This week, Ford Motor Co. briefly pulled down a YouTube ad bashing competitors for taking federal bailout money, reportedly after receiving an unhappy call from the White House (watch the ad below). In the commercial, a Ford customer says in a mock press conference that he wanted a pickup built by a company that is "standing on their own." Ford, which publicly advocated the bailout but declined the money itself, says it removed the clip as part of a routine ad rotation ? not because of pressure. And White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer says the Obama administration didn't ask Ford to pull the ad, which the company put back up on YouTube late Tuesday. What does this flap say about Detroit ? and Washington? Here, three possible lessons:

1. It's a bad idea to let government meddle in business
"A free market doesn't stay free when government begins competing in it," says Ed Morrissey at Hot Air. Nothing illustrates that better than reports that a mere phone call from the White House could scare a powerful automaker into yanking a commercial. A government that uses its regulatory authority to favor certain companies over all others "will distort market behavior in significant and freedom-chilling ways. Knocking an ad critical of government policy off of television and the internet is simply a more visible symptom of those dangers."

2. Conservatives will distort any meaningless event to bash Obama
This is just another Fox News-inspired, right-wing attempt to fabricate a tale of "Obama administration bullying," says Media Matters for America. Ford and the White House independently and emphatically say there was no intimidation in this case, and even the columnist who sparked the dustup said that while the administration asked questions, it never asked Ford to kill the video. The truth is, this commercial has been publicly available since May, and its scheduled four-week run in Ford's ad lineup is already over.

3. Bailout bitterness lives on
This controversy is proof that the auto bailout isn't something that simply "happened and now resides in our memories," says Dan Ikenson at Forbes. "It is an ongoing tipping of the scales of competition ? intentionally and inadvertently." As long as the White House is trying "to tout the bailout as evidence of its 'successful' economic stewardship," it will continue to feed the perception, at Ford or on the street, that it "might stir up trouble" for anyone who challenges its story.

Study: Dads less likely to die of heart problems (AP)

Fatherhood may be a kick in the old testosterone, but it may also help keep a man alive. New research suggests that dads are a little less likely to die of heart-related problems than childless men are.

The study ? by the AARP, the government and several universities ? is the largest ever on male fertility and mortality, involving nearly 138,000 men. Although a study like this can't prove that fatherhood and mortality are related, there are plenty of reasons to think they might be, several heart disease experts said.

Marriage, having lots of friends and even having a dog can lower the chance of heart problems and cardiac-related deaths, previous research suggests. Similarly, kids might help take care of you or give you a reason to take better care of yourself.

Also, it takes reasonably good genes to father a child. An inability to do so might mean a genetic weakness that can spell heart trouble down the road.

"There is emerging evidence that male infertility is a window into a man's later health," said Dr. Michael Eisenberg, a Stanford University urologist and fertility specialist who led the study. "Maybe it's telling us that something else is involved in their inability to have kids."

The study was published online Monday by the journal Human Reproduction.

Last week, a study by other researchers of 600 men in the Philippines found that testosterone, the main male hormone, drops after a man becomes a dad. Men who started out with higher levels of it were more likely to become fathers, suggesting that low levels might reflect an underlying health issue that prevents reproduction, Eisenberg said.

In general, higher levels of testosterone are better, but too much or too little can cause HDL, or "good cholesterol," to fall ? a key heart disease risk factor, said Dr. Robert Eckel, past president of the American Heart Association and professor of medicine at the University of Colorado, Denver.

"This is a hot topic," Eckel said. "I like this study because I have five children," he joked, but he said many factors such as job stress affect heart risks and the decision to have children.

Researchers admit they couldn't measure factors like stress, but they said they did their best to account for the ones they could. They started with more than 500,000 AARP members age 50 and over who filled out periodic surveys starting in the 1990s for a long-running research project sponsored by the National Cancer Institute.

For this study, researchers excluded men who had never been married so they could focus on those most likely to have the intent and opportunity to father a child. Men with cancer or heart disease also were excluded to compare just men who were healthy when the study began.

