Is your craft stash creeping out of the craft room?or the boxes under your bed?and slowly taking over your home? First, rest assured that you?re not alone. Second, you?ll definitely want to check out this roundup of 100 dollar store home organization ideas from Jessica at Mad in Crafts!

There are any number of excuses I can make for why I haven?t taken the time to organize our house: not enough time to do it all, don?t know where to start, organizational supplies are too expensive, etc. It?s easy to get discouraged and quit before I am even started. But the truth is, the supplies to get an entire house in order don?t have to cost a small fortune. Most of them can be found right at the local dollar store.

To prove this to myself, and to you, I took a trip to my local Dollar Tree. ONE trip, no going back for forgotten items or things they didn?t have in stock. I brought along my iPod and took photos of all the supplies they carry that can be used to get a house in order.

Ready to get your craft room?or maybe even your whole house?in order? Head over to Mad in Crafts to check out Jessica?s full collection of links, ideas, and tips!

Sony's Xperia Tablet Z announced: 1.5GHz quad-core, 10.1-inch 1,920 x 1,200 screen and 6.9mm thickness

Sony's Xperia Tablet Z announced 15GHz quadcore, 101inch 1,920 x 1,200 screen and 69mm thickness

Announced bright and early in Japan today is the Sony Xperia Tablet Z that we've been hearing about. As you'd expect, this 10.1-inch Android 4.1 tablet features the same design language as its smartphone counterpart, but it's what's inside that really sells this device: a Qualcomm 1.5GHz quad-core APQ8064 processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB storage, a 10.1-inch 1,920 x 1,200 screen (with Mobile Bravia Engine 2), an 8.1-megapixel Exmor R camera, NFC, LTE (MDM9215M radio), microSD expansion and Sony's very own "S-Force" virtual surround sound technology. Amazingly, these are all packed tightly into a 6.9mm-thick, 495g-heavy body which not only takes a huge leap from the retiring Xperia Tablet S, but it also beats the Toshiba Excite 10 LE that was once the champion in both fields. That's right, Sony now has the world's thinnest and lightest 10-inch tablet! Oh, and did we mention that the Tablet Z is both waterproof and dustproof as well? We'll update you guys once we get hold of info on pricing and availability.

Update: For those wondering, Blog of Mobile says this new tablet packs a 6,000mAh battery, which is actually a tad smaller than the Excite 10 LE's 6,690mAh cell. Hopefully Sony's power management will bring its tablet up to about the same mobility performance.

Deadliest volcano eruptions listed in database

Live on the East Coast? Thinking of escaping to a warm Caribbean island right now? You might want to check a new, open access database of the world's deadliest volcanoes first.

Though not intended as a travel advisory, the database does include several Caribbean volcanoes, such as Montserrat's Soufri?re Hills volcano, which sent pyroclastic flows down the mountain in 2010. (The rest of the island remains a lush resort.) However, researchers do hope the public learns more about volcanic hazards in their region by accessing the records.

"The long-term goal of this project is to have a global source of freely available information on volcanic hazards," principal investigator Stephen Sparks, a volcanologist at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom, said in a statement.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. African-American rescues lost tribal treasures

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: An African-American family researcher is bringing ceremonial masks and other cultural artifacts back to Cameroon ? after buying them on eBay.

    2. Stampeding dinosaurs were actually swimming
    3. Doggy database gauges Labrador health
    4. Fisheries yet another victim of tsunami

Compiled by an international team from the University of Bristol with colleagues from the United Kingdom, United States, Colombia and Japan, the database provides free access to large volcanic events of magnitude 4 and greater. The scale is a relative measure of the explosiveness of volcanic eruptions. The 2010 eruption Eyjafjallaj?kull in Iceland was a magnitude 4; the May 18, 1980, eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington was a magnitude 5; and when the Philippines' Mount Pinatubo blew its top in 1991, it was a magnitude 6 eruption.

