Schwarzenegger bruised and battered shooting movie (AP)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? Arnold Schwarzenegger has been banged around and bloodied while filming a contemporary Western movie in Albuquerque.

The New York Post ( http://nyp.st/sa9ziV) reports the former California governor posted on Twitter that he got a little banged up on the set Thursday of "The Last Stand," in which he portrays a small town sheriff who takes on a drug kingpin.

Schwarzenegger thanked the medical staff who returned him to action an hour later.

A photo shows what appears to be a bloody cut running down from the middle of Schwarzenegger's forehead.

Schwarzenegger did not provide details of what happened.

Schwarzenegger has also been posting tweets and pictures about his offset activities, which have included sightseeing and shopping for warm clothing for cast members.

White House slams ad showing Obama-Chavez "kiss" (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? An advertising campaign that depicts President Barack Obama kissing two male world leaders on the mouth drew a critical response from the White House on Thursday.

"The White House has a longstanding policy disapproving of the use of the president's name and likeness for commercial purposes," said White House Spokesman Eric Schultz.

The "Unhate" campaign for Italian clothing firm Benetton showed various world leaders kissing, including Obama lip-locked with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, a longtime Washington adversary.

The White House jealously guards Obama's image and objected last year when a garment company transformed a picture of him, in what appeared to be one its winter coats during a trip to China, into a billboard overlooking Times Square in New York. The advert was subsequently taken down.

Schultz declined to say if the White House would contact Benetton directly to express its objections.

The ad also depicts an amorous German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who have butted heads over a European debt plan, as well as Pope Benedict kissing a male imam on the mouth.

Benetton withdrew the ad after the Vatican protested on Wednesday. The Vatican is taking legal action to stop distribution of the image.

U.S.-China tensions risk spilling over into Asia summit (Reuters)

NUSA DUA, Indonesia (Reuters) ? Tensions between the United States and China threaten to spill over into meetings of Asia-Pacific leaders from Friday, with President Barack Obama declaring his intention on the eve of the gathering to assert U.S. influence in the region.

Obama said in Australia Thursday, on his last stop before jetting to the meetings in neighboring Indonesia, that the U.S. military would expand its Asia-Pacific role despite budget cuts, declaring America was "here to stay" as a Pacific power.

And days earlier, as host of the Asia Pacific Economic Co-Operation forum in Hawaii, Obama had voiced growing frustration at China's trade practices and pushed for a new Asia-Pacific trade deal with some of Beijing's neighbors.

The Indonesia meetings, on the resort island of Bali, bring together the 10-member Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and eight dialogue partners, including the United States, China, Russia and Japan. Bilateral meetings are held on Friday before a full East Asia summit Saturday.

Earlier this week, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged claimants to the South China Sea not to resort to intimidation to push their cause in the potentially rich waters, an indirect reference to China ahead of the Bali summit.

China and several ASEAN countries have clashed over sovereignty of the waters, believed to be rich in natural resources and straddling vital trade lanes.

Clinton called for candid discussion of the maritime dispute at the summit, which could embolden some Southeast Asian countries with maritime claims, though China says it does not want such talks to take place and that the issue should be resolved via bilateral negotiations.

"Introducing a contentious subject into the meeting would only affect the atmosphere of cooperation and mutual trust, damaging the hard-won setting of healthy development in the region," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said on Wednesday. "That's is beyond any doubt."

Obama has declared that U.S. engagement in the Asia-Pacific region was "absolutely critical," feeding China's longstanding fears of being encircled by the United States and its allies.

"As we end today's wars, I have directed my national security team to make our presence and missions in the Asia Pacific a top priority," Obama said Thursday in a major speech on Washington's vision for the Asia-Pacific region.

"As a result, reductions in U.S. defense spending will not -- I repeat, will not -- come at the expense of the Asia Pacific."

Nervous about China's growing clout, U.S. allies such as Japan and South Korea have sought assurances from the United States that it would be a strong counterweight in the region.

A first step in extending the U.S. military reach into Southeast Asia will see U.S. Marines, naval ships and aircraft deployed to northern Australia from 2012.

That deployment to Australia, which by 2016 will reach a taskforce of 2,500 U.S. troops, is small compared with the 28,000 troops stationed in South Korea and 50,000 in Japan.

But the presence in Darwin, only 820 km (500 miles) from Indonesia, will allow the United States to quickly reach into Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean.

Obama acknowledged China's unease at what it sees as attempts by Washington to encircle it, pledging to seek greater cooperation with Beijing.

He added: "We'll seek more opportunities for cooperation with Beijing, including greater communication between our militaries to promote understanding and avoid miscalculation."

