When green means danger: A stunning new species of palm-pitviper from Honduras

Wednesday, May 15, 2013

A new species of green palm-pitviper of the genus Bothriechis is described from a seriously threatened cloud forest reserve in northern Honduras. Because of similarity in color pattern and scalation, the new species (Bothriechis guifarroi) was previously confused with other Honduran palm pitvipers. Genetic analysis revealed that the closest relatives of the new species are actually found over 600 km to the south, in the mountains of Costa Rica. The study was published in the open access journal Zookeys.

The gorgeous new species was discovered by scientists during two expeditions in 2010 aimed at studying the fauna of Texiguat Wildlife Refuge, one of the most endemism-rich and diverse highland forests in Mesoamerica. This beautiful, but highly toxic, snake represents the 15th endemic species occurring in the region. Texiguat Wildlife Refuge was created in 1987 to protect populations of wildlife such as the famous but elusive jaguar and Central America tapir, as well as howler and white-faced monkeys, sloths, and a variety of endemic amphibians, reptiles, and plants.

To draw attention to the dedication and sacrifice of many grassroots conservationists in Honduras and Central America, the new species was named in honor of Mario Guifarro of Olancho. Guifarro was a former hunter and gold miner who became an outspoken conservationist when he saw the vast rainforests of eastern Honduras being destroyed and converted to cattle ranches. After years of threats and multiple attempts on his life, Guifarro was ambushed and murdered on 15 September 2007 while on a mission to delimit a biosphere reserve for the indigenous Tawahka.

The lead author of the study Dr Josiah Townsend, Department of Biology, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, comments on the importance of the discovery and conservation status of the new species: "The description of Bothriechis guifarroi has important implications for Central American biogeography as well as conservation. We recommend that B. guifarroi be immediately classified as Critically Endangered due to its limited known area of occurrence and the potential for anthropogenic damage to its habitat. We also consider that this species warrants immediate consideration for protection under CITES, given its striking appearance and high potential for exploitation in the pet trade."

Engineers monitor heart health using paper-thin flexible 'skin'

May 16, 2013 ? Most of us don't ponder our pulses outside of the gym. But doctors use the human pulse as a diagnostic tool to monitor heart health.

Zhenan Bao, a professor of chemical engineering at Stanford, has developed a heart monitor thinner than a dollar bill and no wider than a postage stamp. The flexible skin-like monitor, worn under an adhesive bandage on the wrist, is sensitive enough to help doctors detect stiff arteries and cardiovascular problems.

The devices could one day be used to continuously track heart health and provide doctors a safer method of measuring a key vital sign for newborn and other high-risk surgery patients.

"The pulse is related to the condition of the artery and the condition of the heart," said Bao, whose lab develops artificial skin-like materials. "The better the sensor, the better doctors can catch problems before they develop."

Your pulse

To find your pulse, press your index and middle finger into the underside of your opposite wrist. You should feel the steady rhythm of your heart as it pumps blood through your veins.

Each beat you feel is actually made up of two distinct peaks, even though you can't tell them apart with just your fingers. The first, larger peak is from your heart pumping out blood. Shortly after a heartbeat, your lower body sends a reflecting wave back to your artery system, creating a smaller second peak.

The relative sizes of these two peaks can be used by medical experts to measure your heart's health.

"You can use the ratio of the two peaks to determine the stiffness of the artery, for example," said Gregor Schwartz, a post-doctoral fellow and a physicist for the project. "If there is a change in the heart's condition, the wave pattern will change. Fortunately, when I tested this on myself, my heart looked fine."

To make the heart monitor both sensitive and small, Bao's team uses a thin middle layer of rubber covered with tiny pyramid bumps. Each mold-made pyramid is only a few microns across -- smaller than a human red blood cell.

When pressure is put on the device, the pyramids deform slightly, changing the size of the gap between the two halves of the device. This change in separation causes a measurable change in the electromagnetic field and the current flow in the device.

The more pressure placed on the monitor, the more the pyramids deform and the larger the change in the electromagnetic field. Using many of these sensors on a prosthetic limb could act like an electronic skin, creating an artificial sense of touch.

When the sensor is placed on someone's wrist using an adhesive bandage, the sensor can measure that person's pulse wave as it reverberates through the body.

The device is so sensitive that it can detect more than just the two peaks of a pulse wave. When engineers looked at the wave drawn by their device, they noticed small bumps in the tail of the pulse wave invisible to conventional sensors. Bao said she believes these fluctuations could potentially be used for more detailed diagnostics in the future.

Blood pressure and babies

Doctors already use similar, albeit much bulkier, sensors to keep track of a patient's heart health during surgery or when taking a new medication. But in the future Bao's device could help keep track of another vital sign.

"In theory, this kind of sensor can be used to measure blood pressure," said Schwartz. "Once you have it calibrated, you can use the signal of your pulse to calculate your blood pressure."

This non-invasive method of monitoring heart health could replace devices inserted directly into an artery, called intravascular catheters. These catheters create a high risk of infection, making them impractical for newborns and high-risk patients. Thus, an external monitor like Bao's could provide doctors a safer way to gather information about the heart, especially during infant surgeries.

Bao's team is working with other Stanford researchers to make the device completely wireless. Using wireless communication, doctors could receive a patient's minute-by-minute heart status via cell phone, all thanks to a device as thick as a human hair.

"For some patients with a potential heart disease, wearing a bandage would allow them to constantly measure their heart's condition," Bao said. "This could be done without interfering with their daily life at all, since it really just requires wearing a small bandage."

The team published its work in the May 12 edition of Nature Communications. The team's research is supported by funding from the National Science Foundation and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.