"Magnitude 4 or greater eruptions are typically responsible for the most loss of life," geologist Sian Crosweller of the University Bristol, who led the database team, said in a statement. "The database's restriction to eruptions of this size puts the emphasis on events whose low frequency and large hazard footprint mean preparation and response are often poor."

The open access database, called Large Magnitude Explosive Eruptions (LaMEVE), will provide crucial information to researchers, civil authorities and the general public, the statement said.

There are nearly 3,000 volcanoes and more than 1,800 eruptions in the database, spanning 1.8 million years. The team plans to extend the records back to the beginning of the Quaternary period, 2.58 million years ago.

The Smithsonian Institution also maintains an exhaustive database of the world's volcanoes, called the Global Volcanism Program, but only for those active in the past 10,000 years.

The LaMEVE database is part of a major international effort called the Global Volcano Model, aimed at better understanding volcanic hazards and risk and reducing the loss of life and damage from future eruptions.

PST: MLS combine names to know, if you care

Major League Soccer?s annual player combine is to domestic soccer what a good foodie blog is to the general eating population.

You really, really have to be super into the subject to get something worthwhile out of it. I mean, you gotta be craving some extra layers of knowledge.

There surely are young men passing and trapping right now at the MLS combine in Fort Lauderdale who will one day shine brightly on MLS stages. But there?s a real winnowing process at work; so many of the athletes in those temporary colors of semi-randomly assembled teams will never be inside an MLS facility unless they buy a ticket.

I mean, perhaps you want to know just who was that lefty winger from the NAIA school who tore it up on the first day? Or perhaps you?re dying to know if a certain ACC striker can function effectively without the service of a certain powerhouse playmaker that has operated behind him in college?

If that?s you ? here?s a good place to start.

It?s Soccer America?s list of 10 players to watch at the combine. ?Matches began today.

Israel pursues ethnic cleansing policy: Saeb Shaath

An analyst says the Likud Party is firm on its plans to disconnect Palestinians from their land totally and to do a deal with Jordan.

In the background of this a protest group that consisted of both Palestinians and foreign activists set up a tent camp in a creative effort to show peaceful resistance to the occupation of Palestinian lands and a demonstration against illegal Israeli settlement building. The move was legally approved by the High Court of Israel. Netanyahu acting in defiance of the High Court rule had army forces forcefully dismantle the tent camp, which was on private Palestinian property. Several activists were injured in the process. The reaction has been has been seen as desperate by many observers. The tent camp however, has received wide praise as the event - and indeed the Israeli reaction - successfully attracted international attention to the Palestinian cause.

Press TV has interviewed Mr. Saab Shaath, author and political commentator, Belfast about this issue.

Attorneys spar over fate of California boy who killed neo-Nazi dad

RIVERSIDE, California (Reuters) - A lawyer for a California boy accused of murdering his neo-Nazi father urged a judge on Wednesday to convict his client of a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter, citing what he termed an abusive upbringing.

But a prosecutor told the court that Joseph Hall, who both sides agree shot his father at point blank range in May 2011 when he was 10 years old, knew at the time his actions were wrong, and that abuse allegations cited by the defense were a diversion.

"Joseph was not raised in the home described by the defense here," Riverside County Deputy District Attorney Michael Soccio said during his closing remarks in the high-profile trial. "It doesn't exist. It's fiction, a smoke screen, a red herring."

Defense lawyers concede that Hall, now 12, shot his 32-year-old father, a regional director of the National Socialist Movement, with his own gun, but argue that the boy should not be held criminally responsible.

The case in Riverside, 60 miles east of Los Angeles, has made headlines because of Jeffrey Hall's neo-Nazi associations and the rarity of a parent being killed by a child so young.

Kathleen Heide, a criminologist who specializes in juvenile offenders, has said that 8,000 murder victims over the past 32 years were slain by their offspring, but only 16 of those crimes were committed by defendants aged 10 or younger.

Riverside County Superior Court Judge Jean Leonard, who is hearing the juvenile case without a jury, was expected to render her verdict on Monday.