Of the remaining 137,903 men, 92 percent were fathers and half had three or more children. After an average of 10 years of follow-up, about 10 percent had died. Researchers calculated death rates according to the number of children, and adjusted for differences in smoking, weight, age, household income and other factors.

They saw no difference in death rates between childless men and fathers. However, dads were 17 percent less likely to have died of cardiovascular causes than childless men were.

Now for all the caveats.

Researchers don't know how many men were childless by choice and not because of a fertility problem.

They don't know what fertility problems the men's partners may have had that could have left them childless.

They didn't have cholesterol or blood pressure information on the men ? key heart risk factors.

Less than 5 percent of participants were blacks or other minorities, so the results may not apply to them.

All those questions aside, however, some prominent heart experts were reassured by the study's large size and the steps researchers took to adjust for heart disease risk factors.

"I think there's something there," and social science supports the idea that children can lower heart risks, said Dr. Eric Topol, a cardiologist and genetics expert at Scripps Health in La Jolla, Calif. "Whether it's with a pet, a spouse or social interaction ... all those things are associated with better outcomes."

Dr. Daniel Rader, director of preventive cardiology at the University of Pennsylvania, said: "It's biologically plausible that there's a connection," but the reduced risk attributed to having children "is pretty modest."

Men often ask him what they can do to keep from dying of a heart attack, he said.

"I'm not really prepared to, on the basis of this, tell them to start having a few kids," Rader said.

The Punk Movement: 10 Years of British Punk Chronicled By Zines (PHOTOS)

Before there were blogs, zines were the greatest mode of self-published expression. If we're being loose with our interpretation, the origins of zines can wind all the way back to Thomas Paine's "Common Sense," but they first really gained momentum in the 1930s within the science fiction genre. One of the largest subcultures to put its mark on zines came years later, in the 1970s as part of the punk movement. Zines were a way for punks to circulate their thoughts, frustrations and of course, show flyers, in a forum that wasn't available in the mainstream media.

100 of these vintage zines have now been compiled into one volume, titled "100 Fanzines/10 Years of British Punk: 1976-1985," which will be on display and discussed by a panel of experts at the NY Art Book Fair starting on Sept. 30. Lawyer: Phone hacking legal action to begin in US - seattlepi.com

LONDON (AP) ? A former tabloid editor who was once the British prime minister's media aide is suing News International over its refusal to pay his legal fees, his lawyers said Friday.

Andy Coulson's law firm DLA Piper said in a statement that it has begun proceedings against Rupert Murdoch's News International for reneging on an agreement to pay legal costs. Coulson is among those who have been arrested in the phone hacking scandal.

Coulson, a former News of the World editor who later went on to serve as Prime Minister David Cameron's top media aide, resigned as the phone hacking scandal began to boil over earlier this year. News International has not commented on whether it was paying Coulson's fees, and declined to comment Friday.

News International has also refused to confirm in the past whether or not it is paying legal fees for Coulson.

The development comes as Lawyers from the U.S. and Britain said Friday they are looking to see if American courts can take up a case against Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., the parent company of News International.

If a case is filed, it would broaden the scope of a scandal that has shaken the media mogul's empire and potentially expose it to greater financial penalties.

British attorney Mark Lewis revealed few details but suggested the legal action could begin by taking depositions from News Corp. officials and focus on alleged "corrupt practices." He said he had retained U.S. lawyer Norman Siegel, who represents families of many Sept. 11 victims, to take on News Corp.

But while Lewis predicted the first hearing could occur within two or three months, Siegel downplayed the prospect of immediate action, telling The Associated Press that he'd only been asked "to explore whether there's legal options."

Lewis "asked us to do the research. That's what we're doing," Siegel said.

News Corp. declined comment. Its stock price dipped slightly in early morning trading but bounced back up to about $15.80 a share in New York.

The media conglomerate is best known in the U.S. for its properties such as Fox News Channel, The New York Post and The Wall Street Journal. But it's been under pressure in Britain since July over revelations that its flagship Sunday tabloid, the News of the World, routinely hacked into people's phones in its quest for scoops.

