The weddings happen fast and the invitations go out the day before and the ceremony involves the boy offering the girl money that is framed and presented to her and her family. Everyone signs the papers and then you go to a party where you sitting on a plastic chair in front of the whole village while you eat satay, rice and chillies with your fingers and listen to awful indonesian music dangdut, where ?sexy dancers? girls who are about 19 wearing mini skirts (with full black tights underneath) and low cut shirts (with a full length black t-shirt underneath) sing for the boys who offer her money (50c ? $2) to shake her hips? they think this is sexy dancing, they get very excited about it ? For most conditions, I believe the clips are plenty strong and are generally better because of how quickly they allow the tent to be set up and dismantled.

Free Standing and Staked Designs

Free standing tents seem to have become the norm. Their primary advantage is that they can be set up without being staked into the ground. Stakes are still important to keep the tent from blowing around, but the stakes usually do not need to be driven far into the ground. Staked tents tend to be a bit lighter than free standing tents, but need to be staked solidly into the ground to hold their shape. Staked tents can be difficult to set up or keep up if the soil is hard or rocky. I?ve become a convert from staked tents to freestanding tents after bending multiple tent pegs beyond repair trying to pitch the tent on hard rocky ground.

Single Wall and Double Wall Construction

Double wall tents are tents that require a separate rain fly to keep out water. Although they are slightly heavier than their single walled counterparts and take a bit longer to set up, they are generally less expensive, warmer, and hold up better in wet conditions. While the lower weight specifications and small packing size of the single wall tents make them attractive, the double wall tents are generally a better deal economically.

Three Season and Four Season Specifications

Three season tents are just that; tents designed for Spring, Summer, and Fall camping. Few people go backpacking in the winter compared to the other three seasons, so the vast majority of tents sold are three season tents. Four season tents are built from heavier materials in order to hold up against the winter weather and are bulkier and harder to carry. Some manufacturers offer a 3+ season tent if you are camping early in the Spring or late in the Fall; but unless you are planning specifically to camp in the winter months a three season tent is more than sufficient without undue bulk and weight.

Vestibules

If you don?t have room to keep your shoes in the tent with you, vestibules are a great place to keep them dry and yet outside the main tent. Some vestibules provide enough of an overhang to allow the screen or even the door to be open during the rain. I personally enjoy feeling the breeze from a storm while I am dry inside the tent. Most people probably would not consider the vestibule worth the weight, but they are a nice luxury.

Conclusions

While different individuals will select different tents based on various factors, understanding the fundamentals differences between tents can help you pick the tent design that fits your hiking style and conditions.

Scotland's For Me: Scotland Food and Drink Chocolate Award

The Highland Chocolatier was announced as the recipient of VisitScotland?s Food Tourism Award at last night's Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards in Dunblane. Based in Grandtully in Perthshire, The Highland Chocolatier is a chocolate maker with a dedicated chocolate exhibition. ?Food and drink is integral to the experience of visitors to Scotland and these awards have been a wonderful opportunity to build on Scotland?s Year of Food & Drink and our EatScotland quality assurance scheme by highlighting some of Scotland?s food heroes. Scotland?s Year of Food and Drink runs up to the end of May 2011 and VisitScotland sponsors the Food Tourism award in recognition of the importance that food and drink plays in supporting tourism. Figures show that ?1 in every ?5 spent by a visitor in Scotland is on food and drink-related activity, equating to more than ?500 million for UK visitors alone. In March a survey (HPI Brand Tracker survey) showed that, between October and December 2010, there was a 6.5 per cent surge in the number of people who agreed that ?Scotland is a country of great food and drink experiences?.

To enter the award, businesses needed to be a quality Scottish food or drink business with authenticity, quality and passion at the centre of their product, as well as emphasising their visitor?s experience. In selecting the three short-listed finalists, the judges were delighted to see the range of food and drink visitor experiences across the length and breadth of Scotland and were impressed with the level of sophistication and excellence in food and drink provision and visitor experience, particularly across rural Scotland.

Earlier this month, The Highland Chocolatier swept the board at the Academy of Chocolate Awards in London with its Velvet Truffles awarded an exceptional two Gold, two Silver and one Bronze for Best Truffle and Best Filled Chocolate categories. The winning recipes included the pure Mild and Dark varieties of the Velvet Truffle, and infusions with Assam Tea & Green Cardamom, Crushed Raspberries & Black Pepper, and White Lime & Chilli.