Because Hall is a minor, the purpose of the trial is not to determine guilt or innocence, but whether certain allegations about his motives are true. If he is found responsible for the crime, he could be sent to a juvenile facility until he is 23.

Defense lawyers have said the boy was conditioned by his father's violent, racist behavior and that he killed him to put an end to physical abuse.

Defense attorney Matthew Hardy - who on Monday withdrew his young client's plea of not guilty by reason of insanity - told Leonard that Hall should be convicted of voluntary manslaughter because he was essentially acting in self-defense.

Hardy displayed a photo of Hall, his father and an unidentified young girl standing with a man who was wearing Ku Klux Klan robes. Hall was holding a toy gun in the picture.

"I put this photo up to show the type of conditioning Joseph had," he said. "This young man never had a chance in his life. He was pre-programmed to act immorally."

A psychologist called as a witness by the defense testified during the trial that the boy had been conditioned to violence by years of physical, emotional and likely sexual abuse.

But Soccio called Jeffrey Hall a "loving father" who taught his son to be nonviolent despite his own neo-Nazi ties, and said the boy "made the choice" to kill.

Prosecutors say Hall, who lived with four siblings, shot his father because he thought he was planning to divorce his stepmother, Krista McCary. Prosecutors said the boy was close to McCary and considered her his true mother.

"The proper finding should be murder," he said. "The evidence is ample that it was premeditated and planned."

Inprov Electronics Boogie Board Sync hands-on

Either Improv Electronics loves trees, or note taking. Perhaps both? What we do know for sure is that its latest offering to the list maker is here at CES, and we just got some hands (and pen) on time with it. The Sync is a 9.7-inch slate containing the company's own eWriting technology. More than that, it also has a microSD card slot, USB and Bluetooth. That last addition is where the money is with this particular model, allowing you to wirelessly... sync with other enabled devices (i.e. second screens, desktops and iOS / Android devices). This means you can scribble away on the Sync, and have your scrawls appear at presentations and beyond. Of course, any note taking device wouldn't be complete without some Evernote integration, and luckily enough, it's present here. So, once you're done transferring inspiration from brain to slate you can grab it as a an image, and store it in the cloud for later.

The models themselves were still prototypes, but they looked and felt solid and comfortable to use. As with the other models in the line, there are little ergonomic touches that please the eye and hand alike. There's a mount on the side for the all important stylus, and the screen itself -- wile utilitarian in nature -- is easy to look at, and text, words and drawings appear clear. The SD card functionality means you can save your notes for later upload, and the mobile app functionality is also set to continually improve, with real-time second screen coming to mobile and tablets, as well as on desktop. The Sync will be up for grabs sometime around the holiday season this year. For now, sync with the gallery and video past the break.

Steve Dent contributed to this report.

Riddick, Wood interchanging for Notre Dame

MIAMI (AP) ? Notre Dame tailbacks Theo Riddick and Cierre Wood showed how interchangeable they are in the final two games of the regular season for the Fighting Irish.

Game 11 against Wake Forest, Wood ran for 150 yards, while Riddick had 20.

Game 12 against USC, it was Riddick running for 146 yards, and Wood for 20.

And so has been the theme for the Irish this season: Two running backs ? and sometimes three ? are better than one. That approach has served Notre Dame pretty much since training camp, and the top-ranked Irish (12-0) are hoping it holds true once Monday night when they face No. 2 Alabama (12-1) in the BCS title game.

Riddick has run for 880 yards and five touchdowns this season, Wood 740 yards and four scores, and George Atkinson III ? who got only 51 carries, compared with 180 for Riddick and 110 for Wood ? added five touchdowns and 7.1 yards per carry.

"We try to utilize all their strengths," Notre Dame offensive coordinator Chuck Martin said. "The truth be told, they all could be a feature back, they all could do all the things. Everybody is like, 'He plays more, what's wrong with him?' There's nothing wrong with any of the three. We'd like to get George 20 carries a game but there's one football."

Notre Dame was unranked to start the year, which means not many ? well, very few ? people thought the Irish would be in the national title game against the reigning champion Crimson Tide.