The now-defunct paper is accused of systematically intercepting private voice mail of Britons in the public eye, including, notoriously, a teenage murder victim whose family Lewis now represents.

The New York-based company has already been forced to abandon its bid for full control of satellite broadcaster BSkyB Ltd. amid the scandal, and faces a multimillion pound legal bill to settle victims' claims. That bill could climb if cases were brought in U.S. venues, where penalties and settlements are far more generous.

But one law professor said such a maneuver "seems like a stretch."

Typically lawyers file a class-action lawsuit first and then solicit depositions afterward, said Chris Fairman, a law professor at Ohio State University. While the rules of American civil procedure don't prohibit the reversal, such a move is highly unusual, he said, describing Lewis' proposed actions as "a fishing expedition."

Although it's been alleged ? in a thinly sourced story carried by a rival U.K. tabloid ? that the News of the World sought to target the phones of Sept. 11 victims, Lewis said that wasn't the focus of his U.S. legal thrust.

No evidence has surfaced to back up the Sept. 11 claim, and News Corp. has dismissed it as "anonymous speculation."

Nevertheless, U.S. prosecutors are investigating the claim, and recently sent a letter to the company requesting information on any payments made by its employees to British government workers, a person familiar with the case said.

The person spoke anonymously because the information was not meant to be disclosed publicly.

Hurricane Hilary moving away from Mexico's coast (AP)

MIAMI ? Hurricane Hilary is moving away from Mexico's southwestern coast in the Pacific but is a powerful Category 4 storm.

Hilary's maximum sustained winds early Friday are near 145 mph (235 kph).

The hurricane is not forecast to make landfall, but the U.S. National Hurricane Center says Mexico's coast is being affected by wind, rain and heavy surf from Hilary.

The hurricane is centered about 120 miles (190 kilometers) south of Zihuatanejo, Mexico, and is moving west near 10 mph (16 kph).

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Mexico's coast from west of Acapulco to Punta San Telmo. A tropical storm watch is in effect for west of Punta San Telmo to Manzanillo.

Meanwhile in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Ophelia has weakened with winds near 45 mph (75 kph).

Over the past few years pre-employment background checks have gained significance for employers big and small. Companies can either execute the required activities in-house or can outsource them to human resource companies that specialize in carrying out background checks.

There is a lot of paper-work, co-coordination, and follow-up that goes into conducting a background check and for this reasons companies prefer to get the job done by an outside agency. The background checks have to be done in accordance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). According to the FCRA, an individual who earns less than $ 75,000 per annum cannot be reported for criminal acts that are more than seven years old. Also, the checks can only be done with the signed consent of a job seeker.

Companies that wish to execute background checks should do so as a matter of policy and should make this known to job seekers. This acts as a deterrent for applicants who intend to hide information. if an external agency is hired to do the check then one should check if the agency is conversant with FCRA requirements, relevant state and federal laws, and the equal employment opportunity laws. The sources from which the company obtains its information should be verifiable. Normally, the information is acquired from consumer reporting agencies that report on education, credit history, and criminal records.

A standard employee background check verifies driving and credit records, employment background, Social Security Number, education, and military background. The check can also include drug tests and checking on references provided. The nature of the background check varies with job requirements, for example drivers are normally subjected to a stricter reference check and their motor-vehicle records are looked at more closely. Similarly, the credit records of accountants and those who may be required to manage a company?s finances are scrutinized more than the records of others.

When availing the services of an outside agency, factors such as the extent of the check, nature of information desired, contact points at both ends, and person assuring the accuracy of information provided should be decided beforehand. The contract between an employer and a third party Human Resource company should address privacy and discrimination laws, timeframe for submitting information, indemnities, insurance against errors and omissions, and evidence of professional liability.

Employers should compare the data obtained from various sources during the process of a background check. Information in a job applicant?s resume should be checked with facts stated in the job application. There should be no inconsistencies in the information provided in the cover letter and facts offered during the interview. Common things that are cross-checked include the Social Security number, education, and the date of birth.

Scientists can now include online gaming in their problem-solving arsenal. Because game players seem to have provided an answer to a scientific question that?s vexed researchers for a decade.

