Utah Man Viewed Child Porn On Mass. Flight: Police

BOSTON -- Police say a Utah man who was viewing child pornography on a Delta flight from Salt Lake City to Boston has been arrested.

Massachusetts State Police say 47-year-old Grant Smith, of Cottonwood Heights, Utah, was sitting in first class Saturday afternoon when a fellow passenger saw the pornographic images on Smith's laptop and alerted the flight crew.

Arroyo, health improving, asks for house arrest

(AP) ? Former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who tried to leave the country on medical grounds while the government scrambled to file charges against her, is well enough to leave the hospital where she was arrested last week, she and her doctors agree.

Arroyo lawyer Jose Flaminiano told a court Friday he was withdrawing his motion for a hospital arrest in favor of house arrest. Earlier, he had resisted efforts to have doctors testify about Arroyo's condition.

Arroyo is "fit to be released as outpatient," her physician Dr. Mario Ver testified Friday.

Arroyo has had three surgeries on her cervical spine, and she argued before her arrest that she needed to travel abroad for an urgent bone treatment that she claimed was unavailable in the Philippines.

The government refused to let her go this month, even after the Supreme Court ruled in her favor. She wore a head and neck brace as she was turned away from the Manila airport.

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima had said government would not object if the court decides on hospital or house arrest as long as Arroyo remains in the country. She said President Benigno Aquino III, Arroyo's successor, wants the former leader treated with respect.

But the Commission on Elections, an independent body that filed the charges against Arroyo, opposes house arrest. Commission lawyer Maria Juana Valesa asked the court to order Arroyo's transfer to a government detention facility.

Judge Jesus Mupas of the Pasay Regional Trial Court gave the commission and Arroyo until Tuesday to submit their motions and comments. In the meantime, clerk of court Joel Pelicano told reporters that Arroyo would remain at St. Luke's hospital.

Arroyo, who left office last year, is charged with ordering the rigging of 2007 congressional polls, which she denies. If convicted, she faces life imprisonment.

Aquino promised to uproot corruption in the Philippines and says he wants to start with Arroyo, accusing her of proliferating a culture of graft and eroding public trust in government.

The judge earlier ordered Arroyo's doctors at Manila's St. Luke's Medical Center to testify about her condition. Flaminiano objected, citing doctor-patient confidentiality and the fact she was no longer seeking a hospital stay, which the court had previously approved on humanitarian grounds and because of Arroyo's stature.

Sienna Miller tells of hacking paranoia (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Actress Sienna Miller said on Thursday she had been placed under a "web of surveillance" by a tabloid newspaper which listened into her messages and read emails, prompting her to accuse family and friends of leaking stories to the press.

Appearing at the Leveson inquiry into media practices and ethics, the star of movies such as "Layer Cake" and "Alfie" said she had felt violated by the constant coverage of intimate details of her private life in the press.

"(There was) this breeding of mistrust amongst all of us. Nobody could understand how this information was coming out...It was impossible to lead any kind of normal life," Miller said.

Miller's private life and particularly her romantic liaisons have long been staple fodder for the tabloid press.

The 29-year-old actress won 35,000 pounds from the Sun and the now defunct News of the World in November 2008 over her claims they had breached her privacy.

"I wanted to understand the extent of the information that they had on me," she said of the court case. "I wanted to know who knew, who had access to my telephone numbers, who had been listening to me ... I wanted to get to the bottom of it."

The Leveson inquiry, set up in July and expected to last a year, has given celebrities and others featured on newspaper front pages a chance to throw a light on how these stories were obtained and the impact they have had on their lives.

Miller said she had been spat at and abused by paparazzi seeking a good reaction shot. She described in detail how she had been terrified by the attention, how photographers drove dangerously to get a picture, making her feel that she would be safer to stay at home.

"I would often find myself -- I was 21 -- at midnight running down a dark street on my own with 10 big men chasing me," she said. "And the fact that they had cameras in their hand meant that that was legal, but if you take away the cameras, what have you got?