Among those who thought the Irish would play in the season's last game: Riddick, Wood and Atkinson.

"We've had RB meetings where we talk about what we want to do and what we all want to accomplish," Wood said. "In the beginning of the season, what we said normally was, 'We want to win them all.' That was word-for-word what we said. We want to win them all. And up to this point, we have. So we took that upon ourselves. We think we're one of the more skilled groups on the whole team. That's just how we go about our business."

Martin was asked in the days leading up to the BCS title game to describe all three backs, rapid-fire style. His responses:

On Riddick, "pound for pound as good a football player as they make."

On Wood, "as explosive a player as they make."

On Atkinson, "really explosive athlete."

Notice any trends there? The Irish love their backs, and Alabama is raving about what they see from them all as well.

"Riddick is probably quicker than the other two," Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart said. "Great one-step quickness, the ability to make you miss, good stiff arm. Didn't think a former receiver would run with that much power, but he does run with power. They're really good backs."

Riddick came to Notre Dame as a running back, then primarily played wide receiver for two years and returned to the backfield this season. He said he never complained, said he never wondered which position better suited him.

Whatever it took to win was fine with him, Riddick said.

"What can I say? I feel like I'm at ease," Riddick said. "Everything slows down tremendously and I think it's just helped me."

Ask anyone on the Notre Dame offensive line how Riddick has handled his return to running back, and they'll say they believe he's hitting his best stride at the perfect time.

That being, title game.

"He's been unbelievable," offensive lineman Zack Martin said. "Especially in the last three or four games of the season, he's been great. To have a guy like that behind you, he's fun to block for."

That probably can be said for Wood and Atkinson as well.

"It's a credit to all three of them that they've stuck with it and prepared hard every week, and some weeks they've gotten more touches, but that's the nature of the beast," said Chuck Martin, the offensive coordinator. "But we're very fortunate to have three very talented kids at that position."

Bright moon may dull meteor shower

One of the best displays of "shooting stars" will peak overnight Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, but unfortunately will run into some stiff competition this year from a bright moon.

The celestial fireworks display is the Quadrantid meteor shower (pronounced KWA-dran-tid), which kicks off the annual meteor shower schedule every January. To paraphrase Forrest Gump: The Quadrantids are like opening up a box of chocolates; you never know what you're going to get!? Indeed, the "Quads" are notoriously unpredictable.

This year, the meteor shower is peaking while the moon is in its bright gibbous phase, just days after the recent full moon on Dec. 28, which may interfere with the cosmic light show.

The Quadrantids provide one of the most intense annual meteor showers, with a brief, sharp maximum lasting but a few hours. Adolphe Quetelet of Brussels Observatory discovered the shower in the 1830s, and shortly afterward it was noted by several other astronomers in Europe and America. [Amazing Quadrantid Meteor Shower Photo of 2012]

  1. Space news from NBCNews.com

    1. How Neil Armstrong planned his moon speech

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Neil Armstrong's brother tells the BBC that he gave the late astronaut feedback on his history-making speech months before it was uttered on the moon.

    2. First meteor shower of 2013 peaks this week
    3. 13 new space missions to watch in 2013
    4. Space may accelerate Alzheimer's in astronauts

The meteors are named after the obsolete constellation Quadrans Muralis the Mural or Wall Quadrant (an astronomical instrument), depicted in some 19th-century star atlases roughly midway between the end of the Handle of the Big Dipper and the quadrilateral of stars marking the head of the constellation Draco. (The International Astronomical Union phased out Quadrans Muralis in 1922.)

NASA will provide a live webcast of the 2013 Quadrantid meteor shower each night this week through Friday. You can follow the meteor shower on Space.com here courtesy of the NASA feed.

Difficult to see
Unfortunately, many factors combine to make the peak of this display difficult to observe on a regular basis:

A brief peak period: The Quadrantids? meteor rates exceed half of their highest value for only about six hours (compared to two days for the Perseid meteor shower in August). This means that the stream of particles that produce this shower is a narrow one ? apparently originating from a small comet within the last 500 years.