House panel to hold second hearing on IRS controversy

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A second House of Representatives committee announced on Wednesday it will hold a hearing on the Internal Revenue Service's targeting of conservative groups for extra tax scrutiny.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee will hold a hearing on May 22, an aide to Representative Darrell Issa, the Republican committee chairman, said.

Deputy Treasury Secretary Neil Wolin; former IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman; Lois Lerner, chief of the IRS tax exempt unit; and Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration J. Russell George are being asked to testify.

On Friday, a separate House committee will hold the first hearing on the matter since it erupted last week. George and acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller will testify there.

Nvidia's portable gaming console Shield will hit retail in June for ...

Nvidia's new mobile gaming console, "Shield," will hit the shelves next month with a hefty starting price tag of $349.

The portable gaming console formerly known as "Project Shield" will arrive at select online and brick-and-mortar retailers next month, developer Nvidia announced Tuesday.

Nvidia first unveiled its mobile gaming device in a surprise move at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) under the comic book-like moniker "Project Shield." Now known simply as "Shield," the new Android-powered mobile gaming device and the first to be produced by a company best known for its line of graphics processing units (GPUs) and mobile processors will debut for $349 ? a high price point for a fading part of the market for gaming hardware.

Units will begin shipping to select stores including GameStop, Newegg, Micro Center, and Canada Computers in June, Nvidia said in blog post Prospective fans can begin pre-ordering the device on May 20, though anyone who previously signed up for the device's newsletter through Nvidia's website can begin pre-ordering the device immediately.

A major challenge that any mobile console developer faces is in securing enough quality software to make the device worth it. Seeing as Shield will enter the market at more than twice the price of the current market leader, Nintendo's 3DS, and without the proprietary Mario and Donkey Kong games that make its competitor such a unique product, this is a particularly pressing dilemma for Nvidia to resolve.

Given the relative openness of Google's Play store, the company may have found its savior in the Android operating system ? though, like PowerA's Moga controller or PlayJam's GameStick, the Shield console would still need to optimize Android games to the new hardware to make spending the extra cash actually worth it for customers.

Nvidia said that in addition to an unspecified number of Google Play store games and apps that will be compatible with the device, the Shield will come with two games, "Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2," an "Expendable: Rearmed." The company also said that it has entered into partnerships for five additional games ? "Costume Quest" and "Broken Age" from Kickstarter wunderkind Double Fine, "Flyhunter: Origins" from Steel Wool Games, "Skiing Fred" from Dedalord Games and "Chuck's Challenge" from Niffler.

Latvian Environment Minister does not back down; waits for ...

Edmunds Sprudzs

Edmunds Sprudzs

Development of amendments to the law in order to limit the authority of criminally prosecuted deputies is a good sign for potential public servants to think more about being honest, believes Environmental Protection and Regional Development Minister Edmunds Sprudzs.

In his interview to 900 seconds programme of LNT, he denied the claim that he is trying to influence political forces in such a way. He emphasized that his goal is to influence only criminally prosecuted deputies who interrupt the normal work of municipalities.

At the same time, Sprudzs admits that he has no rights to ?run and hide?. He also said it is too soon to talk about his resignation as long as this question remains unresolved in the Saeima. The minister said this project is very important to him.

Reform Party?s Saeima faction?s Chairman Edmunds Demiters said: ?According to what representatives of coalition parties publicly said during today?s Coalition Parties Cooperation Council, not one of them is against the limitation of the authority of criminally prosecuted deputies. This is why the actions of the National Alliance ? not voting in favour of the proposed amendments ? seem odd?.

Representatives of the coalition promised to find a solution to this matter. On Monday, after the Coalition Cooperation Council meeting, Saeima Chairwoman and Unity leader Solvita Aboltina told the journalists: and agreement is reached to have the bill forwarded for further review.

She also added that changes to the law cannot be created in order to solve some specific situation. They need to be universal; ones that would support any political situation, LETA reports.

Coalition partners will be submitting proposals for the third reading of amendments to the Law on the Status of the Deputy of the Republic City Council and Municipality Council. According to her, a solution that will satisfy the entirety of the ruling coalition will be found.

As it is known opposition parties had made sure that deputies accused of serious crimes would continue to remain in their posts. In spite of the fact that the vote took place on ?an emotionally sensitive? date ? May 9 ? representatives of Harmony Centre, Union of Greens and Farmers and the National Alliance had managed to go through this issue without conflicts.

This initiative was supported by 38 parliamentarians, 41 voted against, five abstained from the vote.

Proposals were not supported by deputies of parties of the opposition ? Harmony Centre (HC), Union of Greens and Farmers (UGF), as well as some deputies of the coalition ? Janis Dombrava (National Alliance), Raivis Dzintars (National Alliance) and some others.

The proposal of the commission that developed the amendments to the Law On the Status of the Deputy of the Republic City Council and Municipality Council provided the following: if criminal proceedings are initiated against an official for committing serious crimes, the official loses the right to participate in municipal, commission and committee meetings.

It is also provided that these limitations will remain in power until criminal proceedings have ended. It is planned to have the official be paid only part of his usual salary during this period. This initiative caused wide discussions in the parliament. It was positively viewed and proposed to be supported by coalition officials, while opposition and some of the National Alliance members criticized it.

According to Raivis Dzintars of the National Alliance, people?s lives should not be put into question only to hurt Aivars Lembergs a little.

Unity deputy Lolita Cigane emphasized that this bill is not being pushed because of one or a group of deputies ? it is meant to apply to all municipal deputies. ?Those who claim this bill is meant to be used against specific people, in reality lobby the interests of those people. They do not think about benefiting society?, ? she says.