"You've got a pack of men chasing a woman. And obviously that's a very intimidating situation to be in."

Miller said she had eventually been shown notes made about her by a private investigator, including phone numbers, phone PIN numbers, the password to her emails and the numbers of 10 of her closest friends.

"There was just this web of surveillance which obviously makes it very easy to understand how they were getting all of this information," she told the London court room. "Everyone close to me was being monitored and electronically listened to.

"I felt violated, and paranoid and anxious constantly.

"It's outrageous, it's unfathomable to feel like they can justify doing this. The ramifications on people's lives are rarely considered by the people who are doing it."

Chevron keen for more Brazil oil, despite spill (Reuters)

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) ? Chevron (CVX.N) said on Friday it planned to invest $3 billion in Brazil over the next three years, despite uproar in the South American country after an oil spill this month caused by its offshore drilling.

Chevron was ordered to halt its drilling in Brazil this week pending investigations by the Federal Police and other authorities, after an estimated 2,400 barrels of oil leaked from its Frade field off Rio de Janeiro's coast.

Chevron's Head of Latin America and Africa operations, Ali Moshiri, said planned investments were on top of $2.1 billion the oil giant has already invested in Brazil since 1997. He said Chevron was looking out for profitable oil concessions.

"We plan to continue participating in new auctions for oil exploration blocks in Brazil, if there is creation of value and benefits," Moshiri said in a press conference in Rio de Janeiro.

Talk of expansion comes after the second-largest U.S. oil firm was fined $28 million by Brazil's environmental agency for the spill, an amount likely to rise when the energy regulator and Rio's state government fines as they have promised to do.

Auctions for oil concessions in Brazil are now suspended as the country draws up new policies for the sector that is on the verge of rapid expansion after the discovery of massive 'subsalt' offshore reserves deep under a layer of salt rock.

Moshiri said the planned investment was mainly for the $5.2 billion Papa-Terra project. It has a minority stake with the project's operator, Brazil's state-run Petrobras (PETR4.SA). Both Papa-Terra and Frade are located in the offshore Campos basin where most of Brazil's 2 million-barrel-per-day output comes from.

Analysts say the spill is likely to increasingly politicize the governance of the country's oil sector. It has already given ammunition to Rio de Janeiro state's lawmakers fighting proposals to share more oil wealth with non-producing states.

DEFIANT ON WELL PLANS

Moshiri, described as premature the government's ban on its drilling, which it had already halted voluntarily shortly after the oil leak was discovered. It said the crude leaked from fissures in the seabed after rock "parted" during drilling.

He said the company had not given up on plans to drill another separate well at Frade that would perforate through to deeper subsalt oil reserves, despite the energy regulator turning down its request for that project this week.

The regulator, the ANP, said the well would be at even greater risk of spill than the one that leaked because of the greater depths involved.

Moshiri said the spill had cost Chevron about $30 million in clean-up costs. It had invested about $20 million in the well it was drilling which it is now working to permanently seal off.

The head of Chevron's Brazil operations, George Buck, apologized for the November 8 spill at the country's Congress on Wednesday where he insisted the company used all its resources to stop the flow of oil which has now virtually ceased.

Chevron has acknowledged that it was mistaken in its estimates of pressure and rock strength in the reservoir it was targeting. It is the majority stakeholder in the Frade concession with Brazil's state-run Petrobras (PETR4.SA) and a Japanese consortium.

The only rig working for Chevron off Brazil is Transocean Ltd's (RIGN.VX) Sedco 706, which drilled the well that leaked.

Brazil's national energy regulator, ANP, said on Friday the oil stain on the ocean surface many miles out to sea was shrinking but still visible.

Israeli desert plan would uproot 30,000 Bedouin (Reuters)

AL-ARAKIB, Israel (Reuters) ? Bulldozed by Israel more than two dozen times, a village known by Bedouin Arabs as Al-Arakib is one of many ramshackle desert communities whose names have never appeared on any official map.