The parentage of the Quadrantids had long been a mystery until astronomer Peter Jenniskens, a meteor expert with the SETI Institute at Mountain View, Calif., noticed that the orbit of 2003 EH1 ? a small asteroid discovered in March 2003 ? ''falls snug in the shower.'' He believes that the 1.2-mile-wide (2 kilometers) asteroid is the source of the Quadrantids. The asteroid, in turn, is possibly the burnt out core of the lost comet C/1490 Y1. [Quadrantid Meteors in the Night Sky (Video)]

You have to be an early bird (or extreme night owl): As viewed from midnorthern latitudes, we have to get up before dawn to see the Quadrantids at their best. This is because the radiant (the part of the sky from where the meteors to appear to originate) is down low on the northern horizon until about midnight, rising slowly higher as the night progresses. The growing light of dawn ends meteor observing usually by around 7 a.m.? So, if the "Quads" are to be seen at all, some part of that eight-hour active period must fall between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m.

It?s winter in the north: Over northern latitudes, early January often sees inclement or unsettled weather.

The moon interferes: In one out of every three years, bright moonlight spoils the view and unfortunately, 2013 is one of those years. According to British meteor expert Alastair McBeath: "The waning gibbous moon causes severe problems for detailed observations of the Quadrantid maximum in 2013."

It is not surprising then, that the Quadrantids are not as well-known as some of the other annual meteor showers.

Quadrantid meteor shower viewing tips
According to Robert Lunsford of the American Meteor Society, here is what to expect during the Quadrantid meteor shower?s peak: "A bright gibbous moon (will be) located near the Leo-Virgo border. Activity can be still seen from the Quadrantids if your skies are clear and transparent. It would also be wise to keep the moon out of your field of view by facing the north to east quadrant of the sky."

In 2013, Western North America will be favored to view of the peak of the Quadrantids. Maximum activity this year is expected on Thursday morning at 5 a.m. Pacific Standard Time. For those in the western United States, the meteor shower's origin radiant will be about two-thirds of the way up in the east-northeast sky.

The farther to the north and east you go, the higher in the sky the radiant will be. To the south and west the radiant will be lower and the meteors will be fewer.

Quadrantid meteors are described as bright and bluish with long silvery trains. As McBeath and Lunsford have pointed out, the moon's presence will make seeing the maximum number of meteors problematic.? Without the bright moon, western observers likely would see as many as 60 to 75 meteors per hour; a very dark sky might even yield 100 or more per hour.

But this year, the moon will be the big obstacle. For every magnitude of naked eye stars hidden by moonlight or light pollution, the number of meteors is cut by roughly 60 percent.

You can check how bright your moonlit sky is by looking for the Little Dipper star pattern. The four stars in the bowl are of magnitudes 2, 3, 4 and 5 (the lower the number, the brighter the star). So, if you can see only three of the four stars in the bowl, your limiting magnitude would be 4, meaning you would see only about one-tenth the meteors you would if you were under a very dark, moonless sky.??

Quadrantid meteor rates will be lower across the central and eastern United States, as well as other places north of the equator where the peak of the shower will occur either after sunrise or with the shower radiant very low in the sky. Observers south of the equator will have little chance of seeing any "Quads" since the radiant will not clear the horizon before morning twilight interferes.

Fiscal cliff deal forged in flurry of final talks

WASHINGTON (AP) ? They had 80 hours to finish or fail.

Stuck in a "fiscal cliff" stalemate, trust nearing tatters, President Barack Obama and Senate Republicans changed the game after Christmas. It took the rekindling of an old friendship between Vice President Joe Biden and GOP Sen. Mitch McConnell, an extraordinary flurry of secret offers, a pre-dawn Senate vote on New Year's Day and the legislative muscling that defines Washington on deadline.

The House, despite Republican resistance, passed the Senate bill late Tuesday, sending the measure to Obama for his signature.

