Fishers' Sliga wins another national wrestling title | High school ...

Mitch Sliga came up just short of a state wrestling title in his first two years at Fishers High School, but he continues to add impressive hardware to his trophy case.

Sliga won his second consecutive 189-pound title at the ASICS/Vaughn Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman championships this week in Fargo, N.D., beating Pensylvania?s Javon Reyes 1-0, 7-0 in the finals. He is now wrestling in the Cadet division freestyle championships at 189, which he also won last year. The tournament wraps up on Saturday.

The junior and cadet nationals are held in Fargo every summer and generally are considered USA Wrestling?s top invividual event for high school age wrestlers. It also is billed as the world?s largest wrestling competition. Sliga won the ?triple crown? at 189 last year when he won the Greco-Roman, freestyle and folkstyle titles, but he won?t be able to repeat that this year after finishing fourth in the USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals earlier this year. The Cadet division is for wrestlers born in either 1995 or 1996.

Sliga has an 80-4 record in his two seasons at Fishers and has finished third in the state at 189 in both years. He also was a member of Fishers? Class 5A state championship football team last November, but has said he plans to concentrate exclusively on wrestling in the future.

In other results involving Indiana wrestlers in Fargo, Perry Meridian?s Kirk Johnson finished eighth at junior 160 in Greco-Roman; and Fort Wayne Carroll?s Conner Lefever finished eighth at junior 171 in Greco-Roman.