If Israel's parliament adopts proposed new legislation, it never will.

The plan to demolish more Bedouin homes in the southern Negev region and move 30,000 people to government-authorized villages connected to power and water lines has been hailed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a "historic opportunity" to improve Bedouin lives.

But Israeli Arab leaders, who have long complained about discrimination against their community in the Jewish state, call it "ethnic cleansing," and aim to thwart the project with protests, a general strike and appeals to the United Nations to intervene.

"I will never leave here, I intend to stay until I die," said Abu-Madyam, 46, a farmer from al-Arakib.

He and his family of nine live in a makeshift plastic-sided shack in a cemetery near the ruins of their wooden home, razed by Israeli authorities last year.

The project is the most ambitious attempt in decades by the government to resettle Negev Bedouin and free up land in the largely open spaces of southern Israel for development and construction of military bases to replace facilities in the crowded center of the country.

Some Israelis argue the Bedouin have grown too dominant in the Negev, a geographic area wedged between Hamas Islamist-ruled Gaza and the occupied West Bank where Palestinians want a state, and that they pose a possible security risk.

The area being restructured also abuts Israel's largest Negev city of Beersheba and is near several military bases.

For decades, Israeli governments have tried to attract Jewish Israelis to move to the Negev, offering mortgage and tax breaks, but the region has fewer opportunities for employment than in the heavily populated center of the country.

Only 20 percent of Israel's Jewish population lives in the Negev, which covers more than 60 percent of the nation's land area. Bedouin villages take up two percent of Negev land.

This month, Netanyahu sat down with Bedouin mayors at his office to urge them to accept the plan, which could take at least five years to implement at a cost of more than 1 billion shekels ($300 million) once legislation due to be introduced shortly becomes law.

"Our state is leaping toward the future and you need to be part of this future. We want to help you reach economic independence. This plan is designed to bring about development and prosperity," Netanyahu told the Bedouin officials.

Arabs make up about 20 percent of Israel's population of seven million, 200,000 of them Bedouin citizens.

Most of Israel's Bedouin, who predominate in the desert area that accounts for two-thirds of its territory, are descendants of nomadic tribes that had wandered across the Middle East from Biblical times.

Half of the Bedouin live in towns and villages recognized as formal communities by the government. Others live rough, in tents and shacks on patches of desert.

"If everyone sat exactly where they felt their place was, then it wouldn't be possible to develop anything," said Yisrael Scop, a senior official at the Israel Lands Authority, which would bear responsibility for carrying out the Negev plan.

NEW VILLAGES

Some new villages will be built for displaced Bedouin, Scop told Reuters in an interview. He said about 60,000 acres would be affected, with 30,000 Bedouin called upon to abandon their homes in return for monetary compensation.

Another 2,000 Bedouin who have claims against Israel for past relocation would have their cases settled under the new project.

"We cannot have such a large population living in unorganized settlement," Scop said.

Bedouin leaders in the Negev say Israel has long discriminated against their communities, denying them public funds and services, in a bid to make their inhabitants leave.

Many of them were built, the officials said, because Israel had failed in the past to offer other housing options.

In a 2008 report on Israel's policy toward Bedouin in the Negev, Human Rights Watch said the government "appears intent on maximizing its control over Negev land and increasing the Jewish population in the area for strategic, economic and demographic reasons."

"The state implements forced evictions, home demolitions and other punitive measures disproportionately against Bedouin as compared with actions taken regarding structures owned by Jewish Israelis that do not conform to planning law," the New York-based group said.

Khalil Alamour, a 42-year-old schoolteacher, plans to head to Geneva this month to a meeting of a U.N. Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights as part of a delegation to protest against the resettlement project.

His village of Al-Sira, home to 500 Bedouin, has long been tagged by Israel for demolition. It is located near an airbase.

"I always thought we could be a bridge to peace but this has not happened because we don't feel involved," Alamour said about the Bedouin, some of whom serve as volunteers in Israel's military. Unlike Jewish men and women in Israel, members of its Arab minority are exempt from conscription at the age of 18.