How the final days of private negotiations pulled the country back from the precipice of the fiscal cliff marked a rare moment of bipartisanship for a divided government. Several officials familiar with talks requested anonymity to discuss them because they were not authorized to discuss the private details publicly.

Obama, having cut short his Christmas vacation in Hawaii, huddled with congressional leaders Friday afternoon at the White House. Talks between the president and House Speaker John Boehner had failed, so Obama put the fate of the fiscal cliff in the hands of McConnell and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

McConnell made the first move. The Kentucky Republican proposed a plan late Friday night that would extend tax cuts expiring Jan. 1 on family income up to $750,000 a year, according to officials. He also wanted to keep tax rates on wealthy estates at 35 percent, slow the growth of Social Security cost-of-living increases, and pay for an offset of the sequester ? Congress's term for across-the-board spending cuts __ by means-testing Medicare. His offer did not include the extension of unemployment benefits Obama had demanded.

Democrats balked and began preparing a counteroffer. It called for extending tax cuts for family income up to $350,000, a concession from Obama's campaign pledge to cap the threshold at $250,000. The Democratic leader also insisted that any deal include a way to deal with the sequester, plus an extension of the jobless benefits for 2 million Americans.

The negotiating teams traded ideas back and forth on a wintry Saturday. Shortly before 7 p.m., McConnell presented another offer. He dropped the tax cut threshold to $550,000, put the sequester on the table, and offered a one-year extension of the jobless benefits as long as they were paid for through Social Security savings.

Rather than make a counteroffer, the Senate Democratic negotiating team said it was going home for the night. They reconvened Sunday morning ? less than two days before the combination of tax hikes and spending cuts were due to kick in ? but still had nothing new to present to McConnell.

Reid's inaction, officials said, was due in part to McConnell's insistence on keeping the tax cut threshold above $500,000, a level Obama refused to agree to.

A frustrated McConnell felt he had one last option. He called Biden, his longtime Senate colleague and frequent negotiating partner, and implored him to step in. Seeking to up the pressure on the White House, McConnell publicly announced that he was reaching out to Biden during remarks from the Senate floor during the rare Sunday session.

Until this late stage, Biden had played a secondary role in the "fiscal cliff" talks. He spent Saturday at his home in Wilmington, Del., and was planning to travel to the Caribbean island of St. Croix with his family for the New Year's holiday.

Obama and Reid both agreed that Biden, a 36-year veteran of the Senate, should take the lead. And once he did, negotiations with McConnell rapidly accelerated.

Around 8 p.m. Sunday, Obama, Biden and staffers met in the Oval Office to discuss what the vice president would deliver to McConnell as the administration's final offer.

The president set the upper limit for the tax cut extension at family income of $450,000. The sequester must be dealt with, he said, and any delay must be offset through a combination of spending cuts and revenue increases. And Obama demanded that the jobless benefits be extended for one year without a way to make up the $30 billion cost.

Shortly after midnight, Biden had McConnell's consent on nearly all of the outstanding issues. Only the sequester was unresolved, though both men were open to a plan that called for a separate vote on the sequester, pending Reid's consent.

The president, vice president and senior staff met in the Oval Office until 2 a.m. to talk through the final details. Obama's legislative director, Rob Nabors, then headed to Capitol Hill to join Senate negotiators in drafting the outlines of a bill that could be moved on quickly Monday.

Nabors worked continuously throughout the final stages, stopping at home only to change his shirt after leaving the Capitol and before heading to the White House before 7 a.m. Monday.

By then, the White House had spoken to Reid, who rejected the notion of holding a separate sequester vote. Biden broke the news to McConnell in a pre-dawn phone call.

The sequester remained the sticking point throughout Monday, with Biden trading proposals with McConnell's office for much of the day. By early evening, discussions coalesced around delaying the automatic spending cuts by two months and paying for the move through a combination of new spending cuts and revenue increases. A hiccup over the estate tax was also resolved.

