's team had been waiting for talks with GM to wrap up.

TWO-TIER DEBATE

Lewenza said the new tentative deal limited the role of GM's supplementary workforce employees, casual workers paid lower wages. The workers' roles were expanded in the last round of bargaining, he said, but they would now be brought on only for product launches and similar extraordinary periods.

The fate of the supplementary workers, who are unique to GM, proved a sticking point on Thursday. The CAW opposes a permanent lower-wage tier.

The Detroit Three and the United Auto Workers have used a two-tier wage structure in the United States for the past several years to bring labor costs closer to those of foreign automakers. But the CAW has been adamant that new hires must eventually reach the top of the pay scale.

CAW workers at the Detroit Three earn an average of $34 in base hourly wage, compared with an average $28 for UAW workers, the Canadian union says.

Unionized workers at Ford's plants in Canada will vote on the tentative agreement this weekend. Lewenza did not say when GM's ratification votes would take place.