Alamour called the Negev plan "a second Nakba," the Arabic word for "catastrophe" that Palestinians use to describe the displacement of hundreds of thousands of them in fighting over Israel's establishment in 1948.

"We've been around for so many years, yet they treat us as little more than numbers on a map. It's shameful," he said.

Like most unauthorized Bedouin villages, Al-Sira is not hooked up to Israel's electricity grid. Alamour and his neighbors have installed their own solar panels to generate electricity, supplementing the supply with power generators.

They have run their own pipes to hook up with a regional grid to provide running water for their homes.

In the ruins of al-Arakib, Abu-Madyam vowed to hang on to land which he said was once covered by lush grapevines and bought by his grandparents more than a century ago.

"I will seek justice until my last day. I don't have any objections to Jews living here, too, but why must I give up my own rights?" he said.

Making most of scarcer aid will be vital: World Bank's Mulyani (Reuters)

WASHINGTON, Nov 22 (Reuters) ? Developing nations face weaker growth over the next two years as the euro zone debt crisis deepens and making the most of scarcer aid dollars will be vital, a senior World Bank official said on Tuesday.

World Bank Managing Director Sri Mulyani Indrawati told Reuters the biggest challenge for developing countries now was how to minimize the fallout from the euro zone crisis, which is likely to be felt through a decline in trade, workers' remittances and investment.

She said ending uncertainty around the euro zone crisis, which was driving up borrowing costs across the world, should be the focus of European policymakers.

"Ending this uncertainty is so important," Indrawati said.

"For many developing countries the choice is tougher for them because they have to choose between defending their fiscal soundness and sustainability," she added.

Indrawati said fiscal space in developing countries was already limited because current crisis was following so soon after the last global financial meltdown of 2009, which drained resources of poor nations.

She was speaking ahead of a meeting next week in Busan, South Korea, on aid effectiveness.

With budgets of rich but often highly-indebted Western donors under pressure, Indrawati said it was important that aid be made to work better through more transparency and results driven anti-poverty programs.

She said the World Bank was adopting a scorecard that could help governments in poorer countries measure aid spending and its impact on reducing poverty.

"Donors are facing a real choice between maintaining or continuing their international aid commitments," she said. "You have to be accountable for each dollar to taxpayers as well as beneficiaries, which are the poor people in developing countries," said Indrawati, a former Indonesian finance minister.

She said the arrival of new donors from fast-growing emerging powers like China or Brazil meant more focus should be put on better coordinating development program to avoid overlap.

Traditional donors have long worried that new donors will repeat mistakes they have long struggled to fix, such as the billions of dollars in debt amassed by poor countries during the 1970s and 1980s that have since been canceled .

"The strength of these new donors is not from their money but their experience and knowledge" in fighting poverty, Indrawati said. She pointed at social programs that target the poor in Brazil and Mexico that have radically reduced poverty and been replicated in Peru and even in New York City.

But Indrawati said the new donors, including private sector-led initiatives to fight malaria and HIV/AIDS, had also forced institutions like the World Bank to modernize.

"We don't want to be out of the game and want to be seen as providing global leadership in development goals and convening and coordinating across donor agencies," she said. (Editing by Kim Coghill)

Portable Breast Cancer Detector Brings Checkups To the Patient

Portable Breast Cancer Detector Brings Checkups To the PatientIt doesn't matter how advanced a breast cancer detection system is, it's only effective if patients have access to it. So Nihon University has developed a portable unit that can be taken to those without access to a hospital.

Using a technology known as the phase shift method, the handheld detector emits light with a wavelength of 850nm which is then bounced back and measured. Any areas that could be cancerous will appear darker since there's a greater concentration of blood cells which will absorb more of the light, instead of reflecting it back.