Not all cytokine-producing cells start out the same way

May 13, 2013 ? Cytokines are molecules produced by immune cells that induce the migration of other cells to sites of infection or injury, promote the production of anti-microbial agents, and signal the production of inflammatory mediators. These events are important for fighting infections. However, sometimes this process goes unchecked, resulting in unwanted inflammation that can damage tissues and organs.

Interleukin 17, or IL17, is a well-studied cytokine that regulates immune function at mucosal surfaces in the body but is dysregulated in many diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriasis.

Not all IL17-producing cells are the same, and the rules regarding how particular cell types are instructed to produce this important mediator differ. Research published this week in Nature Immunology, from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania by Gary Koretzky, MD, PhD, the Francis C. Wood professor of Medicine and Investigator in the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute; Martha Jordan, PhD, research assistant professor in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Jiyeon Kim, an MD-PhD student in the Koretzky lab, and other members of the Perelman School community including Morris Birnbaum, MD, PhD from the Department of Medicine and scientists in the laboratory of Celeste Simon, PhD, from the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute and the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology, sheds light on the intricacies of those instructions.

T-helper cells that are present in peripheral tissues are known to be a prominent source of IL17. These cells interact with microbial organisms, in particular in the gastrointestinal tract, and are instructed or "induced" to produce and secrete IL17. These inducible, T-helper, IL17-producing cells are found predominantly at mucosal sites and are important for maintaining the health of these tissues.

"Natural" IL17-producing cells, on the other hand, do not have to interact with microorganisms to become capable of making this important cytokine. What these natural IL17-producing T cells do and how they are instructed to produce IL17 has become a research focus for Jordan and Koretzky.

"Although we know much less about natural IL17-producing cells, previous work from our laboratory demonstrated that these cells obtain their ability to produce this cytokine as they develop in the thymus," says Koretzky. "The current study in Nature Immunology compares the signals used by inducible versus natural IL-17 cells that are necessary for cytokine production, testing the hypothesis that they are distinct populations of cells. This may one day help us to develop tools to manipulate one cell population while leaving the other untouched."

The team found evidence that the inducible versus natural cells do, in fact, have very different characteristics. Although the kinase Akt plays a critical role in regulating cytokine production by both cell types, how these cell types use Akt differs. For example, mTORC1, a protein complex activated by Akt, is critical for the generation of inducible IL17-producing cells in the gut; however, natural IL17 cells develop independently of mTORC1. This finding suggests that the trigger for the development of inducible versus natural IL17-producing cells is different. To probe this finding further, Koretzky and Jordan focused attention on different forms of Akt.

Previous work by many laboratories defined different subtypes of Akt, and emerging data suggest that these forms may have differential functions in various tissues.

This finding was extended to inducible and natural IL17-producing T cells in the current Nature Immunology publication, as the team found that one particular form of Akt -- Akt2 -- is necessary for optimal inducible cell development but dispensable for natural IL17-producing cells. The findings show how a previously unknown role of Akt and its partner molecules shapes the maturation of IL17-producing cells.

Understanding the rules that govern IL17 cell development and function will suggest ways to specifically modulate one population or the other, which may be important during IL17-mediated immune responses, especially when that response spins out of control.

This work was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health (R01 DK56886, 5K01AR52802, R37GM053256) and the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute.

Markets subdued as investors pause for breath

LONDON (AP) ? Financial markets remained subdued Tuesday as investors assessed whether the recent optimism that has seen many stock indexes hit historic highs will last.

Given a dearth of market-moving news, investors remained on the sidelines, awaiting more significant economic reports from the world's leading economies.

Over the past few weeks, stock investors, in particular, have been gripped by a wave of optimism over a range of issues, including the prospects for the U.S. economy.

However, those hopes over the world's biggest economy are beginning to stoke talk that the U.S. Federal Reserve may soon start to rein in its monetary stimulus. Investors want to hear more on that as much of the recovery in stocks over the past few years has been based on cheap and easy money from the world's major central banks, most recently from Japan's.

Waning fears over Europe's debt crisis and the bold attempt by Japan's monetary authorities to shake off a two-decade economic stagnation have also lain behind the positive mood in 2013.

"With another relatively quiet day for fundamentals, it's increasingly easy to side with those suggesting that the market is due a pause for breath, or even a small correction," said Fawad Razaqzada, market strategist at GFT Markets.

In Europe, the mood was little changed by a surprisingly big 1 percent rise in industrial production among the 17 European Union countries that use the euro. The figure raised some expectations that the recession in the eurozone may have ended. The first estimate of the region's gross domestic product in the first three months is due for release Wednesday.

Germany's DAX fell 0.1 percent to 8,271 while the CAC-40 in France was 0.4 percent lower at 3,931. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was down 0.1 percent to 6,623

Wall Street was poised for an unspectacular opening, with both Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures down 0.2 percent. On Monday, the S&P struck another record high.

Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.2 percent to close at 14,758.42 ? a modest retreat following two spectacular sessions that have seen the index rise to five-year highs.

The index has soared more than 42 percent since the beginning of the year as the yen dropped sharply in response to the Bank of Japan's aggressive monetary stimulus program.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, elected late last year on promises to revive the world's third-largest economy, has implemented a policy mix of increased public spending and aggressive monetary easing to end the country's two decades of economic stagnation.

On Tuesday, the dollar was 0.1 percent lower against the Japanese yen, at 101.67 yen. It was also largely unchanged against the euro, which was trading 0.1 percent lower at $1.2979.

Elsewhere in Asia, South Korea's Kospi added 1 percent to 1,968.83 while Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.3 percent at 22,930.28. In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite Index fell 1.1 percent to 2,217.01. The Shenzhen Composite Index fell 1.4 percent 960.81.

Oil prices were little changed, with the benchmark New York rate 5 cents higher at $95.22 a barrel.

