Home Improvement Tips To Increase The Value Of Your Home

The demand for products and techniques related to it are on the rise. Now is the time to start with it. Here are some tips that you can use to get you started with your home improvement plans.

Windows

Building or buying a window box for windows in the front of your house is a very effective way to add color and visual interest to a drab exterior. A filled planter can be very heavy, so make sure that you use cleats to secure the box to the house. You can update the look by planting seasonal herbs, flowers, or grasses.

When painting the exterior of your home, use architectural details, doors and windows to add visual interest by painting them (or around them) with an accent color that coordinates with your main color. This keeps your color scheme from looking too monochromatic and helps interesting design features to stand out.

Secure your windows from potential burglars with nails! All you have to secure your windows is partially drive a nail in the inside of the sash on both sides of the window just above the bottom panel. You can make the nail removable by drilling the hole instead of driving the nail in. Allow the nail to protrude over the bottom panel so that it can't be opened without removing the nail.

Replace your windows. If you have cracked, damaged, or drafty windows, replacing them is a quick home improvement project that has a great payoff. Replacing them with weather resistant or high efficiency windows will allow them to pay for themselves in no time and also give your home a fresh new look.

New Windows

One energy-efficient improvement you can make to your home is to replace your windows. Older-style single-panel windows don't insulate the inside of your home nearly as well as the newer double-panel style. New windows will increase the aesthetic beauty of your home while saving you money each month in electricity bills.

Are your windows outdated? Do they provide the right insulation? Maybe one or two of them are cracked or perhaps the style and design just doesn't fit the times anymore. Updating to new windows improves the beauty of your home as well as the value. Consider getting new windows if it is time.

Velfac Fenster can offer you some of the best quality home improvement products.

To increase energy efficiency and save significantly on your utility bills, consider replacing single pane windows with newer energy efficient ones. The investment you make in new windows now will easily pay for itself over time as your utility bills will be lower and, of course, your home will be more comfortable.

Having new windows installed in your home can be very beneficial. Old windows often do not have a tight seal and allow heat and air to escape, causing an increase in your monthly electric bill. Double pane, vinyl windows are a great choice. Not only do they make your home more energy efficient, but they are easy to clean and increase your home's value.

You should now see why this hobby is very popular. There is so much you can do in it! There is also a ton of information on how to start enjoying the benefits of it. By following these tips, you are well on your way to successfully improving your home.

(AP) ? Thousands of striking Chicago public school teachers packed a city park Saturday in a show of force as union leaders and the district tried to work out the details of a tentative agreement that would end a week-long walkout.

Months of contract negotiations came down to two main issues: job security and union opposition to a new teacher evaluation process it felt was too heavily weighted on student test scores. The wrangling in one of the nation's largest school districts was being closely watched around the country because of its implications for other labor disputes at a time when unions have been losing ground.

Union leaders who announced a framework for a deal on Friday said they would not end the strike ? the first in Chicago in 25 years ? until they see an agreement in writing. Saturday's talks were aimed at settling on that exact language, and both sides were hopeful that children could be back in class on Monday.

Addressing demonstrators Saturday, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said "the struggle is not over" and there was still a long road to ensuring all residents of the city have equal access to quality schools, especially in neighborhoods beset by gang violence and poverty.

"Our mission is very clear: we fight for equal, high-quality public education for all," Jackson said. "When school opens again there will be 160 schools without a public library. ... When school opens again, there will be schools yet without books. So we fight today for schools on the South and West Side to look like schools on the North Side."

Saturday's talks were taking place at the offices of union attorney Robert Bloch, who told the Chicago Sun-Times there was still a lot of work to be done, although the sides had agreed on the most contentious issues.

The union hopes to present the wording of a deal to its House of Delegates for review on Sunday. If they approve it, students could be back in class on Monday.

On his way into the talks, Chicago Teachers Union Vice President Jesse Sharkey was optimistic that timetable was still possible.

"We're hopeful that we can do it but frankly like I said, the devil is in the details of this contract and we want it in writing," he told the Sun-Times. "We're going to go in today and hammer (out) the details."

Until teachers see the exact wording, they'll continue to strike.

"They are suspicious, you have to understand," union President Karen Lewis told reporters Friday after a meeting with nearly 800 members of the union's House of Delegates. "We have been a little burnt by the (school) board in the past."