Unlike traditional mammography methods the breast doesn't need to be sandwiched flat, the detector can just be pressed against the skin and the results will be instantly displayed on an LCD. Unfortunately there's no word on when this device will be available for widespread use, or even with humans. At the moment the university is still testing it on just animals, but it has a lot of potential to bring these potentially life saving checkups to those who can't leave their homes, or who are unable to use a traditional machine. Obama on Tuesday to face NH voters now sour on him (AP)

MANCHESTER, N.H. ? President Barack Obama will visit a changed New Hampshire on Tuesday.

The independent-minded presidential swing state he won in 2008 has shifted distinctly to the right since his last visit nearly two years ago. The local economy is struggling to grow and voters are increasingly unhappy with the president's leadership.

"He's not getting my vote ? no way," construction worker Norman Berube, a 49-year-old registered independent, said while waiting for a booth at the Airport Diner recently. "This country is worse off."

Others say the same.

Recent polls show that, if the election were held today, Obama would lose by roughly 10 percentage points to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, the leading contender for the GOP nomination. That's quite a slide for an incumbent who beat Republican Sen. John McCain here by nearly the same margin just three years ago.

Still, a year before Obama's re-election, Democrats aren't panicking.

In fact, Obama's campaign is quietly confident that he can re-ignite voters' passion the more they see him, which explains why Obama is venturing to Central High School to promote elements of his jobs plan that's stalled in a divided Congress.

His visit comes just as a special deficit-reduction supercommittee in Washington is on the brink of failing to reach an agreement on how to save taxpayers $1.2 trillion over the coming decade. A fundamental divide over how much to raise taxes ? a salient issue in low-tax New Hampshire ? was proving too high a hurdle to overcome.

With finger pointing beginning in Washington, Obama was heading to New Hampshire, which his surrogates recently have showered with attention, as Republican candidates wielding anti-Obama messages swarm the state ahead of the Jan. 10 primary.

"There have been a lot of Republicans up here," said Kathy Sullivan, a New Hampshire-based member of the Democratic National Committee. "It's a good time for the people of New Hampshire to hear from the president."

On Monday alone, four of the eight GOP contenders ? Romney, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, Texas Rep. Ron Paul and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich ? campaigned in New Hampshire.

Romney, speaking to voters in Nashua, used Obama's visit to bash the president anew.

"I'd like to hear what he has to say," Romney said. "It's very clear, we're not better off than we were when he came into office."

Huntsman mocked Obama's visit. "I know the president is going to be here tomorrow. ... He can come here. Nobody cares," he told a diner in Nashua in the evening.

"If I can be so blunt about it, he had two years to get the economy cranking, and what do we have to show for it?" said Huntsman, at one time Obama's ambassador to China.

Unemployment in the state was at 5.4 percent in September, well below the national average of 9 percent.

Romney was set to start airing his first TV ads in New Hampshire on Tuesday to reinforce that message. And while Obama's job approval numbers here are weak, more alarming is polling suggesting that independents ? a key voting bloc in the presidential race ? have swung decidedly away from Obama after lifting him to victory in the state and across the country.

Independent voters helped Republicans sweep the state's congressional elections and win veto-proof majorities in both chambers of the state legislature. It was a dramatic shift for a state many believed had been shifting to the left over the last decade.

"New Hampshire is obviously going to be an important state in the general election, and it's a state where voters keep pretty close tabs on how often you visit," said Reid Cherlin, a former spokesman for Obama in New Hampshire and at the White House. "The White House sees New Hampshire as open-minded and independent ? the kind of state that may be more open to Obama's jobs pitch and less inclined to be governed by the passions of the moment, like tea party ideology."

In a likely nod to independents, Obama is expected Tuesday to prod Congress to extend a temporary cut in payroll taxes that has enjoyed bipartisan support. The tax cut will expire at the end of the year unless Congress extends it again.

Obama supports an extension and on Monday previewed his likely pitch in New Hampshire.

"There's no reason not to vote for these tax cuts," he said. "If Congress doesn't act by the end of the year, then the typical family's taxes is going to go up by roughly $1,000. That's the last thing our middle class and our economy needs right now."