Tiger Woods Edges Sergio Garcia At Players Championship 2013 With Strong Finish

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- One bad tee shot made Tiger Woods appear vulnerable. One clutch par putt and a critical birdie made him look invincible.

Woods closed out The Players Championship on Sunday like he has so many other tournaments: hitting big shot after big shot down the stretch.

His latest unflappable finish helped him secure his fourth victory of 2013 and capture the richest prize on the PGA Tour for the first time in a dozen years.

"I know a lot of people ... thought I was done," said Woods, who has never won four times this early in a season. "But I'm not."

This one had to be special. Not only did he win on Mother's Day for the second time in his career with girlfriend and Olympic ski champion Lindsey Vonn in attendance, but Woods also won the final showdown against Sergio Garcia after a weekend filled with tense stares and sharp words.

Woods and Garcia were tied for the lead with two holes to play before heading in opposite directions. Woods kept his shots on land and made two pars. Garcia hit three balls into the water for a quadruple bogey-double bogey finish.

If there was any satisfaction in beating Garcia again, Woods kept that to himself.

"We just go out there and play," said Woods, who earned $1.71 million and pushed his season total to over $5.8 million in just seven tournaments. "I had an opportunity to win the golf tournament when I was tied for the lead today, and I thought I handled the situation well and really played well today when I really needed to. And that's something I'm excited about."

Woods allowed the final hour to turn into a tense duel by hooking his tee shot into the water on the par-4 14th hole for double bogey. But his short game bailed him out to save par on the 15th and make a sand-save birdie on the 16th. He was solid on the final two holes for a 2-under 70.

"The shot that turned the tide was the putt on 15," Woods said. "To go double bogey-bogey would have been huge. But to save a putt there and get some momentum going to the next three holes was big."

Garcia's finish was messy.

The Spaniard was standing at the 17th tee, staring across to the island green as Woods made his par. He took aim at the flag with his wedge and hung his head when he saw the ball splash short of the green. Then, Garcia hit another one in the water on his way to a quadruple-bogey 7. The meltdown was complete when Garcia hit his tee shot into the water on the 18th.

"It's always nice to have a chance at beating the No. 1 player in the world, but unfortunately for me, I wasn't able to this week," Garcia said.

Woods was in the scoring trailer when Swedish rookie David Lingmerth missed a long birdie putt that would have forced a playoff. It raced by the cup, and Lingmerth three-putted for bogey.

Woods finished on 13-under 275.

He won The Players for the first time since 2001 and became the fifth multiple winner at TPC Sawgrass since The Players moved to this former swamp in 1982. It was his 78th career win on the PGA Tour, four short of the record held by Sam Snead.

Lingmerth closed with a 72 and finished two shots behind, along with Kevin Streelman (67) and Jeff Maggert, who also was tied for the lead until finding the water on the 17th to make double bogey. The 49-year-old Maggert birdied the 18th for a 70.

Garcia took 13 shots to cover the final two holes ? 6 over par ? and tumbled into a tie for eighth.

Given their public sniping, it was only fitting that Garcia had the best chance to beat Woods.

Their dispute started Saturday when Garcia complained that his shot from the par-5 second fairway was disrupted by cheers from the crowd around Woods, who was some 50 yards away in the trees and fired them up by taking a fairway metal out of his bag. He said Woods should have been paying attention, and it became a war of the words the next two days.

"Not real surprising that he's complaining about something," Woods said.

"At least I'm true to myself," Garcia retorted. "I know what I'm doing, and he can do whatever he wants."

Woods and Garcia played four tension-free holes to complete the third round Sunday morning, and they shook hands without words when they finished ? Woods with a 71, Garcia with a 72 to share the 54-hole lead with Lingmerth.

Afterward, Garcia kept at it, saying Woods is "not the nicest guy on tour."

Woods had the last laugh ? along with the Players trophy. He improved to 53-4 in his PGA Tour career when he has at least a share of the lead going into the final round.

Garcia, when asked if he would have changed anything about the flap with Woods, replied, "It sounds like I was the bad guy here. I was the victim. I don't have any regrets of anything."

The real villain was the tricky island green.

It was at the 17th hole where Garcia won The Players in 2008 when Paul Goydos hit into the water in a sudden-death playoff. This time, the island green got its revenge. Garcia hit a wedge and felt he caught it just a little bit thin, which is usually all it takes.

"That hole has been good to me for the most part," Garcia said. "Today, it wasn't. That's the way it is. That's the kind of hole it is. You've got to love it for what it is."

Quotebox - Both sides of debate react to abortion doctor verdict

(Reuters) - A Philadelphia doctor was found guilty on Monday of murdering three babies during abortions at a clinic serving low-income women in a case that cast a national spotlight on the controversial practice of late-term abortions.

Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 72, faces the possibility of the death penalty for his actions at the now-shuttered Women's Medical Society Clinic.

The Philadelphia abortion clinic that prosecutors called a "house of horrors" has been cited as powerful evidence by both abortion rights and anti-abortion groups. The following are reactions to the verdict:

Anti-abortion advocates

Frank Pavone, director, Priests for Life: "The guilty verdict on charges of killing babies following abortion shows that the law recognizes a point at which the 'right to choose' must yield to the right to life, and also shows that abortionists don't know where that point is. Such laws must be strengthened in every state."

Ashley McGuire, senior fellow, The Catholic Association: "Gosnell is not an aberration within the abortion industry. We call on Congress to investigate all abortion centers and protect the weakest and most vulnerable among us."

Dana Cody, executive director, Life Legal Defense Foundation: "Hopefully this is the first step in seeing prosecutors, nationwide, take legal action when children born alive after surviving abortion are murdered. After all, Gosnell is not the exception, his clinic is the rule; abortion is murder inside and outside the womb. We are also hopeful that now government agencies will better scrutinize abortion clinics and shut down more of them before more women are killed and babies murdered."