Union members from Wisconsin, Minnesota and elsewhere joined Saturday's rally in solidarity, and speaker after speaker said the labor fight in Chicago was important for unions everywhere. Reflecting the optimism of the past few days, the gathering also had a festive atmosphere, with people pounding drums and grilling hot dogs, and children playing.

"People are going to go down and celebrate that the teachers union in Chicago stood up to the corporate reform agenda," said Bob Peterson, president of the Milwaukee Teachers' Education Association. "I think they've come out with some real victories for the kids of Chicago."

For Wisconsin teachers, the rally also served as a moment to celebrate a judge's Friday ruling striking down nearly all of a contentious state law championed by Republican Gov. Scott Walker that had effectively ended collective bargaining rights for most public workers. Walker's administration immediately vowed to appeal, while unions, which have vigorously fought the law, declared victory.

Teachers union leaders from three of Minnesota's largest school districts also organized a bus to Chicago for their members to show their support for their colleagues there.

The plan was for the bus to leave the Twin Cities about 4 a.m. Saturday, drive about seven hours, attend the rally and return home the same day, said Julie Blaha, president of the suburban Anoka-Hennepin School District's local of Education Minnesota, the state's largest teachers union. Blaha already had travelled to Chicago to assist her striking colleagues, "doing whatever they need us to do."

Members of the Boston Teachers Union were expected to make the trip on their own, said President Richard Stutman. The group already voted to send Chicago a token donation of money and took out an ad in the Chicago Sun-Times to express their support of striking teachers there.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who has blasted the union for engaging in a "strike of choice," sounded optimistic Friday, saying "the tentative framework is an honest and principled compromise that is about who we all work for: the students."

The walkout in the nation's third-largest school district canceled five days of class for more than 350,000 public school students who had just returned from summer vacation.

Until this week, Chicago teachers had not walked out since 1987, when they were on strike for 19 days.

House passes stopgap government funding plan

The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday approved a stopgap measure to fund the government for six months and eliminate any threat of a government shutdown fight that could damage lawmakers' re-election hopes.

    1. Ann Romney to attend fundraiser at Bush home

Ann Romney will attend a fundraising lunch to raise money for husband's presidential campaign at the home of former President George W. Bush next Tuesday.

    2. Dems lead in two important Senate races
    3. Polls: Obama holds the edge in Florida, Ohio and Virginia
    4. What's behind Romney's ad claim in Virginia
    5. GOP: Fed action a sign of weak economy under Obama

After spending much of the past two years fighting over cutting government spending, the Republican-controlled House voted 329-91 to slightly raise spending from current levels. Votes in favor were evenly split between Democrats and Republicans.

The bill, which heads to the Senate for a vote expected by next week, will be the last piece of substantive legislation passed by Congress before the November 6 presidential and congressional election. It must be signed into law before September 30, when current government funding runs out.

"We have to pass this important bill to maintain the continuity of our government and to prevent its shutdown," said Representative Harold Rogers, the Republican chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.

The spending measure eliminates one task that Congress needs to complete before it wrangles over the year-end "fiscal cliff" of expiring tax cuts, automatic spending cuts, a debt limit increase and other fiscal deadlines.

By keeping the government's agencies and discretionary programs funded through March 27, lawmakers buy themselves some breathing room in the post-election "lame duck" session to tackle more difficult questions - how to avoid $109 billion in automatic budget cuts that start on January 2, and whether to extend some or all of the tax cuts enacted under former President George W Bush, which expire December 31.

The Congressional Budget Office predicts that the U.S. economy will experience another recession next year if these issues are not resolved. Moody's Investors Service warned on Tuesday that the United States could lose its top-tier credit rating if Congress fails to take action to reduce U.S. debt.

Rival ratings agency Standard and Poor's cut its U.S. rating last year after a grueling battle over raising the debt limit brought the government to the brink of a historic debt default.

That standoff resulted in a budget deal that led to the automatic spending cuts, known as a sequester, which were intended as a painful incentive for Congress to come up with $1.2 trillion in additional deficit reduction. That approach failed and a "meat axe" of $109 billion in across-the-board cuts evenly split between domestic spending and military programs is scheduled to fall on January 2.