Shortly before 9 p.m., with three hours until the deadline, Biden and McConnell agreed to the final deal. After Obama called Reid and Pelosi to get their sign-off, the vice president headed up to Capitol Hill to sell the bill to Senate Democrats.

Lawmakers and staff rang in the new year in cramped offices in the West Wing and on Capitol Hill, surrounded by empty pizza boxes and the stray bottle of cheap champagne.

Midnight also marked the moment the government technically went over the "fiscal cliff," although financial markets were closed Tuesday for the holiday. But optimism ran high on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue that the impact would be negligible. The Senate overwhelming approved the Biden-McConnell deal in the early hours of Tuesday morning and sent the bill to the House for final approval.

Fiscal cliff resolution good news for auto industry

1 hr.

The last-minute compromise that kept the country from going off the so-called fiscal cliff is good news for the U.S. economy and great news for the auto industry, for as the old adage goes: when the economy catches cold the auto industry gets pneumonia.

The resolution in Washington sidestepped some key issues that must yet be worked out in the coming months. But barring some later hitch that generates a new crisis, most industry analysts and insiders are confident that the U.S. car market is finally back on track after its worst downturn since the Great Depression.

A new study by R.L. Polk is forecasting new vehicle registrations will reach 15.3 million in the U.S. this year and ?We see it getting into the 16 million range by 2015,? Tom Libby, Polk?s lead analyst for North American forecasting, tells TheDetroitBureau.com.?

That would be a roughly 50% increase in 2013 from the bottom of the automotive market collapse during the depths of the downturn, and a 6% to 7% rise from the anticipated final sales numbers for 2012 ? which are likely to reach near 14.5 million when year-end figures are reported by the industry tomorrow.?

The Detroit Bureau:?GM Steps Up European Restructuring

As good as that might sound, the turnaround is still lagging behind prior recoveries.? The U.S. auto market reached an all-time high in 2005 of 17.5 million vehicles, a figure Libby ? and other analysts ? don?t expect the industry to again see ?in the near-term.? In fact, few anticipate coming even close to that record before the country enters the next cyclical economic dip.

But few think that matters, either.

?The industry is very different from 2005,? explains Libby, ?when there was much greater production capacity that was forcing manufacturers to use a lot larger incentives? to buoy demand and keep factories running. ?We saw those years as artificially high.?

In fact, Detroit?s makers were saddled with so much excess capacity that even with sales running at record levels they could barely maintain profitability. By the time the industry was at its 2005 peak General Motors and Chrysler were already accelerating their slide towards the 2009 bankruptcies they survived only with the aid of a massive federal bailout.?

The Detroit Bureau:?Avis Buys Zipcar for Nearly $500 Mil?

The Detroit makers leaned out their operations by closing dozens of assembly and component plants, scaling back wherever possible ? and with the help of major concessions from union workers.

With less excess capacity and lower operating costs, automakers don?t need to dangle massive incentives in front of otherwise reluctant buyers.? According to data from TrueCar.come, the average rebate and other giveback has fallen substantially over the last 12 months and even more dramatically since the bottom years of 2009 and 2010.? At the same time, transaction prices ? what customers actually pay for a new vehicle ? have been running at or near all-time records.

As a result, says Libby, sales of ?15 million to 16 million is very health (and the makers) will see major profits and everyone will be very healthy.??

The Detroit Bureau:?Beyonce to Get New C7 Corvette at Super Bowl

He and other industry figures warn that things could still fall off the cliff if Congress can?t resolve the remaining fiscal issues later this year.? But Libby believes that Americans are ?becoming numb? to the sort of posturing and infighting of a gridlocked Congress and that means the panicky headlines are less likely to send potential car buyers into hiding compared to political crises of the past.

That?s why the anticipated sales numbers for December ? which will be released on January third ? should be among the best for all of 2012 and provide a burst of momentum for the New Year.

Small business money management errors to avoid ? The Punch ...