Abortion rights groups

Ilyse Hogue, president, NARAL Pro-Choice America: "Justice was served to Kermit Gosnell today and he will pay the price for the atrocities he committed. We hope that the lessons of the trial do not fade with the verdict. Anti-choice politicians, and their unrelenting efforts to deny women access to safe and legal abortion care, will only drive more women to back-alley butchers like Kermit Gosnell."

Eric Ferrero, vice president for communications, Planned Parenthood Federation of America: "This case has made clear that we must have and enforce laws that protect access to safe and legal abortion, and we must reject misguided laws that would limit women's options and force them to seek treatment from criminals like Kermit Gosnell."

Dr. Nancy Stanwood, board chair-elect, Physicians for Reproductive Health: "As doctors who have women's health at the forefront of our mission and our practices, we are relieved that Kermit Gosnell will no longer be able to take advantage of vulnerable women. In Pennsylvania and many other states with restrictive laws, women face incredible barriers that affect their ability to obtain quality care. Gosnell preyed on low-income women who had few options to obtain the care they needed. His practice was illegal, unethical, and unsafe."

(AP) ? Grammy-winning musician Chris Brown's neighbors are unhappy with what some are calling frightening art he's chosen to have painted along the curb of his Hollywood Hills home.

A neighborhood group said the grimacing, sharp-toothed, red-eyed goblins painted along a retaining wall have been scaring local children, and is an eyesore to boot, the Los Angeles Times reported (http://lat.ms/19cjOBY ).

"There are lots of babies, lots of children, and they're literally frightened. It's like devils on the wall ? big scary eyes and big scary teeth, and just the whole vibe is not what we're used to," Patti Negri, president of the Hollywood Dell Civic Association, told the newspaper.

L.A. city code officials responded to complaints about the monster art and cited the "Run It!" singer $376 for unpermitted and excessive signage.

Under city ordinances, it's illegal to create murals on most private properties. Though that didn't stop Madonna from painting her Hollywood Hills home in red and yellow stripes in the 1990s.

Brown has been ordered to remove the goblin paintings within 30 days, but his attorney Mark Geragos said the musician is not backing down.

"They are trying to suspend the First Amendment," Geragos said.

Geragos alleges neighbors are harassing Brown, and have also made parking complaints about him and called animal control.

In a telephone interview with The Associated Press Saturday, Negri said all she wants is for Brown to "tone it down and be a better neighbor."

Brown's tumultuous relationship with singer Rihanna and foul-mouthed Twitter presence have given him a bad boy reputation.

Brown won a Grammy in 2011 for Best R&B Album with "F.A.M.E." and was arrested shortly after the 2009 awards ceremony for assaulting Rihanna.

"I know a $300 fine is probably pocket change. But hopefully and maybe, he'll just see the light and decide to be a good neighbor," Negri told the Times. "We're happy to have him ? if he just tones it down."

Four new genetic risk factors for testicular cancer identified

May 12, 2013 ? A new study looking at the genomes of more than 13,000 men identified four new genetic variants associated with an increased risk of testicular cancer, the most commonly diagnosed type in young men today. The findings from this first-of-its-kind meta-analysis were reported online May 12 in Nature Genetics by researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

The discovery of these genetic variations -- chromosomal "typos," so to speak -- could ultimately help researchers better understand which men are at high risk and allow for early detection or prevention of the disease.

"As we continue to cast a wider net, we identify additional genetic risk factors, which point to new mechanisms for disease," said Katherine L. Nathanson, MD, associate professor in the division of Translational Medicine and Human Genetics within the department of Medicine. "Certain chromosomal regions, what we call loci, are tied into testicular cancer susceptibility, and represent a promising path to stratifying patients into risk groups -- for a disease we know is highly heritable."

Tapping into three genome-wide association studies (GWAS), the researchers, including Peter A. Kanetsky, PhD, MPH, an associate professor in the department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, analyzed 931 affected individuals and 1,975 controls and confirmed the results in an additional 3,211 men with cancer and 7,591 controls. The meta-analysis revealed that testicular germ cell tumor (TGCT) risk was significantly associated with markers at four loci -- 4q22, 7q22, 16q22.3, and 17q22, none of which have been identified in other cancers. Additionally, these loci pose a higher risk than the vast majority of other loci identified for some common cancers, such as breast and prostate.

This brings the number of genomic regions associated with testicular cancer up to 17 -- including eight new ones reported in another study in this issue of Nature Genetics.

Testicular cancer is relatively rare; however, incidence rates have doubled in the past 40 years. It is also highly heritable. If a man has a father or son with testicular cancer, he has a four-to six-fold higher risk of developing it compared to a man with no family history. That increases to an eight-to 10-fold higher risk if the man has a brother with testicular cancer.

Given this, researchers continue to investigate genetic variants and their association with cancer.

In 2009, Dr. Nathanson and colleagues uncovered variation around two genes -- KITLG and SPRY4 -- found to be associated with an increased risk of testicular cancer. The two variants were the first striking genetic risk factors found for this disease at the time. Since then, several more variants have been discovered, but only through single GWAS studies.

"This analysis is the first to bring several groups of data together to identify loci associated with disease," said Dr. Nathanson, "and represent the power of combining multiple GWAS to better identify genetic risk factors that failed to reach genome-wide significance in single studies."

The team also explains how the variants associated with increased cancer risk are the same genes associated with chromosomal segregation. The variants are also found near genes important for germ cell development. These data strongly supports the notion that testicular cancer is a disorder of germ cell development and maturation.