MPAA Moves to Shut Down Online Streaming Service Zediva

The Motion Picture Association of America asked a federal judge on Thursday to grant a preliminary injunction to stop Zediva, an online movie rental outlet, from operating.

Zediva is the latest in a long line of upstarts to look at how Hollywood does business with release windows and bifurcated rights and think there must be a simpler way.

In Zediva's case, the company saw that on one hand, brick-and-mortar DVD rental stores are allowed to rent its users the latest DVD releases, and on the other hand, online streaming services like Netflix can't because of a perceived need to get permission from Hollywood studios.

So Zediva cut through the red tape by splitting the middle: The company believes it operates a DVD rental store. The only difference here is that its customers rent both DVDs and DVD players and remotely control each over the Internet. By doing it this way, Zediva claims that it doesn't need Hollywood approval. The studios, unsurprisingly, are challenging that assessment.?

Is Zediva exhibiting films to the public or merely giving individuals a more convenient way to enjoy rented films privately?

The question of "public" vs. "private" may seem trivial semantics, but it's likely to make the difference in the outcome of the dispute.

"It defies common sense to say, as the Studios do, that putting a longer cable between a DVD player and its single viewer transforms a private performance into a public performance," said Zediva in its answer and counterclaim on May 16th.

The MPAA see things differently.

"Defendants omit the fact that what they call a 'very long cable' is in fact a?transmission?over the Internet, and not the handing over of a copy to a user," says the MPAA in its motion?filed Thursday asking for an injunction. "The transmission is what makes Defendants? conduct a public performance under the?statutory definition."

If a court sees what Zediva is doing as a private performance, it's possible that it will come down similar to the way that courts did when Cablevision announced it was going to let subscribers store TV programs on its remote servers. The entertainment industry objected, but the Second Circuit Court of Appeals denied its attempts to kill the service, ruling it was a private performance.

The studios are confident, though, that courts will see what Zediva is doing as public exhibition. One of the cases it points to is an old one where a brick-and-mortar shop?transmitted movies from videotapes to customers in private 4?x6? exhibition booths in the rear of the store. The Third Circuit?deemed this to be a public performance, not a private one, and found it illegal.

Both the MPAA and Zediva are bringing top intellectual property lawyers to the fight. On the MPAA's side are attorneys from Munger Tolles & Olson, who helped to destroy Limewire. On Zediva's side are attorneys from Durie Tangri, who have represented Google and Comcast, as well as?Mark Lemley, one of the most influential IP scholars around. Both the technology and entertainment industries are watching this battle closely.

Barnes & Noble Tells a Simpler Story With New Nook E-Reader

Bookseller Barnes & Noble has rolled out yet another version of its Nook e-reader. The new Nook emphasizes simplicity and affordability with a compact design, a single physical button and an e-ink touchscreen interface. It's a departure from Barnes & Noble's previous Nook, the Nook Color, which can be coupled with the Android mobile OS to create an almost tablet-like device.

Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS) has introduced its new Nook -- a more elementary, less expensive black and white WiFi e-reader device geared toward a simpler market and hoping to compete in the growing e-reader field.

The new Nook unrolls with some key differences from its predecessors and competitors. Primarily, it features a touchscreen and offers a battery life of up to two months.

The device uses e-Ink, the same as the Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) Kindle, to offer a book-like level of contrast and what some say is a more eye-friendly reading experience than a tablet or computer screen.

E-Reader Competition

The release comes days after Liberty Media offered more than US$1 billion for a 70 percent stake in Barnes & Noble. With print bookstores suffering across the country, the bid to own such a large percentage of a major player in a sluggish industry is likely directly related to developing a competitive e-reader.

Amazon currently leads the e-reader market with its Kindle. The new Nook has the potential to become a true competitor, especially with its lower cost; however, many new e-reader devices are similar product-wise, and often it's the content that keeps customers coming back to a certain brand.

"The market is being less and less driven by the physical device and has more and more to do with the content. Consumers are relying on previous positive experiences with brands and bookseller content to predict how they're going to move forward," Jeff Orr, senior practice director of mobile devices at ABI Research, told TechNewsWorld.

Keep It Simple

As the new device launched, Barnes & Noble CEO William Lynch touted the e-reader's simplicity.

The company bills the devices as the most intuitive, easy-to-use e-reader -- likely an attempt to market a new round of e-reader users, one that is less tech-savvy and engaged as the first round of buyers.

The market may now be ready for that type of simpler device for a crowd that isn't willing to invest in a complex personal device.