Scientists wanted to know the structure of a protein-cutting enzyme produced by a retrovirus similar to HIV. They haven?t been able to solve the protein structure using standard computational methods.

Now, the game?researchers developed Foldit in 2008. Teams of players fold molecules and rotate amino acids to create 3-D protein structures. Gamers get points for structure stability.

So researchers asked gamers to try to solve this particular protein. Within three weeks, the gamers found a good solution. The scientists then refined it and were able to completely determine the protein?s structure. Having the structure could inform the use of drugs to block the enzyme, and provide another tool against retroviruses, including HIV.

The researchers say that people have better spatial reasoning skills than computers?and that using both humans and machines might be a way to overcome various structural challenges. The results appear in the journal Nature Structural and Molecular Biology. After recent prime time debates on such famous talk shows as the Tyra Banks show, the spark has been ignighted about whether or not it?s still un-cool to be a Pro-Pot Parent. The real question, isn?t whether it?s okay to use cannabis and raise kids. It?s really about whether or not it?s now okay to be open and honest about it. Is mainstream America ready?

Cannabis culture has grown exponentially in the last ten years, starting out in the prohibition era, moving into the time of the peace loving hippies, and now it has matured into the era of the Stilletto Stoners. A time when it?s not just the under culture and tree huggers who utilize the healing and calming power of vitaflora. Every where from high powered lawyers, to manufacturing workers, and all over in between, is seeing a large growth in the amount of people who will proudly admit that they use cannabis, and they are proud of it.

?I toke and I vote!? has been the latest slogan.

Now another slogan is filling the ears of the country, and it?s ?I?m a Pro-Pot Parent and Not Afraid to Declare it!?

So what?s the big deal anyways? What?s wrong with using cannabis and raising kids? Let?s go over the Pro?s and Con?s.

PROS:

~Calmer more patient parents

~More adventure and quality playtime for the kids, with parents who are actually interested in the same activities their children are. Such as: Playing at parks, enjoying family games, playing make believe and learning through activities.

~Most Pro-Pot Parents are very observant of taking any other self medicating substances, such as prescriptions, tylenol or alcohol

~Because of the controversial topics that surround cannabis and kids, most pro-pro parents are very educated about what they are doing, what ways they are doing it and how others view their lifestyle choices

~Pro-Pot Parents are more likely to speak to their kids about both harmful and non-harmful substances that they might encounter in the world, leaving their children with an educated view point. Pro cannabis parents are more often more honest about the substances of the world.

~Children of parents whom talk to them about drugs, are more likely to try cannabis and less likely to try other drugs

~Parents who only use cannabis live longer than parents who regularly consume alcohol, pharmaceuticals, over the counter medications or who live extremely stressful lives

~Parents whom use cannabis to relieve stress are less prone to physical or verbal abuse

~Big pharma would lose money from parents who are aware of the evil side effects that come with prescription and over the counter drugs and substances.

~Big Alcohol would lose money from cannabis consuming parents choosing a safer alternative

~More cannabis consuming parents are aware of the faults in compulsory education and are taking a hands on approach to make sure their children are prepared for the world.

CONS:

~A minority of parents might abuse cannabis and neglect their children

~Government run compulsory school might fall apart for the rise of the home schoolers and unschoolers (like that?s a bad thing)

~Sometimes accidents do happen, and when cannabis edibles are left in irresponsible places, kids can consume them. Though this would not cause them to be in any physical danger, it might have some small psychological consequences if parents are not prepared to appropriately handle the situation

~Smoking cannabis is not a great option for pro-pot parents, anymore than smoking cigarrettes. Edibles should be used when no private kid-free areas are available.

~Some parents whom consume excessive alcohol, might use cannabis as the excuse for inappropriate behaviors and actions, in an attempt to hide their abundant alcohol usage; giving cannabis a bad name.

With all these pro?s, and not that many con?s. it?s no wonder so many people are saying, ?what?s the problem??