"TGCT is unique in that many of the loci are very good biological candidates due to their role in male germ cell development," said Dr. Nathanson. "Disruptions in male germ cell development lead to tumorigenesis, and presumably also to infertility. These conditions have been linked before, epidemiologically, and genes implicated in both of our prior studies, but this study reinforces that connection."

This study was supported in part by Intramural Research Program of the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health grant (R01CA114478).

Russia points to discord over proposed Syria peace process

MADRID (Reuters) - Spanish MotoGP rider Hector Barbera and his girlfriend were charged on Friday following a domestic dispute, court sources said after a hearing in Jerez. The 26-year-old FTR Moto rider was ordered to do community service while the girlfriend, who was not identified by name, had her sentence suspended because she had no previous convictions, according to the sources. "I would like to make clear that it was nothing more than a domestic argument which has already been resolved by the court in Jerez and which both parties have accepted," Barbera said in a later statement. ...

Nokia announces the Lumia 928: 4.5-inch OLED display, OIS camera, available May 16th for $100 (video)

Nokia announces the Lumia 928 45inch OLED display, OIS camera, available May 16th for $100 video

If you've heard enough of Nokia's near future plans for its Lumia range, sorry -- there's more. While the company's official event isn't until next Tuesday in London, that hasn't stopped it from announcing the Lumia 928 on Verizon. Again. Nokia's latest installment supplants the Lumia 822 and HTC's 8X for the US carrier, matching the camera specifications (Carl Zeiss f/2.0 lens, 8.7-megapixel sensor) we saw in the Lumia 920 and pairing it all with a potent xenon flash. There's also high-amp mics and a 4.5-inch OLED (1,280 x 768) display protected by a layer of Gorilla Glass. Inside, you'll find a capable 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 2,000mAH battery and 32GB of storage for all those low-blur photos. As for the phone itself, compared to the bright (admittedly chunky) looks of its predecessor, we're looking at a toned-down refresh, in black and white options, with a more squared design aiming to complement those Windows Phone Live Tiles.

Contactless charging and NFC are both built in, as are all those extra Nokia software additions, including Here maps and Nokia Music. It'll launch in the US on May 16th, priced at $99.99 with a mail-in rebate, while you'll also pick up $25 of credit for Windows Phone apps and games if you decide to sign up. Nokia's got an officially sanctioned hands-on after the break -- expect to see our opinions on it next week.

The Big B in ?The Great Gatsby?: TIME?s Q&A with Amitabh Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan is India?s biggest and most-enduring movie star, with hit films ranging from?Sholay?in 1975 to?Paa?in 2009. He also hosted five seasons of the Indian version of?Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Bachchan has a cameo role in Baz Luhrmann?s?The Great Gatsby, and spoke to?TIME?s Jyoti Thottam in New York on May 6.

How did you meet Baz Luhrmann?

Baz Luhrmann was on a private visit to India a couple of years ago, traveling around on his motorcycle, visiting a friend of his who was an artist. He came over, and we talked about everything but films. And then a year or so later I got another message about a film that he?s doing, we spoke on the phone, and we Skyped and he said, you know, Amitabh, I?m making Great Gatsby, and there?s a small role, I know it?s not worth your while to do something like this but I?d be very delighted if you could.

This is your first Hollywood film. Why now?

Primarily because of the way Baz Luhrmann came across, more as a friend than anything else. I just felt that I had the time and perhaps the ability and the intention to do something like this, truly as a gesture rather than looking at it as a stepping stone for another release in Hollywood. I didn?t think of doing it like that but now that it?s done and if there are opportunities, I would certainly consider it.

What different about making movies in Hollywood, rather than Bollywood?

We make over 1000 films every year. Hollywood makes about 300, but Hollywood makes more money. That just shows the reach and the marketability. That?s something that we lack. We don?t know how to market our films. Now all the corporations are there in India. They?re co-producing films, they?re distributing them. I just feel that sooner or later the sheer potential of the demographics of India, which is 1.25 billion people, will eventually be very attractive to the entertainment industry.

In Slumdog Millionaire, the young hero is willing to go through anything to meet you, but the film uses a double. Did Danny Boyle ask you to appear in the film as yourself?

No, but his office did call to say, we?re wanting to use images of yours from films. Is that okay with you?

You?ve had success in film and TV; how are they different?

TV is huge now in India. It is certainly bigger commercially now than films. Its reach and its connectivity is instant; it?s faster than film.

Is it as satisfying for you as an artist?

I don?t mind it. When the proposal for KBC [for Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Hindi translation of Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?] was made to me, I found it an exciting show. I was hesitant about how it was going to be conducted in India so Star TV took me to England. I went and saw it and said, if you can give me a the same production in India, I?ll be very happy to join. And to their credit, they did. And as an actor I would not mind to do something more than just a game show. I find that American television for example, there?s a huge amount of production value in their shows, and I?m amazed about how they?re able to do this. I?m very keen to be involved in something like that.

Any American TV shows that you watch?

I see a lot of them; I can?t remember all their names. They?re all so fantastic. The last ones that left a lot of impression was the one about the White House. West Wing? With Martin Sheen. Grey?s Anatomy. Game of Thrones. Yes, superb.

You?re moving into digital entertainment now; what?s it like to move to smaller and smaller screens?

If the modes are changing, one goes along with it I guess. A lot of people think that when you?re playing leading roles you don?t want to take the risk. I don?t think in terms of risk right now. I?m no longer in that category?of the superstars, the younger generation?so I can do those things, you know, just to satisfy my curiosity. I write my own blog every day. I do the Twitter every day and the Facebook. Without a gap. I do everything myself, I load my own photographs, I sometimes take my own videos and post them.

Are you getting more involved in the business end of digital entertainment?