Obama last visited New Hampshire in February of 2010 for a factory tour and town hall-style meeting.

But the time that has passed since then doesn't mean his team has forgotten about the state that offers just four electoral votes and has backed the winner in four of the last five general elections.

Surrogates have been spreading Obama's message. They include top political adviser David Axelrod, who addressed students in Manchester in late September, and Vice President Joe Biden, who has visited twice since then.

The campaign also has been ramping up its operations.

Spokesman Frank Benenati said more than 1,000 political events, including phone banks and voter registration drives, have been held since April. Supporters recently held 18 house parties across the state in one day. The campaign has an office in Manchester and will soon open another in Portsmouth.

Sky+ app gets Series Links just in time for them to become irrelevent

Demanding American consumers make sure that if a DVR app doesn't ship with global Spotify support or HDD-managment capabilities, it's kicked to the kerb. Demure UK consumers command less respect -- we're happy if our software does anything useful at all. That's why Sky hasn't rushed in updating its Sky+ app for iOS and Android, but in December it'll finally enable users to add Series Links (like Season Passes, only shorter and with fewer filler episodes) at the push of a touchscreen. Sadly you don't get the option to stream from your home box, so don't uninstall that Sky Go app if you're looking for a profanity-laden dose of Deadwood at the grocery store.

Children have expensive taste: iPad tops kids? holiday wish lists (Yahoo! News)

Apple's tablet is a top request from kids of all ages

Apple's iPad is one of the?top-selling gadgets of all time, so it should come as no surprise that it tops many wish lists this holiday season. But what may surprise you when it comes to those hoping to see an Apple tablet under the tree this year is just how young they skew. According to a?new report from the Nielsen group, a whopping 44% of?kids between the ages of 6 and 12 are interested in getting an iPad within the next 6 months, making it the most desired gadget amongst that age group.

Last year's study showed that 31% of kids were wishing for the?iPad. The huge jump in interest could be due to effective marketing campaigns, or simply that more children in that age group have had a chance to go hands-on with one in the past year. Other Apple products are enjoying similar buzz with youngsters, with 30% of kids wanting an iPod Touch, and 27% intent on?getting an iPhone. Further down the list are more common wish list items like game consoles and desktop computers.

Kids in the 13-17 age group are similarly excited about Apple's products, with the iPad still coming out on top with 24% purchase intent. The iPhone shows up a bit further down the list with 15%, being beaten out by the likes of televisions, blu-ray players, and e-readers. So if you're still looking for the perfect gift for a kid on your shopping list ? and you're feeling particularly generous this year ? an iPad just might make their day.

Can 'lone wolf' terror suspect claim entrapment? It will be hard to prove.

The FBI reportedly decided that Jose Pimentel, the 'lone wolf' terror suspect arrested by the NYPD, was not a credible threat. But translating that into an entrapment defense will not be easy, experts say.?

According to the New York Police Department, Jose Pimentel was a ?lone wolf? terrorist intent on bombing Post Offices and banks and assassinating US soldiers coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan. And, when he was arrested last Saturday night, the police say he was within an hour of having a working bomb.

So, why did the Federal Bureau of Investigation decide Mr. Pimentel was not a credible threat, according to various press reports, and will that make any difference if his case goes to trial?

According to criminal defense attorneys and others not involved with the case, Mr. Pimentel, who has pleaded not guilty, will have a hard time trying to find a way to mount a defense based on the fact the FBI was not involved.

And, say lawyers who follow terrorism cases, it will be difficult ? though not impossible ? to mount a case that Mr. Pimentel was entrapped by the government.

?More and more we are seeing the defense claim entrapment,? says Karen Greenberg, director of the Center on National Security at Fordham Law School in New York, referring to recent terrorism cases.? ?But, it is very rare for them to take it to court.?

The reason it?s so hard for defendants to mount an entrapment defense is because the burden of proof shifts from the prosecutor to the defense, she says.