The new de facto U.S. base in Australia expands the direct U.S. military presence in Asia beyond South Korea and Japan and into Southeast Asia, an area where China has growing economic and strategic interests.

It will also put more U.S. troops, ships and aircraft much closer to the South China Sea.

CHINA QUESTIONS U.S. DEPLOYMENT TO AUSTRALIA

China has questioned the new U.S. deployment, with a foreign ministry spokesman raising doubts about whether strengthening such alliances helped the region pull together at a time of economic gloom.

But overall its official reaction has been restrained, with an impending leadership succession preoccupying the ruling Communist Party and leaving Beijing anxious to avoid diplomatic fireworks.

Reaction from some state media was harsher.

"It wouldn't come as a surprise if the United States is trying to seek hegemony in the region, which would be in line with its aspirations as a global superpower," China's state news agency Xinhua said in a commentary.

Obama said the increased focus on the Asia-Pacific region was essential for America's economic future.

"As the world's fastest-growing region - and home to more than half the global economy - the Asia Pacific is critical to achieving my highest priority: creating jobs and opportunity for the American people," he said.

More Americans expecting to retire in their 80s

Workers are growing to accept the idea that they may be working long after they've become eligible for senior discounts. Yet rather than fixate on their target retirement age, they're increasingly focused on how much money they'll need to retire, according to a new national survey by Wells Fargo & Co.

    1. Love with no age limit: Couple marries at 88 and 87

After dating for 17 years, Paul Walker and Ann Thayer of Lewiston, Maine finally married Tuesday. The happy couple hopes t...

    4. Can women keep a secret? TODAY's Professionals debate
    5. Leggings as pants? Pippa says yes!

This shift is coupled with their growing frustration that they're not saving enough, and the reality that many haven't created a detailed retirement plan.

One of the striking results of the survey released Wednesday is that 25 percent of the respondents said they'll need to work until at least age 80 because they will not have enough money to retire comfortably.

Even those who plan on retiring expect they may continue working in some capacity and for various reasons:

  • About 75 percent said they expect to work in their retirement years;
  • About 39 percent said they will need to work to afford things they want or to maintain their lifestyle; and
  • Another 35 percent say they'll work because they want to.

It seems the old expectations of working until one's 60s and then taking it easy have been cast aside.

In the survey, 76 percent of the workers interviewed said it's more important to have a specific amount saved before retirement, regardless of age. Only 20 percent said it is more important to retire at a specific age, regardless of savings.

This change in attitude of working to save a specific dollar amount is grounded in reality, said Joe Ready, a director of Wells Fargo Institutional Retirement and Trust. But he notes that it raises a lot of larger issues for the workplace and the economy that have yet to play out. For instance, evaluating the potential impact on advancement opportunities for younger workers if their older peers stay on the job.

The survey focused on 1,500 respondents in their 20s through their 70s with household income of $25,000 to $99,999, and household investable assets of $99,999 or less. The intent was to center in on middle-class workers and retirees. The telephone interviews were completed between early August and late September.

These findings come at a time when a volatile stock market continues to create anxiety over 401(k) balances, and political leaders are discussing cuts to future Social Security and Medicare benefits.

About half of those surveyed between the ages of 25 and 49 say they are willing to accept future reductions in Social Security and Medicare benefits to help lower the nation's total debt. For those aged 50 to 59 that drops to 28 percent, and only 19 percent of those over 60 agree with such program cuts.

That signifies a shift in the expectations of government support in retirement, said Laurie Nordquist, another Wells Fargo retirement director.

More than a quarter of people in their 20s and 30s don't expect any income at all from Social Security during their retirement years. On average, people in this age group who expect to receive some Social Security payments predict that they will cover only 20 percent of their income. Currently, the Social Security Administration says benefits replace about 40 percent of the average worker's income in retirement.

The survey also shows workers are coming to terms with the fact that they aren't saving enough.

The median saving goal for retirement among survey respondents was $350,000, while their median savings was just $25,000, about 7 percent of the goal.

Nordquist said it has been clear for several years that workers haven't been saving enough. That's due in part to a lack of trust in the stock market ? 68 percent surveyed said they aren't confident in the stock market as a place to invest for retirement.

Retirement planning is still something that most workers haven't focused on. The survey shows 69 percent of respondents do not have a written financial plan. A majority ? 60 percent ? said they were overwhelmed or that it was pointless because they're too far behind to catch up.

That means that they don't expect to have much money to leave behind. About 43 percent said they don't expect to leave an inheritance to their children. Even among households surveyed with more than $100,000 in income, 29 percent don't expect to leave any savings behind.