We are holding hands now with CA Media, which is a Peter Chernin company. He came across and he met me and we talked about films and entertainment in general. I actually talked to him about digital promotion. When I started my blog one of the things that I felt awkward about was asking people to pay to read my blog. I still maintain that. But if it is done in a guarded fashion and it doesn?t look as though I am doing this as a business, and they can protect that, then it?s fine.

Many investors feel that the business climate isn?t as welcoming in India as they would like. Are people starting to cool on India?

No, I don?t feel that. Even in a cool state we?re still percentages higher than the rest of the world [in terms of GDP growth]. Even if we?re not doing 9%, we?re doing 7%, okay, it?s still more than the United States. I think you need to go with the basic thought?the basic thought is that you will not be able to ignore the kind of demographics that exist in our country.

For a while, people were expecting that a Bollywood film might break big internationally, but that hasn?t happened yet. Why do you think that is?

I don?t know. I don?t know in what way people expect that. Are you wanting to make a film in English? In Chinese or Japanese or what? Because you can make a film in Hindi and it can be dubbed. But if you?re saying you want to make a deliberate subject, which is going to cater to the United States of America, perhaps not. What I find now is a lot of realism ? realistic cinema and topics and subjects that project the real India are going through, so now you have someone like [director] Anurag Kashyap, whose Gangs of Wasseypur is being previewed and invited to the Cannes Film Festival.

How has the film industry changed since you started?

I feel very out of place at times because the average age on set is about 25. And I?m 71. But I?m very excited to see them. It?s a huge change from when I started in the 1960s, but what is really impressive is that the number of ladies on set, the women working on set is a huge percentage. There used to be no women. It was just the leading lady?s mother, perhaps the hairdresser and the makeup person. But you have women now working as assistant directors, assistants to cameramen, production managers, scriptwriters, doing dialogue, directing films.

How has that changed the dynamic of filmmaking?

If you have a woman who?s directing it her perspective is going to be in it. And if you have a leading lady who?s a woman ? [the 2012 thriller] Kahaani was a tremendous example of that. It?s a lone battle of a woman who succeeds in the end. It?s like the leading man of the old times.

Your son, Abhishek, is also in the film industry. Do you see it differently than he does?

I don?t know. I had this feeling that if I had a son, that he would be my friend, that I would not be a father figure. So we just, you know, we are friends. And we talk about music or films, or clothing, where to go, Skyping, Facetime, I was just on Facetime. It?s a state of mind really. You can live with your past and be quiet. But I?m still in the business.

Spacewalk planned to fix ammonia leak on space station

MIAMI (Reuters) - NASA plans to send two astronauts aboard the International Space Station out on a spacewalk on Saturday to try to fix an ammonia leak in a cooling system on one of the station's solar arrays, the U.S. space agency said on Friday.

The crew spotted a steady stream of small, white frozen ammonia flakes floating away from a coolant line outside the orbital outpost on Thursday.

Mission managers reviewed images and data gathered overnight and said on Friday they tentatively planned to send American astronauts Chris Cassidy and Tom Marshburn out on Saturday morning to try to stop the leak by replacing a pump on the cooling system.

"The crew is not in danger, and the station continues to operate normally otherwise," NASA said in a news release.

Ammonia is used to cool the power systems that operate the solar arrays, which provide electricity to the station. Each of the eight solar arrays has its own independent cooling system.

The leak is on the far left side of the station's truss structure, in an ammonia loop that astronauts previously tried to troubleshoot during a spacewalk in November 2012.

While Cassidy and Marshburn are working outside the space station, crew commander Chris Hadfield, a Canadian astronaut, will choreograph their movements from inside the orbital outpost. Russian cosmonauts Pavel Vinogradov, Alexander Misurkin and Roman Romanenko make up the rest of the crew.

Work was under way to reroute the remaining power channels to maintain full operation of the systems normally controlled by the solar array that is cooled by the leaking loop.

The space station, a $100 billion research laboratory that orbits 250 miles above Earth, is owned by the United States and Russia in partnership with Europe, Japan and Canada.

With gun violence down, is America arming against an imagined threat?

A Pew study released Tuesday finds that Americans think gun violence has escalated when in reality it's way down from two decades ago. The violence has dropped, meanwhile, even as gun ownership has increased.

By Patrik Jonsson,?Staff Writer / May 8, 2013

A pink assault rifle hangs among others at an exhibit booth at the George R. Brown convention center, the site for the National Rifle Association's (NRA) annual meeting in Houston, Texas, Sunday. Americans think gun violence has escalated when in reality it's way down from two decades ago, a Pew Research Center study released Tuesday finds.

Mass shootings, frantic gun-buying, and more Americans legally carrying guns on the street all point to a country fighting a gun violence epidemic, right?

Not necessarily.

As part of a broader trend of declining crime, gun violence in America ? while still high relative to other Western countries ? has dropped by 49 percent from 1993 to 2011, while nonfatal gun crimes dropped by 69 percent, according to the US Justice Department.

But that slow-motion decline in Americans turning guns on each other has failed to register with most people, only 12 percent of whom answered the question correctly when asked by the Pew Research Center in a poll released Tuesday. Some 56 percent of respondents said they believed that gun violence had actually increased over the last 20 years.

The reasons for the perception gap are manifold, including a steady stream of high profile shootings and massacres, an increased focus on crime by national media and cable networks, and partisan sniping about gun politics. But the gap is so huge, agrees D?Vera Cohn, a senior writer at Pew, in an AP interview, that it?s hard to explain.

America is still bleeding from gun violence, make no mistake. Some 12,343 people were killed by guns in 2010, keeping the US at the top of the most violent Western countries. The US also has more guns, per capita, than any other Western country, with at least 310 million and as many as 400 million firearms in circulation.