?In a normal trial, the prosecutor ? the government ? has to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt to the jury,? explains Ms. Greenberg. ?In an entrapment case the defense has to prove entrapment, versus poking holes in the government?s case, and that?s a very hard defense to mount.?

From the documents, there is no doubt the district attorney will be counting on a ?confidential informant? who was deeply involved with Pimentel, aka Muhammad Yusuf. So far that individual has remained anonymous.

?These conversations, most of which were audio recorded, involved the defendant discussing his plans with a confidential informant under the control of the NYPD,? said Detective Robert Roloph, in court documents.

According to the complaint, the NYPD also recorded phone calls, videotaped efforts to make bombs, and read blogs and postings by the defendant, who had established a website, www.trueislam1.com. On the site, according to the filings, was a link to an article entitled, ?Make a Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Home.?

Terrorism experts say those Internet postings may make it difficult for his defense.

?He left?muddy footprints on the Internet. He made his intentions clear,? says Frank Cilluffo, director of the Homeland Security Policy Institute at George Washington University in Washington. ?His intent was to cause harm.?

Herman Cain Fights Back Tears At Thanksgiving Family Forum

During Saturday night's Thanksgiving Family Forum, GOP contender Herman Cain choked up as he talked about a health crisis from his past.

Debate moderator Frank Luntz asked the candidates to describe a personal challenge they had endured, and Cain related the story of finding out that he had stage 4 colon cancer in 2006.

The Des Moines Register transcribed the exchange:

?I will never forget,? Cain began, ?walking out of that surgeons office after she had just told us stage four ??

And then Cain paused. His eyes began to water.

Moderator Frank Luntz interjected: ?Take your time.?

?It?s as bad as it gets,? Cain continued. ?I will never forget before my wife and I were about to get in the car I said, I can do this??

Cain paused again. The audience remained silent.

?She said, ?We,? ? Cain finished.

Cain?s hands covered his face. The audience erupted in applause. As Texas Gov. Rick Perry fielded the next question, Cain removed his glasses and continually cleared his eyes with a handkerchief.

Cain also fought back tears when he spoke about how he had not spent enough time with his children.

It was the second time in two days that Cain's emotions showed through. On Friday, he choked up while talking about his wife to an ABC affiliate in New Hampshire.

But as The Los Angeles Times reports, Cain was in good company on Saturday night. Both Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich also fought back tears during the GOP forum ? Santorum while talking about not loving his disabled daughter enough, so that he would not be devastated if she died, and Gingrich while describing a family friend's son who underwent surgery for a series of brain tumors.

Tender Breasts From Combo HRT Linked to Higher Cancer Risk (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Nov. 18 (HealthDay News) -- Women who develop breast tenderness after starting combination estrogen and progestin menopause therapy have a 33 percent higher risk of developing breast cancer than those who don't experience breast tenderness, a new study says.

It also found that new-onset breast tenderness was not associated with increased breast cancer risk among women taking estrogen alone.

The findings, based on an analysis of data from more than 16,600 women on the combination therapy and nearly 10,750 taking estrogen alone, appear in the Nov. 17 online edition of the journal Breast Cancer Research and Treatment.

"This study showed that developing new breast tenderness after the start of hormone therapy was associated with increased breast cancer risk only in women on the combination estrogen plus progestin therapy, not estrogen therapy alone," study first author Dr. Carolyn Crandall, a professor of general internal medicine and a scientist with the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, said in a UCLA news release.

However, the association between breast tenderness and increased cancer risk does not mean that there is a cause-and-effect relationship.

A study published last month by Crandall found that new-onset breast tenderness was much more pronounced in women receiving the combination therapy than in those receiving estrogen alone. The association between new-onset breast tenderness and breast-density changes was also more pronounced in women receiving the combination therapy.

"The consistent theme we've run across throughout these studies is that estrogen and progestin compared to estrogen alone have a more marked effect on breast tissue," Crandall said. "One theory is that there may be more growth of breast tissue, making the breasts more dense, when women take the combination therapy."