Every small business owner works for the growth of his or her venture. However, this cannot be achieved without scrupulous financial management, Okechukwu Nnodim writes

Financial management consultants and small business analysts say no venture can grow as expected without proper accounting of its finances. It is common knowledge that the wrong usage of money, especially when running a small business, often leads to regrets. It is therefore, important that you manage your cash flow wisely considering the harsh economic realities of the present time. Experts say two of the most important aspects of owning a small business are to keep personal spending and business spending separate. They note that the life-line of your business is a healthy cash flow.

To avoid making money management errors as an entrepreneur, you should always try to stretch the business?s available capital for as long as possible before the injection of additional capital is necessary. Speaking on money management guidelines for small businesses, a business analyst, entrepreneur and consultant, who is also the Chief Executive, Solomon Hunt Limited, Mr. Tobenna Okoli, says ?We need to categorise money management into costs and income. On the cost side, there is a rule of thumb not to buy that which you can lease. Do not lease what you can borrow. And do not borrow what you can manage to do without.

?But, financial prudence notwithstanding, spending is a necessity. Business managers who choose to under-spend in key areas are shooting themselves in the foot. The key is for value to exceed expenditure.? As an instance, experts say spending on marketing and advertisement, if well done, is very critical to attracting business prospects. A business that does not spend on getting the best hands, for example, will not go far. On the income side, revenue generation must be sustainable. This can be achieved by engaging in businesses to generate repeat patronage from customers. ?It can also be achieved by engaging in scalable businesses,? says Okoli. He adds, ?Scalability simply means the ability to serve a wider market with only marginal increase in costs. This is typical of service based industries like ICT and media. Overall, entrepreneurs need an above-average understanding of accounting especially cash flow, costs assessment, depreciation and taxation.?

Below are common money management errors to avoid as a small business owner, according to experts:

Checking profit only at year end

Experts say many business owners wait until the end of the year to find out whether they are making money. They note that small businesses shouldn?t be run as such. According to professionals, waiting until the end of the year is not good enough. Fixing problems at the end of the year is simply the wrong way of running a small business, adding that instead, problems need to be addressed along the way. When this is adequately followed, by the end of the year, the entrepreneur need not worry on whether the business made money, lost it or broke even. Experts say liquidity is important to maintain the day-to-day operations of a business. Your employees need to be paid, you need to pay yourself, and new stock needs to be ordered, but without liquidity it will be a tough stretch for your business.

Failing to pay yourself

As an entrepreneur you should learn to pay yourself as you run your business. According to experts, often small business owners forget to pay themselves first. They note that the first basic aspect in business is the ability to pay yourself first. You must learn to reward your efforts and should include a reasonable living wage for yourself in business and cash-flow planning. Planning ahead is essential, and if you go into a personal cash-flow crisis and need to pull cash out of the business, you?ve also created a business cash-flow crisis for yourself when you fail to pay yourself. That is why you need to plan accordingly so that you are ready at the time of crisis as you manage your venture.

Credit mismanagement

As an entrepreneur in the small business category, you need to prearrange credit through financial institutions before you need it. You have to be proactive in the management of credit in business. If your cash flow is tight and you are experiencing challenges, it will be more difficult for you to get credit from financial institutions when you need it the most. For individuals who use credit to defer cash outflow, you must ensure that you pay back before high interest rates kick in. It is also advisable not to make personal purchases with your business credit. Keep business and personal expenses separate or you will end up in serious debt.

Employing defective tracking system

Experts advise that you use special accounting software and online interactive tools that can help in cash-flow tracking and forecasting .i.e., using tools that can help you know what is likely to happen to your business in a day, month or year. You must ensure you track your accounting system regularly and by using the right software you can achieve this without must stress. This will help boost your productivity and give your business the right edge.

Ignoring bills

Experts say just as much as you enjoy getting paid on time, so does owners of other businesses. It is therefore wise to pay your taxes, suppliers, utilities and other bills on time to avoid interest charges and a bad reputation in the industry. Every supplier has its terms. Some may give you 15 days, others seven, while a few may not allow you to exceed the date of agreement. You can use online programmes to keep tabs on the due dates or possibly even setup pending payments in order not to default.