Though there are still many parents who are still under the political-religious illusion that cannabis is harmful and that parenting and cannabis don?t mix. While they hold steadfast that there is nothing wrong with drinking and parenting, or self medicating with over the counter drugs or prescriptions. It seems? That the really big deal, is simply in the refusal of some, to be accepting and understanding of a culture that is different from theirs. In the same ways that some are afraid of homosexual communities, other religious communities or sub-cultures. Are we now seeing the time of the Cannaphobes? Those whom have no fact or logic for protecting their beliefs that cannabis is bad, but will still fight tooth and nail to claim that those who choose to use are in the wrong?

We will see. As the cannabis culture comes out from every corner, in medicine, in recreation, in the work force, in luxury, in design. Cannabis will not slowly die away, and neither will it?s dedicated culture. It?s time for change, and now is the time.

I love children and I love being with them, talking to them and teaching them. Asian stocks dented by pessimism over Europe (AP)

BANGKOK ? Asian stocks floundered Tuesday as investors digested a credit downgrade slapped on Italy and awaited the outcome of a two-day Federal Reserve meeting that many hope will announce measures to boost U.S. growth.

Oil prices hovered below $86 a barrel while the dollar strengthened against the euro but slipped against the yen.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 1.4 percent to 8,739.74 as export shares sagged amid a persistently strong yen that weighs on company profits.

Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dropped 1 percent to 4,042.90. Benchmarks in Taiwan, Indonesia and the Philippines also fell.

But Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.1 percent to 18,938.48 and South Korea's Kospi was 0.1 percent higher at 1,823.63. Indexes in mainland China, India, Singapore and Thailand also gained.

Investors are reluctant to engage in big moves as talks dragged on between international lending officials and Greece, which is teetering on the brink of bankruptcy.

"Today you don't have the panic selling you had yesterday, but still there is no buying. So we are in for a long bear market. I don't think the market is ready to rebound yet," said Francis Lun, managing director of Lyncean Holdings Ltd. in Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, Standard & Poor's downgrade of Italy's credit rating Monday added to "the pain and fear across eurozone markets," Credit Agricole CIB said in a research note. Italy's rating was cut by one notch due to weakening economic growth prospects and higher-than-expected levels of government debt, S&P said.

"Risk aversion remains highly elevated, with little prospect of a drop any time soon as Italy's downgrade adds to Europe's woes," Credit Agricole said.

In Tokyo trade, Honda Motor Corp. dropped 2.3 percent and electronics giant Sony Corp. fell 4.2 percent. Fujitsu Ltd., which provides technology services for mobile devices and servers, tumbled 4.2 percent.

Japanese Finance Minister Jun Azumi told reporters Tuesday that the recent sharp rise of the yen has slowed the pace of the country's economic recovery from the March earthquake and tsunami. Tokyo has not ruled out intervening in the currency market to stem the yen's rise against the U.S. dollar and other major currencies.

Investors are looking to the U.S. Federal Reserve in search of positive news. Many economists expect the Fed, which starts a two-day policy meeting later Tuesday, to announce something to jolt the sputtering U.S. economy.

Last month, the Fed took the step of endorsing a plan to keep short-term interest rates near zero through mid-2013.

Some economists expect the Fed to eventually try for the third time to stimulate growth through a program to buy Treasurys to lower long-term interest rates. That's a step known as "quantitative easing."

But hopes of Fed action did not mollify intensifying worries over Greece. Investors fear the nearly bankrupt country won't be able to convince lenders that it can pay its debts ? and that it won't get the money it needs to avoid a default.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 0.9 percent at 11,401.01 on Monday. The drop ended five days of gains for stocks and marked the return of the back-and-forth trading that has accompanied the uncertainty about Europe's debt crisis.

The Nasdaq composite fell 0.4 percent to 2,612.83. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 1 percent to 1,204.09.

Benchmark oil for October delivery was down 3 cents at $85.67 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude dropped $2.26 to settle at $85.70 on Monday.

In London, Brent crude for November delivery was up 18 cents at $109.32 on the ICE Futures exchange.

In currencies, the dollar rose slightly to 76.53 yen from 76.50 yen in late trading Monday in New York. The euro fell to $1.3616 from $1.3671.