"There is a group of people who are using traditional computing technologies today, and then those who say, 'This is too complex for me, I need a simple solution.' That audience is looking for a device that does one thing and does an excellent job at that, and the e-reader does that by being a replication of the book-reading experience and removing the complexity of that," said Orr.

Keeping in line with the simpler approach, the new Nook has just one button -- 37 fewer, Barnes & Noble's Lynch bragged, than the third-generation Kindle.

It also doesn't offer access to an application store like the Kindle or the Nook Color.

That's good news for book sales, says Ross Young, senior vice president of displays, LEDs and lighting at IMS Research.

"We also think that's good for Barnes & Noble's business as buyers of this device are likely to download more books than buyers of the Nook Color, which has many tablet features and distracts buyers from reading," Young told TechNewsWorld.

The new Nook sells for $139, exactly the same as Amazon's Kindle 6-inch WiFi version. It's already available for pre-order but won't begin shipping until June 10. It will also be available in Barnes & Noble retail stores as well as Best Buy (NYSE: BBY), Staples (Nasdaq: SPLS) and Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) stores.

Barnes & Noble declined TechNewsWorld's request for further comment. Amazon did not respond to requests for comment by press time.

Tonight?s final showdown between country teens Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery will add a little extra pressure from two of the biggest stars in country music: Season 4 American Idol champion Carrie Underwood and the legendary George Strait.

According to published reports, Underwood and Strait have both selected songs that the two teens will sing this evening. The selection of Underwood and Strait are due to both teens having songs selected by their own favorite Idols. Additionally, the two will perform personal selections from Season 10.

Taking their name from their home city of Baton Rouge, La., natives The Red Stick Ramblers are heard here in a performance from 2007.

Led by the twin fiddle attack of Kevin Wimmer and Linzay Young, along with Chas Justus on guitar and bassist Eric Frey, The Red Stick Ramblers meld the musical traditions of cajun, swing, gypsy jazz and southern honky-tonk. In 2006, the band joined Linda Ronstadt and Ann Savoy for her release Adieu False Heart, which earned a Grammy nomination.

The Rambler's Mountain Stage appearance was in support of their album Made in the Shade, which was produced by Dirk Powell. Their most recent release, My Suitcase is Always Packed, features contributions by Mountain Stage regular Tim O'Brien. This set opens with an ode to one of the delicacies enjoyed by residents of Appalachia and the Gulf regions alike.

Alerting parents to children's speech and hearing problems ...

Although more than 5 million children in the United States have a speech, language, or hearing disorder, parents are often uninformed and unsure about what to do if they suspect their child may be affected.

Speech and language problems can occur at any time in a child?s life. They can be caused by injury, illness or heredity.

Childhood speech and language problems include:

? Stuttering.

? Articulation difficulties, such as saying ?wabbit? instead of ?rabbit.?

? Language disorders, such as the slow development of vocabulary and grammar.

? Voice disorders, including a nasal, breathy, or hoarse voice or speech that is pitched too high or too low.

Hearing loss, like speech and language problems, can have a negative impact on a child?s social and academic development. Hearing loss in children can occur at birth or as a child grows older due to chronic ear infections or exposure to noise. The earlier hearing loss occurs in a child?s life, the more serious the effects on the child?s development.

Typical signs of a hearing loss in children include:

? Inconsistent response to sound.

? Delayed language and speech development.

? Unclear speech.

? The use of high volume settings on radio, TV, CD players and other devices.

? Problems following directions.

? Failure to respond when called.

? Misunderstood conversations and frequent requests for repetition.

Parents who suspect their child has a speech, language or hearing disorder should seek the care of a specialist. ?Speech and language pathologists and audiologists work in schools, private practices, hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, health departments, research laboratories and other health and education settings.

Fortunately, most children with communication disorders can be helped. Even if the problem cannot be eliminated, children can learn targeted strategies to help them cope with their communication disorders or provide them with the appropriate adaptive devices.

Children at risk for hearing loss, such as those who suffer from chronic ear infections or in cases where there is a family history of hearing loss, should be screened by a certified audiologist as frequently as needed to ensure they are hearing well. Otherwise, for children ages 5-18, hearing screenings should occur on initial entry into school and annually in kindergarten through 3rd grade as well as in the 7th and 11th grades.

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association provides parents with information about communication disorders to help ensure that these disorders do not seriously affect their children?s ability to learn, socialize with others, and succeed in school.