Higher breast density is linked with a higher risk of breast cancer.

Crandall stressed that women taking hormone therapy have only a slight risk of developing breast cancer overall.

"We don't want to incite panic, because breast cancer is rare in women taking hormone therapy, but the point is that women are terrified of getting breast cancer as a result of menopausal hormone therapy," Crandall said.

"Where I think this (new) study would be important is for women already on either combination hormone therapy or estrogen alone," Crandall added. "If they do develop breast tenderness, it would be good for them to know the results of this study and to consider discussing them with their physician."

Women on hormone therapy who develop new-onset breast tenderness should be sure to get their regular clinical breast exams and mammograms, Crandall advised.

RNC surpasses DNC in October fundraising (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Republican National Committee raised $8.5 million in October as it gears up for a challenge to President Barack Obama next year.

The RNC raised slightly more during the month than the Democratic National Committee, which collected $7.9 million. The RNC ended October with $13.5 million in the bank, while the DNC's cash on hand fell to $11.1 million.

RNC officials said the party's debt was $13.9 million. That's down from $24 million when RNC Chairman Reince Priebus (ryns PREE'-bus) took over the committee. The DNC had debts of $9 million.

The DNC fundraising included $2 million for the Obama Victory Fund, a joint fundraising account by the DNC and Obama's e-election campaign.

Another rhino species gone, one in four mammal species at risk, report finds

The Western black rhino is now extinct, and a quarter of other mammal species are at risk of extinction, according to an assessment of more than 60,000 plant and animal species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. ?

About one in four mammal species are at risk of extinction, and the Western black rhino has officially been declared extinct, according to a new assessment of biodiversity by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and partners.

For the latest update, researchers assessed the status of 61,900 species of plants and animals.

The reassessments of several rhinoceros species show that the subspecies of the subspecies of the white rhino in central Africa ? called the Northern white rhino (Ceratotherium simum cottoni) ? is currently teetering on the brink of extinction and has been listed as "Possibly Extinct in the Wild." A subspecies of Javan rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus annasmiticus) is probably extinct, following the poaching of what is thought to be?the last animal in Vietnam?in 2010. While this doesn't mean the end of the?Javan rhino, it reduces the species to a single, declining population on the island of Java.

The assessment also showed an alarming 40 percent of Madagascar's terrestrial reptiles are threatened. The 22 Madagascan species currently identified as critically endangered, which include chameleons, geckoes, skinks and snakes, are now a conservation challenge, researchers say. New conservation areas being designated in Madagascar are expected to help conserve a significant proportion of these critically endangered species, such as Tarzan's chameleon (Calumma tarzan), the bizarre-nosed chameleon (Calumma hafahafa) and the limbless skink (Paracontias fasika). [Photos of IUCN wildlife]

Other findings include:

  • A manta ray once thought to be a single species is actually two species: the reef manta ray (Manta alfredi) and the giant manta ray (Manta birostris), both of which are now classified as vulnerable. Considered the largest living ray, the giant manta ray can grow to more than 23 feet (7 meters) across.
  • Twenty-six?recently discovered amphibians?have been added to the IUCN Red List, including: the blessed poison frog (Ranitomeya benedicta), which is currently listed as vulnerable; and the summers' poison frog (Ranitomeya summersi), which is now listed as endangered.
  • Plants are still underrepresented on the IUCN Red List, researchers report. Current work underway to increase knowledge includes a review of all conifers, with results showing the Chinese water fir (Glyptostrobus pensilis), for example, has moved from endangered status to critically endangered status; the primary cause is habitat loss as agriculture expands.

"The IUCN Red List is critical as an indicator of the health of biodiversity, in identifying conservation needs and informing necessary changes in policy and legislation to drive conservation forward," Jean-Christophe Vi?, deputy director of IUCN's Global Species Program, said in a statement. "The world is full of marvelous species that are rapidly moving towards becoming things of myth and legend if conservation efforts are not more successfully implemented."