Since 1993, the rate of gun violence dropped by the greatest degree in the 1990s and has stayed relatively stable since the early 2000s. But recent years have witnessed a dramatic shift in US gun culture, with millions of Americans getting certified to carry concealed weapons and women increasingly joining the ranks of gun owners.

An estimated 8 million Americans now have concealed weapons permits, and thousands wear guns openly in the 43 states that allow it. Atlanta Police Chief George Turner told the Monitor recently that urban police no longer automatically assume a citizen wearing a gun is in the process of committing a crime, as they did just a few years ago.

In a separate survey, Pew found in March that 49 percent of gun owners keep firearms for protection today, compared with 26 percent who said the same in 1999. In other words, it appears that perceptions about the rate of violent crime are partly responsible for the growth of gun ownership across the US in the last 20 years, a trend only helped along by Supreme Court decisions and state laws that have increasingly backed greater gun rights.

?The gun prohibition lobby has long promoted this idea that reducing the number of guns is a good idea, that fewer guns are better categorically,? says Dave Kopel, a research analyst at the Independence Institute in Denver. ?But here we have a real world experiment which shows the opposite, where we have a huge decline in gun crime at the same time as there?s been an enormous increase in the firearms supply in the United States. It doesn?t prove that the increase in gun numbers or licensed carry caused the decline, but it sure does contest the simplistic theory ? that more guns equal more crime.?

Goddammit, We Still Can't Cure Alzheimer's Disease

Last summer, a promising trial of a new antibody treatment was shown to totally stop cognitive decline in four Alzheimer's patients over the course of three years, giving researchers hope that the disease could be slowed or even cured. This year, it was expanded into a double blind placebo test and administered to nearly 100 times more Alzheimer's patients. It proved ineffective. Goddammit.

Minnesota set to be 12th state to allow gay marriage

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ? A pivotal vote Thursday in the Minnesota House positioned that state to become the 12th in the country to allow gay marriages and the first in the Midwest to pass such a law out of its Legislature.

The 75-59 vote was a critical step for the measure, which would allow same-sex weddings beginning this summer. It's a startling shift in the state, where just six months earlier voters turned back an effort to ban them in the Minnesota Constitution.

The state Senate plans to consider the bill Monday and leaders expect it to pass there too. Gov. Mark Dayton has pledged to sign it into law.

"My family knew firsthand that same sex couples pay our taxes, we vote, we serve in the military, we take care of our kids and our elders and we run businesses in Minnesota," said the bill's sponsor, Rep. Karen Clark, a Minneapolis Democrat who is gay. "... Same-sex couples should be treated fairly under the law, including the freedom to marry the person we love."

Hundreds of supporters and opponents gathered outside the House chamber up to and during the debate, chanting and waving signs. They sang "We Shall Overcome" and a John Lennon song in the minutes before the vote.

Four of the House's 61 Republicans voted for the bill, while two of its 73 Democrats voted against it.

Opponents argued the bill would alter a centuries-old conception of marriage and leave those people opposed for religious reasons tarred as bigots.

"We're not. We're not," said Rep. Kelby Woodard, R-Belle Plaine. "These are people with deeply held beliefs, including myself."

Pro-marriage demonstrators filled the hallways outside the House chambers, some dressed in orange T-Shirts and holding signs that read, "I Support The Freedom to Marry." Behind them, opponents held up bright pink signs that simply read, "Vote No."

Among the demonstrators was Grace McBride, 27, a nurse from St. Paul. She said she and her partner felt compelled to be there to watch history unfold. She said she hopes to get married "as soon as I can" if the bill becomes law. The legislation would allow her to do so starting Aug. 1.

"I have thought about my wedding since I was a little girl," she said.

On the other side of the divide, the Rev. Steve Goold of New Hope Church led followers in a morning prayer before they set out to lobby lawmakers. He told them they had the power to change minds, but urged them to be respectful.

"Do not shout and boo. Pray," Goold said. Galina Komar, a recent Ukrainian immigrant who lives in Bloomington, brought her four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son to the Capitol to express her religious concerns.

"I do believe in God, and I believe God already created the perfect way to have a family," Komar said.

But gay marriage supporters also boasted faith leaders in their ranks.

"I've celebrated marriages for same-sex couples, but I've never been able to sign a marriage license for any of them," said the Rev. Jay Carlson, pastor at a Minneapolis Lutheran church. "I look forward to the day when I can."

Eleven other states allow gay marriages ? including Rhode Island and Delaware, which approved laws in the past week. Minnesota would be the first state in the Midwest to pass the measure out of the Legislature.

Iowa allows gay marriages because of a 2009 court ruling. Leaders in Illinois ? the only Midwestern state other than Minnesota with a Democratic-led statehouse ? say that state is close to having the votes to approve a law too.

But most other states surrounding Minnesota have constitutional bans against same-sex weddings, so the change might not spread to the nation's heartland nearly as quickly as it has on the coasts and in New England.

The Minnesota push for gay marriage grew out of last fall's successful campaign to defeat a constitutional amendment that would have banned it. Minnesota became the first state to turn back such an amendment after more than two dozen states had passed one over more than a decade.

The same election put Democrats in full control of state government for the first time in more than two decades, a perfect scenario for gay marriage supporters to swiftly pursue legalization. They tapped the cross-section of citizens, businesses, churches and others who spoke out against the amendment and staged rallies as part of a lobbying effort to build support.

The bill cleared committees in both chambers in March, and with a succession of national polls showing opposition to gay marriage falling away nationally.

"There are kids being raised by grandparents, single parents, two moms or two dads," said Rep. Laurie Halverson, a Democrat from the Twin Cities suburbs. "Some of those folks are my friends. And we talk about the same things as parents. We talk about large piles of laundry, and how much it hurts to step on a Lego. That's what we do, because we're all families."