New plan on defense cuts
House Republicans Tuesday took another stab Tuesday at avoiding the automatic cuts for defense, passing a bill that orders President Barack Obama to submit a plan to protect military spending by October 15 without any revenue increases.

The measure, approved on a party line vote of 223-196, faces certain death in the U.S. Senate and has drawn a veto threat from the White House.

Republicans in the House passed a similar sequester avoidance plan in May. Authored by Representative Paul Ryan, now the Republican vice presidential nominee, it attempted to halt the cuts and protect military budgets by substituting deep cuts to programs that aid the poor, including food stamps and Medicaid healthcare.

Ryan made his first appearance on Capitol Hill on Thursday since being chosen as Mitt Romney's running mate last month, but did not participate in the debate. He voted for both the funding resolution and the sequester plan.

Amped up with election-season rhetoric, Republicans dug into their positions insisting that deficit reduction come from spending cuts alone, while Democrats insisted on some new tax revenues from the wealthy.

"You tell the president that his plan cannot include one penny of revenue for reducing the deficit. In other words, you say the president's plan has got to look like your plan," Democratic Rep. Chris Van Hollen told Republicans.

Tactical retreat
The six-month budget measure passed on Thursday marks a tactical retreat by House Republicans from their demands for deeper spending cuts this year. The so-called continuing resolution funds the government's agencies and discretionary programs -- from defense to education -- at an annual rate of $1.047 trillion, a level set as part of last year's budget deal.

Republicans were seeking a spending level that was $19 billion lower, but backed off to avoid the risk of a nasty shutdown fight that could hurt their party's election prospects in November. Congressional approval ratings plunged to new lows after last year's debt fights.

But the deal assures them that a post-election lame duck Congress won't be able to push through big spending increases.

The measure also provides some increase in funding for specific programs, including federal efforts to combat wildfires, for nuclear weapons modernization and cybersecurity initiatives.

The continuing resolution drew criticism from the conservative Club for Growth business group.

"This CR (continuing resolution) is bad policy simply because it extends big spending programs, layers on extra riders, and provides only short-term funding for the government so that politicians can leave Washington and/or avoid politically sensitive events," the group said in a statement.

Cop drags woman, 77, from car after ID refusal

Dash cam video shows a police officer dragging a 77-year-old woman out of her vehicle after she refused to show a driver's license during a routine traffic stop in Keene, Texas. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports.

By Scott Gordon, NBCDFW.com

A local Texas police department is standing by an officer who dragged a 77-year-old grandmother out of her car for speeding after she repeatedly refused to provide her driver's license.

The entire arrest was caught on video by the Keene Police Department.

The woman, Lynn Bedford, of nearby Cleburne, was stopped on Aug. 19 for driving 66 mph in a 50-mph zone.

For more, visit NBCDFW.com

Bedford told Sgt. Gene Geheb that she had a bladder infection and had to go to the bathroom, but the situation quickly escalated when the officer asked several times for her identification and she refused.

"Just hurry up; I have to go to the bathroom," she said.

"Let me see your driver's license and insurance, please," the officer asked.

She declined several times.

"No, I want to see your driver's license and insurance, please, and then I'll listen to you," the officer said.

"I'll give it to you in a minute," she replied.

"No, you give it to me now, or I'm going to take you to jail," he said.

"Well, go ahead," she said.

The officer then pulled her out of her car and handcuffed her.

Bedford's attorney, Clay Graham, of Fort Worth, said the officer overreacted.

"The officer is not very interested in listening to what she has to say," Graham said. "She gets a little frustrated. And then he just overwhelms her. That's what I see. And then it goes from routine stop to ridiculous stop."

Graham said Bedford was injured during the arrest.

He said Bedford is not interested in filing a lawsuit right now but isn't ruling it out in the future.

The lawyer said the woman was returning home from playing the piano at church when the incident occurred.

In a statement, Keene Police Chief Rocky Alberti stood by the officer's actions.

"This incident has been reviewed thoroughly by the Keene Police Department and the City of Keene Administration," Alberti said in a written statement. "All parties have concluded that Sgt. Geheb did not violate any state laws or department policies, and in fact was following department policy in regards to violators not providing identification."

Do you think the officer acted appropriately in this situation?
